Nudity is no big deal here in Finland, land of the sauna and a thousand lakes. But even up here in the north, we have had to accept that the sun should not be worshipped as uninhibitedly as we used to. So, before you get all excited about the bottomless joys of going topless, let me be a drag and remind you of the very real dangers of skin cancer! Baring areas of skin that have previously never been exposed to the sun, increases the danger. Children in particular should always be protected against the sun, sun screen lotions are not enough.
Have a look at this WHO link:

The weather report promises snow for this evening, and I am longing for the Arillas sun as much as anyone! Emeralddragon

I'm glad that Emeraldgragons have raised this point.

After having had a skin cancer scare, two years ago, I am now very cautious about exposure to the sun. Before the scare, I would lay in the sun all day and get an all over tan with the odd bit of sunburn. The thought of skin cancer did cross my mind but I naievily thought that if a melanoma was detected, it could be removed and all would be well again.

When my cousin died of a brain tumor, that was a secondary cancer that had moved from a small primary cancer melanoma, I realised that it wasn't worth risking my health just to get a tan that would be gone in a couple of months.

I'm sorry to sound like a party pooper but it does happen.

I must admit that holidays don't seem the same anymore, but the upside is not having to cope with the awful soreness of sunburn. I would never want to go through the months of suffering that my cousin went through, and the distress it caused to his wife and family.

You will never see many sun tanned doctors because they know the dangers.

Hi,everyone.  As we`re on the subject of skin care and health, do any of you have any opinions on the effectiveness of high factor sun blocks. Do they `do what it says on the label`? We use them and they seem OK. We are both sensible, so thankfully we`ve never really fried- wouldn`t dream of hitting the beach without them.

Loved the add Terry,

I wonder how many people will heed the warnings this year when they're jetting off to find the sun .
I think its one of those things that people never think that it could happen to them

How strange it is ,  the sun that can make people feel so good and yet it can cause so much damage .

Unfortunately I'm fair skinned and freckly.
I burn very easily as I've found to my cost over the year's so I'm alway's pretty careful and you'd always find me under a brolly or in the shade somewhere.
A few year's ago my mate put me onto P20 which is an anti burning lotion and now I swear by it.
It's a clear runny liquid that you apply to the exposed skin 1/2 an hour before you go out in the sun.
It's not sticky, odourless and you only apply once in the morning and you're ok all day (even if you go swimming)
The everyday saying from the family before we went out in the sun was "Have you P20'd ?"
A bit expensive ( £18 a bottle last year ) but a bottle last's a full 2 week's and quite a bit left over , but well worth it as no sunburn , no hassle reapplying all the time and best of all not sticky and you don't even notice you've got it on.
Highly recommended for any fair skinned sun worshippers !
Hope I don't burn !

we tried that stuff last year barry, and it was a nightmare! it was like putty, really thick and gloopy and such hard work to apply, it did work though once we'd spent about an hour putting the blasted stuff on we were okay for the whole day. martin suffers from psoriasis  and it was much easier to apply sun stuff in a hotel room rather than on the beach as i had to try and avoid the psoriasis patches!! i bought boots own make stuff perhaps its not as good was yours just called p20??

One of the most important things to remember with sunscreen is to apply enough of it. We tend to be a bit frugal with sun screens & try to make them last, but it needs slapping on & applying regularly.

PS. I don't have shares in sunscreen companies lol!

Hi All!
Thanks for the tip Barry, I'll have to get some of that.
I am glad the 'melanoma' theme has popped up. Last autumn I was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma in the middle of my back. See my posting of November 7th. 2008. General chat- Moles.... if in doubt get it checked out!
I am fair skinned and burn easily and it was the last thing I thought would happen to me! I now have an 8 inch scar to remind me of my narrow escape, and I still have to attend the dermatology unit every four months for the next three years and every 6 months for two years after that to make sure no more appear!
I have always used 'high factor' sun block but it just goes to show, its not always effective.
I don't want to put a damper on sunbathing but having talked at length with my  dermatologist surgeon she has made the situation clear. Those with fair skin and hair are most prone to melanomas because of the lack of the pigment in the skin which acts as a natural sun block, but it's the action of U.V. on certain skin cells which causes them to 'mutate' and become cancerous and it can happen to anyone. In my previous posting I have listed the main points of 'what to look for' when examining moles that may be suspect. It is a life threatening condition, and must be detected early.
I will be back in Arillas in May. I intend to enjoy the sunshine but will not be exposing myself to the sun for long periods.
Sunbathe sensibly, don't get burned, cover up in the hottest time of the day.
Yammas,
Martin.

shhhhhhhhh!!!!! - here is a secret. There is actually a photo of a nudee beach bum on the forum somewhere. Can you find it? Lets see who can find it first!!!!!

Its a bit "cheeky"!!!!!!!

Anybody who lives in the Holmfirth area :-) can't be included in the search.  :-)

I'm impressed, even available at Cardiff Airport!

Just wondering how the donut man carries his donuts on the nudee beach ;-)

I think it isn't just naturists who are at risk from melanoma. The slight increase in coverage of clothes for others will not do anything to prevent it. Everyone needs to be careful and take precautions. I rely on minimum factor 15 all over, with 30 or 40 for places like the hairline and shoulders. And Martin's story tells us all that it can happen to you...
