Arillas gets its first formal car park!!! and it couldn’t come at a more timely moment. For years this small Corfu resort has balanced a romantic vision of a peaceful, largely promenade with the practical reality of rising numbers of rental vehicles. The new paid parking area responds to that reality while aiming to preserve what makes Arillas special.
A changing tourist landscape
I remember Arillas in the 1970s. Back then, "day zero" of our tourism, the only sounds you heard were the cicadas, the waves, and perhaps the occasional braying of a donkey. There were no rental cars because there were barely any roads, and certainly no tourists to drive them. We lived in a quiet corner of Corfu that felt like a well-kept secret. If you wanted to get here, you took a long, winding journey by bus or a dusty taxi ride, and once you arrived, you stayed. You spent your days on the sand, your evenings at the taverna, and your feet were your primary mode of transport. Most holidaymakers were content to stay local.
