A bit of Greek History

K FOR   KALYPTRA

The Greek word for veil is kalyptra (καλύπτρα), which comes from the verb kalyptō (καλύπτω), meaning "I cover". In ancient Greece, many women wore veils, and they could have many different meanings:
Patriarchal control: Veils could be a way to exercise patriarchal control.

Sensual: Veils could be a sensual turn on.

Practical: Veils could be a practical choice in hot climates.

Expression: Veils could be used to express something to the world, such as at weddings, acts of piety, or expressions of grief.

Reveal or hide: A Greek woman could choose to reveal or hide her hair to express something.

In classical Greek and Hellenistic statues, Greek women are sometimes depicted with their face and head covered by a veil.
The plural of kalyptra is kalyptrai, but the term has been latinized and the plural is often given as kalyptrae.
