A total of 22 beaches throughout Greece lost the "Blue Flag", the Greek chapter of the global institution announced on Thursday, July 25, 2024.

According to the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, the "Blue Flags"  may have been removed from 22 beaches but the quality of the swimming waters remains excellent as by the standards of the Programme.

A total of 625 beaches in Greece were awarded the Blue Flag in May 2024. (full list here on KTG)

In July, the Blue Flag has been removed from 22 beaches either for they did not organize this year's swimming season or did not meet the criteria of the Environmental Education, Information and Awareness Program.

According to the Program's procedure, assessors of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature and international assessors who made unannounced visits, found deficiencies in the enforced observance of the criteria that specifically related to: provision of services to bathers and visitors (including the disabled ones), cleanliness, correct information, safety of bathers and visitors, correct environmental management as well as overlapping of free coastal space.

The deadline for posting the Blue Flag was July 1st.

As expected, the members of the National Crisis Committee and the Program Coordinating Committee decided to withdraw the awards in order to preserve the prestige and credibility of the institution.

At the same time, inspection visits continue to all of the country's award-winning coasts, visits which, for the most part, are carried out unannounced. If deficiencies in the observance of the criteria are found on other coasts, other withdrawals will follow and will be announced with subsequent Press Releases.

The Committee stressed that the withdrawals to the coasts in question are due to poor organization and that the quality of the swimming waters remains excellent.
