Me too Mary. I have often looked as I passed the Night owl on my walks to Aionas but have normally eaten at Dionasses or 2 Brothers. Maybe this May!

Ditto, ditto, Mary and Martin!  I've been saying the same thing myself about visiting the Night Owl, we normally just walk past it.

We've only visited Dionyssis though, so looks like we must also try the 2 Brothers......

Night Owl has to be worth a try y'all. - Great place and a great family.
Linda may have a new starter this year - S'all I'm saying but it's something I've never had in all my years. Now I wonder why?
So worth a visit, if only for a stop off drink and to just view the Darts shield which will proudly be on display by 20th May
See Darts Post.

Another one to give a little trade would be Heracles (Iracklis) May have said this before.
It's on the way out of Arillas but an ideal "halfway house" for you walkers to relax.
And see some of the larger murals that Jean Walsh created for them.
And..... you'll be made very welcome.
And..... They may have a dartboard in the Winter ( But they don't know that yet )

Cheers

Thanks for the advice, Neill, I shall definitely be trying the Heracles as well as the Night Owl and the 2 Brothers.

Hmm, think our walks to Afionas may take all day from now on!!  ;)
In fact, whether we will be able to make it to San George as well seems in doubt........
Ah well, we have a fortnight........

Hi all. Apologies already for waxing lyrical...

When we were young, Jen and me walked everywhere. Our biggest was 27 miles in one day. A day off from work saw us walking to the edges of the Hoo peninsula, stopping at the 13th century church in Cliffe, eating in the only pub for 20 miles, wallowing in the glorious bleak countryside, and sharing the experience with anyone and everyone we met.

Sounds familiar eh? Arillas and all the gorgeous surrounding places offer all that and more. Perhaps it is all of that which makes us such addicts. If we'd been there twenty years ago we would have been reporting on every nook and cranny, every hill and every dale, every taverna, every village. And we would have walked to them all.

But at our age, life is different. I will drive but only under sufferance. I have said that elsewhere on the forum. And then I would never be able to share a drink with friends. Jen can only walk a little distance - Brouklis to the beach is about her limit in one go. The hill to Afionas is beyond her now. And we can't afford to pay for taxis everywhere.
Many friends would drive us there, and we always accept that graciously. But you don't build a life round that. We see the inside of a bar. But we truly see the world in our own way.

justphil and justjen are Arillas Ready Human Beings....

So we make our life here in Somerset (and in Arillas which is much more important to us - it is where we belong) by reading the forum, going on facebook, sitting in Rainbow, Brouklis, Mirage,  Annas, Thalassa and all the others..... yes the in bar. There are so many things to do, but when you can't, you can still join in. In your own way.

Enjoyed your posting, Phil.  You seem to wax lyrical whatever you say - its just your way of putting it that seems to convey not only clear descriptions, but also feelings.
I think that what comes over to me is the need to enjoy life to its limits.  If you can walk, you should walk, and if you can't you should take whatever other opportunities are presented to you.
Last year in Arillas Julia and I set off with great hopes of long walks on our first day, but the pollen from millions of olive trees in the middle of May, proved too much for Julia.  Her asthma overtook her and we spend several happy hours over several days at the surgery where Dr Popadopoulos did his very best to sort her out.  He did a fine job, but long walks were out that holiday.  The nice thing about the Doctor's surgery is that its just a stone's throw from Brouklis, so we were able to keep an eye on Dimitris, while queuing for the doctor.
Keep seeing the world in your own way.
Best wishes
Pat

Loved these postings, especially the ones by Phil and Patrickjohn. I agree totally.
When we first visited Arillas we used to do lots of walks, since my husband (everytime I count my blessings I count him twice!] has been unwell, walks have been out of the equation. He can manage from the Mathraki to Alex's to buy Telegraph, sit at Horizon and do crossword, couple of hours on beach, then he goes back to our room for a sleep, whilst I remain in the sun. Walks now comprise of my toddle to the bakery for breakfast breads and baklava for afternoon tea and I take an hours walk before my darling wakes up. We spend a lot more time in tavernas than we did when we first visited, and thats fine we are on holiday, and I rarely have time just to sit when at home..this is what I work so hard for. We have done the driving bit and viewed entire island in past years, but it is Arillas that I daydream about and think about before going to sleep...it is not just the beauty of the place, you can find that in lots of places..but the warmth and friendliness of the people. xxx

Lovely postings justphil, patrickjohn and Georgia.
We haven't done that much walking from Arillas in the past but will this year I'm sure. Times is 'ard so will probably only hire a car for one or two days when we're there, other half gets bored on the beach every day so a bit of walking is on the agenda.
Not long now.
Cheers all.
