This year on holiday I re-read one of Gerry Durell's novels from the Corfu trilogy. What an absolute joy and I defy anyone not to laugh out loud at parts. Wwhat a wonderful story teller he was. I have been slowly making my way through his other books and have just read 'the picnic'. Please please try and get this from your library or download. Hilarious!! Was a great thrill visiting his Corfu home in Kalami this year.

Thanks, Jo, for the reminder. Shall do!
Have read them, but just realized that it was SO LONG AGO...
And at that time I had never even been to Corfu.

Reading Durrell`s books are on my to do list.  Will have a look at Amazon and order them.   Early Xmas present to myself.
We, also, enjoyed visiting Kalami and seeing The White House.

Hi Jo. Totally agree. The Trilogy is fab. Read The Picnic and suchlike Pandemonium when I first visited corfu in 1988 and had visited The White House.  Have re-read the books a few times since and they always make me laugh out loud! One of my favourite bits is when they are on the ferry,  travelling to corfu for a family reunion- laurence asks the barman for an ouzo n water. He spits kit out exclaiming, "you bloody fool! It's hot water! " To which the bemused waiter replies,"Of course. We have no cold..." very funny!

Jo many thanks for recommending the Corfu Trilogy last year I have just finished it on kindle £2.99 very funny my sort of humour how wonderful and idyllic it must have been.
Our friendly Arillas is the closest we can get to that lifestyle in this millennium. His other books are now on the agenda.

Jo & Nicky,

The trilogy sounds better than the story of Lawrence & Nancy's bohemian marriage "Amateurs in Eden" by her daughter Joanna Hodgkin. I've been trying to finish this for about a year (keep having to start again as I'm always forgetting what's happened so far).

I blame my eyesight or the fact that my arms aren't long enough anymore...
(I've never read a book Nicky... - lol)

Jez, I have exact same experience with that book. Bloody awful.
