Hi everyone, we're coming to arillas for the first time on the 25th May and are hoping to spend quite alot of time snorkeling in and around the area. I was just trying to find out if the sea temp is warm enough at this time of year and which beaches would people say have the warmest waters.
Many thanks Aidan

I would say definitely a wet suit!!  We always come in July/Aug and that Sea ALWAYS takes my breath away!! Last year we came late Aug and it was warmest I have ever known it but even so, I still had to utter a swear word on that first dunk!

The sea warms throughout the season. In October it is like getting in the bath. I don't do cold - I even find the pools too cold to get into. But have been in the sea a lot in October over the last few years. In July it seems to vary from day to day, the winds decide - it is either chilly or lovely and warm. In May I'm afraid I would get wet inside at the Coconut Bar. Jo is wise -take the wetsuit.

Oh dear :-(, but thanks Jo and Phil, atleast if we don't have to pack all the snorkeling gear we'll have more room for clothes in our luggage and if by some miracle the sea warms up we could always buy our equipment when we get there..........and snorkel in a hotel pool !

I usually come to arillas in late may and snorkel at each end of the beach where there are plenty of rocks below the surface. The water temp is fine for me for half an hour or so, then I get out to have a quick warm and get back in again. The snorkelling at porto timoni and limni is only a few minutes ago and is better.

I am happy to say we were snorkelling yesterday by the jetty and the sea was quite warm. It really does depend on the weather conditions ... a few sunny days and the water feels quite pleasant. We have had a little rain here this morning (just to keep the dust down!) but it's brightening up now.

I can aclimatise easily once I am in the sea. Some people can do this whereas others just get chilled like my hubby Barry. I love outdoor swimming and swim in Hanmer mere in the summertime ... a bit of weed doesn't bother me and the damsel flies are lovely on the surface of the water.

I agree with Phil October can be the best time. Anyone tell me why sometimes you can feel a warm wave and the next will be colder??  No it's nothing to do with having a wee in the sea !! Answers on a postcard please :-)

Cheers Nan x

Thanks Nic and John and Nan, glad there's a glimmer of hope after all. Like you say Nic,rocks are important to snorkel around in order to spot some local fishies so we'll look up porto timoni and limni beaches and give them a try. Never been to Corfu before so its all new to me but i've got a very good map and some good guide books.

Oh and no Nan, i'm not sure why there are warm patches and cool patches but lets just hope theres more of the warm ones eh!!

I observed last August that when the water is turquoise it is cold but when it is light blue it is lovely and warm. I am sure there is a perfectly scientific explanation to how and why the currents make a difference in the temperature.

Or it could just be me in a slight beer haze 8)
