Worst Landing at Corfu

Heard of things that go bump in the night but that looked similar to our landing back at Leeds Bradford, i thought the plane wasn't gonna stop at the end of the runway
We landed comimg in from the south at the north end of the runway is a cemetry i thought we might be joining the deceased in there lol

I just watched your video Terry - & yes, it was quite a bump wasn't it?
It was funny when the stewardess mentioned the temperature outside & everyone went 'woooo' - that made me smile.

I heard, that to fly into Corfu the pilot has to have certain specialist qualifications as the runway is so short.
Am I correct in thinking this?

No.

The runway is much longer than many in the UK.

The short runway in Corfu is a myth.

Ooh Terry,
I know Corfu landings are "hairy", I loved your video because it made me experience the effect with my eyes open, taking off and landing are my two scariest things flying related, so I shut my eyes and put my fingers in my ears till we are nicely taxiing along the runway! Last week, the lady in front of me did the same thing on take off and landing; her husband thought it was hilarious, because we both did it in sync!

I have only landed at Corfu Airport twice (alas), but I filmed the second one and you can really see how hard the plane "hits" the runway.

Ive never seen that side of the runway when landing Ive always been sat on the other side of the plane lol, it does look like a nasty landing, great video though

I also heard that the pilots have to be specially qualified to land in Corfu, not because of the short runway, but just because its difficult - I was told that on my 1st flight to Corfu when we were about to land, I almost 'pooed' myself

It's not only Corfu that gets bad landings (although, personally, I haven't experienced any there).  We have just returned from five days in France, flying Ryanair to Carcassonne.  The landing there was very hard and rocky, but returning to East Midlands today was absolutely dreadful.  The stewardess made a comment straight after the landing "Ladies & Gentlemen, you will have noticed that we have landed at EMA, and we are all still alive"!!  I couldn't believe that the tyres hadn't burst!

Hi All,
The worst trip I ever had was a return from Corfu to Gatwick. We came in like a trip on a big dipper, after 'stacking' behind a Quantas jumbo jet, and got caught in the turbulance behind it. We hit the deck square on, I thought the bang was excessive and everyone yelled out. We then bounced three times and almost 'cartwheeled' to the right. I saw the wing tip get very close to the ground before the left wheels hit the deck again. The pilot apologised for the 'rough landing' Havn't flown from there since.
May from Cardiff and back was perfect in both directions.

We didnt have a bad trip either way with Easy Jet but the landings seem a bit noisy... all the cabin sounds as if its falling apart with the vibrations... thats a bit scary... you have visions of yourself coming to a standstill with you in your seat and nothing around you but fresh air.  Perhaps thats EJ planes I dont know although it did seem in pretty good condition with nice leather seats etc.

was coming back from zante a few years ago into east midlands, we over the runway literally seconds from landing when the pilot suddenly gunned it and took the plane up again. took him a couple of minutes before he came over the tannoy to inform us all that we may have noticed he was unable to land that time, this was due to another plane on the runway!!

when we did get down he apologised again blaming it on a "weekend flyer"

The very first time I came to Corfu was quite a few years ago to Kavos on a 2wentys holiday and the flight we came on was a  2wentys scary flight  -just before we landed the captain anouncde hello people we are about to land on the shortest runway in Europe -brace yourselves - We did - and it was the most smoothest landing ever!!

It is correct that all our pilots do need a little extra training to be able to operate into Corfu, nowdays this can be as simple as observing the Captain land the aircraft there.

Since the ILS systems around Corfu were upgraded 18 months ago many of the very minor risks were eliminated. While Corfu's runway is relatively short it's the surrounding terrain that causes the extra training measures to be taken. It will always be an interesting landing and often a bumpy one but nothing your trusty 757 or A320 cannot handle.

About a year ago I was out auditing and due to severe tech delays I once saw Monarch send a widebody into Corfu, thats was fun to see, it came in over the road and never in a million years did you think it would stop, it did but right down at the turning circle at the bottom, only got in as it was half empty.
