I don't understand/know "αριθ  ελαστικό" as no tyre.  I thought the word for "no" was "όχι".  I cant find the word αριθ anywhere.  Where did you see it.

Eggy: do you know the word?  I like to learn Greek so further info would be helpful

I can't type the Greek but do you mean "horis"..."without". They may be sound the same?

Not a word I recognise and Dimitris may correct me here but " θ " which is the Greek θητα - ( Thita ) is never used at the end of a word - May be wrong.

οχι - ochi - is the word for no and can be used as it is at Home.

χωριζ - choris ( "ch" as in Loch - The same with ochi ) is without.

So I suppose you could say "no Tyre" or "without a tyre"

I need to workout how to say in Greek:-
"When I find Terry's hire car it will quickly be without tyres"

History lesson over - I gotta headache now !

Anyway - A good εψιλο - (epsilo ) Terry.
Anyone for a ζιτα - (zita) ?

At least I will know how to type κλεμμένος ελαστικό when my hire car has been "Egged".

What would the plural be, if ελαστικό = tyre what would tyres be?

Here is ζ for ζωγραφική = a painting at Irini's

Thanks for posting that link Gata, I didn't know that Irini had a website.

Hi Terry

hope you had a chance to look on Irini's Site.  If you did you may have seen me!!!!!

To answer your question about plural for ελαστικό.  I think by its ending its a neuter word
το ελαστικό = the tyre so therefore the plural may be τα ελαστικα - the tyres.  I may be wrong as that was from my limited knowledge of Greek language rules and once you think you understand the rules some irregularity pops in and throws your understanding into chaos - is there any other learners out there who understand what I mean!

Terry / Gata

Heavy stuff these plurals and I still get a lot wrong. It's a bit of a minefield and a lot of it gets put into memory. A little like how you identify the word "LEAD" within a sentence. "Lead is a metal" or "The dog is on a lead" - That sort of thing.

I'm sure Gata is right on the plural for tyre as most neuter nouns ending in "O" will change to an "A". As will most neuter nouns ending in " I "
Eg - to pedhi - ta pedthia ( Child / Children )

But a feminine noun as in "ee ora" (the hour ) becomes "ores" ( hours)

I've gotta nother headache now!

Cheers

My Greek seems to flow so much better after a few glasses/bottles of wines lol

Languages are strange:

What about this.  You chop down a tree and then you cut or brake up the branches.  How did we ever learn English!!!!

I can slip quite comfortably into Greek after a couple of bevvies. But, quite often. I still struggle to understand as one word can flow into another
Yiasas for example is "hello/goodbye" yia sas can be translated as " for you "

I worry sometimes I will forget a lot of English - Who saw that I put "History lesson" earlier instead of "Greek lesson"? - You were all too polite to tell me!

So - Continue the education - Who's got a "Η - η - ητα" - ita?

I am concerned that not all this banter will be enjoyed by all so c'mon Forum. If you think we should stick a Greek A-Z on another topic make your feelings felt.

ps - I feel like I'm back at school but, for me, it's enjoyable education for a change.
pps. - Also I failed my English language and literature  A-Levels ,years ago so you've all got a head start on me.

I would love to have a go but my head is still swimming with Urdu words over 6 months of lessons and  I feel like a break from languages.  Give me a few more weeks and I might be able to have a go.  I think one of the problems is learning the phonetics and not really knowing how the words really sound.  The alphabet has got to be a good start though.  The worse part is def. the grammar!

I think its amazing that you are all having a go.  Are you using a greek translator online so as to be able to copy and paste the actual greek writing too?

So with Dans Romanian, Marika with her language (is she from Finland or Sweden), and Italian etc. we should all be able to pick a few other languages too.
