The Arillas Bench
« on: June 18, 2020, 11:50:31 PM »
Hello,
I'm writing some sort of story for a local magazine (again).
When was the bench on the pier placed?

I'm trying to find this information on old posts but there are too many results with the word bench....

Hello Dimitris
The old benches were still on pier during the summer of 2008 but were lost during the storms of the winter.
The wooden bench was placed on the pier at the start of the 2012....
Trust me I have the photographs :-)  :-) :-)

I think Terry was quite involved with the bench set up. -
I am fairly sure it started as donations to honour and remember the loss of a well liked Arillas local.
Twas a while ago and I reckon Terry will furnish us all with the facts.

Hi Egg, Yep it was when Kostas died. Kev has just got back to me to say it took about a month to collect the money, also a plaque was ordered but not used because of  family wishes. Then the money was sent to you and you and Dimi which between you and Dimi got ordered the bench on line which came from Athen's. The first year it went up it was a bit wobbly, but excess money paid for stainless steel bolts and some varnish.A good job done every year since then to make sure its stable again, in time for us all.

Kevin started the collection and I think there may have been approx. 20 of us that actually donated I know exactly the amount I donated it was £20 I sent it to Kev lol
From memory after the old benches were washed away and after there was no sign of them being replaced someone but I don't know who and it might have been Terry suggested that we the lovers of Arillas collect and donate the bench to the village , there was some debate if I recall and yes there was the discussion about it being put there in memory of the then owner of Kosta on the Beach, there was also debate on a plaque some wanted one in memory of I think Kosta but this was not the families wish , so the bench was purchased and there was enough money left over for its maintenance for a year or so.

You are pretty dam close to events , Ang.
Twas indeed Kosta , from Beach Kostas, who was a good pal to us all and still greatly missed. It still remains my honour and pleasure to enjoy his "legacy" if you like, and spend time with Irini and Vasilis plus their two lovely little girls.
(Kostas pic still on the wall and quite often catches my eye and brings back super times)
Cheers

I first went to Arillas in 2007 and Kostas on the Beach, with the stories of Stroobie) quickly became a favourite taverna, so it was a pleasure to be able to contribute to the bench fundraiser on Arillas.com. Always have a lovely warm feeling sitting on that bench knowing that it bought because people thought so highly of someone from their favourite holiday place; what a tribute & testimony that is.

Let me add more to the story of the bench.

The wodden bench that was installed in 2012 following the donations from forum members, was unfortunatly destroyed during the storms over Christmas 2014.
Dimitris negotiated and worked with the council resulting inthe bench being replaced for the summer of 2015.

ARILLAS NEEDS IT'S BENCH.
ITS PART OF THE VILLAGE

Dimitris
I must apologise,
Unfortunatly I have got the date of the installation of the original wooden bench wrong.
Having researched further into the bench I can now confirm that the bench was installed in June 2011
The picture below is the FIRST PICTURE OF THE BENCH POSTED ON THE FORUM BY DIMITRIS
ON JUNE 5th 2011
Hope this information is of use

Hi
Not in Arillas thank god not saying I do 🤫

Swimmers face £645 fine for peeing in the sea

Beachgoers in Spain who answer the call of nature while having a swim could be handed a fine of hundreds of pounds after a local council introduced a ban. The city of Vigo, in the northwestern region of Galicia, wants to end the practice of urinating in the sea by imposing a €750 (£645) penalty. Local authorities have passed legislation that bans “physiological evacuation on the beach or in the sea”, but The Times said that details of how exactly the rule will be enforced are unknown
