Hermans Book
« on: April 28, 2012, 12:14:29 AM »
I have just read this book on Ipad. It is really good with some fantastic photos, but the last page is a bit special ..... see below.

If you have never been to this part of Corfu before please read the last page below  because it is so true.

http://www.corfudirect.eu/Gorfu_Guide/A%20Free%20Visitor's%20Guide%20to%20NW%20Corfu%20Guide.pdf

Thank-you for downloading this, the first of what I hope will be several
e-guides. In putting this together my hope was to innovate a new style
of holiday guide that provides more than just the tertiary information to
encourage visitors to book a holiday, but something that will enable
tourists to get a little more ‘under the skin’ of the places they are
visiting, by including more about how the society works.

If you have any comments you would like to let me have, especially on
subjects not covered in this guide that you may like me to research and
include in the next edition, please feel free to email me and let me know what
sort of things you would like included. I will do my best to ensure they are
covered in the next edition. This guide will be updated regularly and I would
especially like to get your opinions if you visit any of the resorts covered. Tell
me about the good bits and the bad bits, plus anything in between. In this
way the guide can build into a truly valuable resource for travelers to the
region and help to enhance everyone’s experience.

By now you will have gathered that Northwest Corfu has a special place in
my heart, and this is not just because I like the location. It is mainly because
the people in this part of the world are special. Corfiots will always go out of
their way to make your stay on the island memorable, and pride themselves
on their hospitality and genuine warmth. Despite all you may be hearing
about Greece in the news, please remember that this is a snapshot of reality
and has very little in common with the real character of Greeks, who in my
opinion, are the best hosts in the world. The fact that they are going through
a lot of turmoil at present should emphasize how much support we need to
give them to help get their economy back on track, and the tourist industry is
the most important business in Greece. The best way you can help Greece is
to ignore all the panic and fear generated by the media, book a holiday to
this fantastic country and lend them your direct support in rebuilding their
economy. Some of the things I have written about the way Greece is run
have been very critical, and I believe deservedly so, however the underlying
potential of this country is what we need to concentrate on, and helping
them to rebuild their economy through tourism is the most practical and
permanent way we can assist them in this.

A new generation of young Greeks are growing up to replace the old and
often corrupt regimes of the past, which are a throwback to the days of
communism and fascism, and helping a new generation of Greeks by giving
them the opportunity to change their country is the most valuable support
we can provide. The alternative is to watch a fellow European family member
suffer needlessly for a decade or more, and waste all the potential of a whole
generation. The best way you can do this is by choosing Greece as a holiday
destination, and in this way you will be assisting the Greeks to help
themselves. The austerity measures being imposed are shortsighted and
doomed to failure, since it punishes ordinary Greeks for the crimes of the
few. It is impossible to ‘starve a nation into prosperity’ and until the European
institutions, the banks and the European Union recognise this, they do
nothing more than punish the honest majority for the failings of the few.

So, in conclusion, I hope you will agree that there is a lot we can do by our
individual choices to help build a better Europe with Greece as a prosperous
part of it, and I hope you choose to do your bit by visiting Corfu, or anywhere
else in Greece this year. I can guarantee that if you do, you too will discover
the proud nation of warm and friendly people I have come to know and love
over the past thirty-five years. [Herman Mittelholzer - autho

Thanks for posting the link Terry, think that this is the most comprehensive tourist guide to NW Corfu to date.
As always Herman tells it as it is, I found his guide to moving to Corfu enlightening. Also his road trip home should open everyones eyes.......quite a fright.
Would have liked a lot more about Arillas, but then I am biased toward my second home!
Everybody visiting Greece should read the passages Terry has pointed out. Then read the guide.

Thanks yet again Terry. You keep me hanging on with all the links, but this one must be one of the best you have posted.

Herman's book is beautifully written, and typical of him. Never met him but know him already. Still reading it at 00:47 according to my PC. Will finish it tomorrow.

I hope it gets a much wider audience than us lot. Quite correctly in General Information - the more who read this the better.
