Clean Monday (KATHARI DEFTERA) is the beginning of the great Lent before the Greek Easter.
Because Clean Monday is also traditionaly considered to mark the first day of spring, we tend to celebrate it with picnics or going out at a local taverna. These activites are called 'koulouma'.
Traditional foods include olives, octopus, and shrimp. In addition to picnics, outdoor activities used to celebrate the day include flying kites, dancing, music, etc.
There were not only kites flying but also a paramotor and a dellta-plane. !
Kostas on the beach was open for lunch . The place was full until the late hours of the evening.
The temperature hit the 20°C and that made it much easier for us to celebrate another local custom on the sandy beach of Arillas.
Some people were swimming in the sea! The water temperautre is not different to the temperatures of April and May ( 17°C to 19 °C.
This year the beach conditions as well as the good weather has made it to be the best day of the year 2017 so far... there are more to follow !! Stay tuned.
