On the skin cancer subject.....I was talking to a lady last night who was diagnosed with melanoma on her foot - underneath! It's worth noting that if you sunbathe by lying flat the soles of your feet are exposed and how many of us even think about applying suncream there??  Luckily, she's now OK, but it could quite easily have gone the other way

georgia

Hello all,
Janis thats an interesting one. I do apply factor20 then work down to 10, but never apply to soles of feet. 3 yrs ago we needed a winter sun fix and visited the Gambia in Feb. I burnt my feet on scorching hot sand, she skin stripped off like steamed wallpaper [beautiful picture to conjure with!!] Even after that with Corfu being a much gentler sun I guess it never occured to me to apply cream to soles of feet, but after reading yr posting I will now.
Incidentally, does anybody else remember that awful fad way back in the 70's for slathering your body in Bergasol oil and laying on a sheet of tinfoil to accelarate the sunrays? I used to climb out of my bedroom window and bask on the garage roof, by rights I should have skin like a rodeo riders saddle. x

Hmm - never mind the donuts, the thought of the donut man displaying his "frash froot" on the nudee beach turns my stomach!

Hi Janis and Georgia!
Since my diagnosis and op, I have regular checkups every 4 months. They always check the soles of my feet and my scalp as possible areas of risk. Obviously you cant apply sun factor 20 to your scalp, but they suggest wearing a hat in strong sunshine. As I said in my posting, the melanoma on my back was a complete surprise to me and I had very little in the way of symptoms, I am just glad I had it checked out when I did otherwise the outcome could have been very different.
Yammas,
Martin.

Martin, I always put suncream on my scalp these days. A few years ago, half way through my holiday, I thought I had a bad case of dandruff until I realised my parting was peeling....it was bright red!! Since then I have always put it on my head......don't do hats. Had the same issue with my ears a few years ago so they are always covered in suncream now.

Thanks for the advice martin and sandy. I have a bit of a problem with hats - the sight of me in nowt but a hat is even too much for me, let alone others! And I have never thought to put the factor 15 in my hair. As a result I often overdo the sun on my head.

Will take more care in future.

Like Martin I've had malignant Melanoma about 10 years ago. I had some moles on my face that had got bigger. So I went to the doctors to ask if they could be removed I didn't even think they would be cancerous, it was only for vanity I wanted them removing, so within days I was in hospital having 6 moles removed and had 18 stitches. Thankfully it was in the early stages and have had no symtoms since. I blame it on sunbeds as I used to use on then, now I avoid them like the plague, I think they are worse than the real sun which I love, but I always where factor 30 to 50. Anyway the old leather handbag look is not a good one.But I'd never thought of the soles of the feet getting burnt. I too don't do hats but what I do wear is a wide head band.
Happy safe sunbathing
Mary

maddy

Maddy calling,
been to the nudist/naturist beach on two occasions.  People have been going for years and meet up to talk and have a laugh.  No clothes, you don't notice the wibbly wobbly bits, it's meeting up with people like youself.  Be brave it's good fun. We're going 27th July, see you there.
