May Day walk along the Arillas trail

May Day has been historically important as part of the international labour movementís battle for the introduction of an 8-hour working day. Balancing work with relaxation and participating in community life continues to be just as relevant today as the pressure to work long hours increases despite, or perhaps because of, so many technological advances.

The beautiful town of Arillas in Corfu marked May Day this year with the opening of a spectacular 8km trail that winds its way from the beach, along the river and up into the olive groves and fields of wild flowers. New friends were made as walkers of different ages and nationalities climbed into the hills, stopped to look out over the islands and calm sea and spotted wild orchids and gladioli. They then sat down together to share food contributed by people from the town and enjoy the local Corfu beer and music.

It is perhaps no great surprise that the local doctor has played such a key role in clearing and opening the new trail, recognising that spending time enjoying the natural environment, being active and talking with family and friends is essential to health and happiness. It was thanks to him and local restauranteur Dimitris, owner of the Brouklas, and the generosity of local people that visitors can now enjoy more of Corfu's exquisite scenery. The many hours they spent clearing the path and organising signage is not to be underestimated.

Eating spinach pies and souvlaki, listening to music with a glass of excellent cold beer and putting the world to rights after a beautiful walk Ė it doesnít get much better than that.

Lovely post Justine and Mandy. Thanks for sharing it with us. I for one, hope that many, many visitors take to the trail. So many aspects of the area can be seen an sampled on the route. It makes an ideal intoduction to many aspects of Arillas.

Hi Ginger

Trail well signposted, just follow the red arrows up from the beach by the river. There are two places where you have to cross a ditch or stream on a fairly narrow path and going up into the hills can be steep in places but it was very straightforward and no one seemed to have any difficulty with the walk. It is stunningly beautiful. Hope you all enjoy as much as we did.

The Arillas Trail looks a superb walk - but it ain`t short.  I`d give it a go and try and complete it but not sure how far Heather will get.  The hilly parts are the problem.
No matter, we`ll do what we can and enjoy it.
As people have said, lots of hard work has taken place for us to enjoy another aspect of Arillas and surrounding area. Thanks for that!!

This will be the first walk we will do next week, although love the walk up to Afionas and St George it will be good to try something different.  This walk may replace our walk to Sidari lol.

Well we did the trail ........... all of it.
Couldn't quite determine the track by Inas so went round and started just past Villa Mon Amour.  Took us along the stream and actually had my photo taken holding one of the wild turtles there, think I may have traumatised it ha ha.  Went up the stream and came out at Galini Apartments, went up the road behind these apartments and instead of going up the steap road to the church went to the right and followed the red arrows.  It is a very secluded walk so make sure you have the right footwear and plenty water.  Took up right up into the hills, magnificent views of Arillas from a different angle.  Eventually came out at the Magalades/Kavadades sign post, instead of taking the easy option and returning by the main road we followed the arrows again and cut through the olive groves.  Saw some lovely houses/villas on the way, one looked like it was constructed out of wood with a slate roof (gorgeous) walked for ever and came out opposite Rainbow.  In all took us just over 2 hours mind that was in mid day sun and without a drink ha ha we thought it was going to be a little walk.  Got some lovely photos of the flowers, wild life and houses but can't remember how to upload them onto the forum.
A walk that you must try if able

Doesn't look too enamoured.... but at his age I feel sure there would be no difference for me! Please keep me sane by posting something on here or FaceTube now and then Eileen meluvver. I think the descent into depression has begun.... 3 months is a long time!!!
