I was born in Arillas in 1973, and my world has always been the stretch of sand meeting the Ionian Sea, watched over by ancient olive groves and cypress-trees. But my real understanding of this place comes from a lifetime spent in my father's taverna. Growing up in my father's local taverna, the wooden chairs and checkered tablecloths were my playground, my classroom, and eventually, my workplace. From my days as a teenager running plates of moussaka to my life here today, I have watched the world pass through our doors. From sweeping floors as a boy to sharing a coffee with guests today, I have spent a lifetime observing the unique parade of people who find their way to our corner of northwest Corfu.
Arillas is more than a destination; it is a living community,Over the decades, I've come to know them not just as guests, but as distinct characters in the ongoing story of our village. Here are the seven types of travelers you're likely to meet here.

1. The Legacy Keeper families (our extended family)
These are the families who have been returning for 25, 30, or even 40 years. I've watched their children grow up and now return with children of their own. To us, they are extended family. They embody the deep, loyal love for Arillas that transforms a holiday destination into a second home. They are the living history of our community. They remember my father behind the grill and now share stories with me about their lives back home. Their loyalty is the bedrock of Arillas. They bring their friends, who in turn become regulars, creating a beautiful, self-perpetuating circle of love for this place. For them, Arillas is a constant in a changing world, a touchstone of peace, familiarity, and simple joy.
2. The Seeker & Settler
Drawn decades ago by the serene energy, many followers of spiritual paths like Osho found a sanctuary here. Now pensioners, they have often settled permanently, their quiet, mindful presence adding a layer of tangible peace to the village atmosphere. Their legacy attracts modern alternative therapists and healers who come for long-term stays, seeking a life in balance with nature.
3. The Modern Voyager (The Digital Nomad)
The new-era traveller arrives with a laptop and a dream. They trade office walls for a balcony view of the sea, staying for months to work remotely among our inspiring calm. They integrate into the local rhythm, becoming part of the fabric of our daily life, proving that Arillas is not just an escape, but a viable place to live and create.
4. The Connoisseur
This traveller comes for a feast of the senses. They are the food-loving locals from Corfu Town, arriving for a legendary long lunch, or the discerning tourist from another resort, lured by tales of our authentic tavernas and breathtaking sunsets. They appreciate the quality of our gastronomy, the unspoiled beaches, and the genuine Corfiot philoxenia (hospitality).
5. The Explorer
Equipped with hiking boots and a spirit of adventure, this traveller is here for the Arillas Trail. They spend their days discovering hidden paths through olive groves, breathing in the scent of wild herbs, and being rewarded with cliff-top vistas of the coastline. They remind us all of the raw, natural beauty that surrounds our village.
6. The First-Timer
You can see the wonder in their eyes. Everything is new: the first step onto the beach, the first dip in the Ionian, the first sunset that seems painted just for them. They are full of discovery, and we often sense that they are future Legacy Keepers, just beginning their own love affair with Arillas.
They arrive as strangers, but often, I can tell, they will leave as future friends. Many are the children or friends of our legacy guests, the next generation ready to start their own tradition.
7. The Honeymooners
And then there is the most hopeful of all: the couple on their honeymoon. There's a particular, beautiful glow about them. They are here to start their married life with a perfect memory. They seek romance in our sunsets, intimacy in quiet beach walks, and a promise of simplicity and beauty for their future. We often think that perhaps, one day, they will return as Legacy Keepers, celebrating an anniversary where they once celebrated their beginning.

From my table in the taverna, I see this wonderful mosaic come together every day. The retired teacher sharing a wine with the digital nomad, the explorer swapping trail tips with the local connoisseur, and a family with children of all ages playing freely with local kids on the beach, their laughter mixing with the sound of the waves. This is the true magic of Arillas: it doesn't cater to just one type of person; it welcomes them all, offering a unique sense of belonging to each. We look forward to seeing which type of the seven travellers you are, or perhaps, you'll be the one to show us an eighth.

Happy May-day everyone.

Lovely Post Dimitris. I first came to Arillas in 2006 and while there booked for 2007, staying at Helios Court Villa and fell in love with the place. Brouklis became my favourite place to eat, you were so welcoming and helpful, arranging us a lift back up to the villa from one of your staff as a storm was on the way and you knew it was quite a walk back up. For one reason or another I didn't return until last year. When my wife and I were discussing where we should go I asked her what she wanted in a destination and she described Arillas, without ever having been there. Our holiday was everything we hoped in would be. You remembered myself and again made us feel so welcome and your food is still the best in Arillas. We are returning again towards the end of July and we cannot wait. Arillas is a special place, everyone so lovely and make you feel at home everytime, we will be returning for many years to come, god willing.

P.G.

Thank you, Dimitri, for this post.
Reading it, I could not help but smile. Because, in the end, these words simply confirm, with a disarming naturalness, the character of Dimitri "The Sponge" in my novel The Strength of Fragile Days.
The Sponge.
The one who observes.
The one who absorbs.
The one who, without ever imposing himself, manages to capture every subtle nuance of the world flowing beside him.
Your story contains exactly this. A careful, quiet gaze, capable of turning the simple passage of people into something alive, authentic, and deeply human.
This is not just a description of Arillas.
It is something more.
It is a tribute to true hospitality, the kind that does not need to be declared because it can be felt.
It is an invitation to be together, even in our differences.
It shows that places like yours do not bring people together because they are the same, but precisely because they are different.
And perhaps this is the most beautiful part.
That human mosaic you describe, made of travelers, returns, discoveries, and new beginnings, is exactly what makes a place feel alive. And you tell it in a way that only someone who has spent a lifetime observing can.
It could not be otherwise.
It could only be told by you.
Great Sponge.
If I had to summarize all of this in a single word, short but powerful, I would choose the one that quietly runs through every line you wrote.
Welcome.

Our first time in Arillas was May the start of a new season 2007 staying at the kokkinos we arrived at Corfu airport about 1630 got the coach all excited to be taken to our destination the coach was full going to little villages dropping holiday makers off we saw glimpses of the sea looking good.
Then disaster struck the driver got lost he couldn't find the next drop offs
Going through my head WHAT THE f#£& HAVE WE DONE by now it was dark going past taverns people eating still driving around bright lights flashing people walking around
Now the time is 2100 just leaving Sidari we was hungry pi££#@ off anyway West Ham was on sky that night I thought I would find a bar have something to eat and a few beers BUT NO
We had no rep on the coach driver shouts out our apartments name we got off the coach got our bags and trying to ask the driver where to eat and the night life was a big NONO
A lady came out to show us our room we asked her where we can eat she pointed down that way it was black we would have got lost
But the coach stopped at the Tria so we walked back towards the bright lights of the Tria now the time is 2245 missed fist half got some drinks in asked the man behind the bar can we get some food sorry your to late I can not remember if West Ham won or not 😂
But the next day was the first and not the last time in Arillas

And thank you Dimitris making us all welcome

I would describe us as the legacy keeper families. At least I hope so. We first came to Arillas in 2001 and our kids were 11 and 8. We fell in love with it immediately.  We were fascinated by Dimitris' portable card machine. The first time we had ever seen one. We returned in 2004 and then did not return for a few years going instead to Italy and Croatia. It was our son who inspired us to return in 2013 when he asked me about it as he had fond memories of it as a child. He went there with his girlfriend and another couple. Since then we have returned again every year. I think this year will be our 17th time. Im sure that will not be the record. Our kids now are grown up age 35 and 32 and often return with us. Just love it. Roll on 6 weeks today.
