What's the latest situation on broadband in Arillas? It seems it's now available, since a number of people clearly have it. Is it quick to get it installed (assuming that you have the fixed OTE phone line in place) -- what's members' experience? Which local providers are members using? Any news would be welcome.

Mrs Egg

Dear Selima - when we arrived in NW Corfu in May last year we were told that there was no capacity to install more internet connections in this area and that we would have to put out names on a waiting list.  However, amazingly, following the payment of a small fee (!) we found ourselves at the top of that list and had our ADSL connection installed a couple of weeks later.  This was with OTE whose main office for the area is at Skripero.  Having said that NOTHING is quick here and overall it probably took about 4-6 weeks to get our phone line and internet connections sorted plus numerous trips to Skripero.  On the positive side there is an extremely good help desk with very knowledgeable staff who speak very good English so, once we had the kit in place, they were very good at sorting out the initial teething problems.

Hope this helps although of course this was last year.  I'm afraid I don't know the current situation although someone else I have been in touch with has been investigating mobile broadband access which he thinks should be available in Corfu with one of the three major mobile phone operators in the area - but I don't have any more information about this at the moment.  Sorry!

You (or at least Mr Egg) know my husband and I under our real names. Thank you for your encouraging details about fixed line broadband in the area, which Mr Egg has already indicated to us privately. I am just trawling for anything additional up-to-date and of interest on this topic around Arillas (where we shall be looking at a rental house in near future).

My husband has recently uploaded the results of his detailed research into mobile broadband for laptops in Corfu into a topic running on the www.agni.gr forum -- go to message boards, Corfu general questions, internet access and look at last posts. Here is also a direct link to the first page of the topic:

Basically, mobile internet access should be available in the Arillas area on the 2G (GPRS system) networks of two and probably three of the local mobile phone cos. This is not 3G high speed broadband mobile access, which is essentiallyavailable only in Corfu Town and nearby at present, and which delivers something close to the speeds of fixed line broadband. However, it may be adequate for basic internet needs for those who do not have a fixed line and cannot get fixed broadband installed. See the referenced posting for all the complex details!

Thanks Selima for the advice. Maybe technical but understood.

Jen and me need a good bar with good food; a broadband internet connection and sattelite tv. Perhaps a comfortable bed for the night but we've been known to do the beach.... Maybe not any more. And the love of good people in Arillas.

We will never settle there without all of them

best wishes
