Eggy is quite right. Ever since the days of Dixon of Dock Green the proper copper's greeting has been "Evenin' All" .
Mind you, I was more of a fan of PC 49, who used to be on the wireless (as we called it then). His name was Archibald Berkeley Willoughby, and when things hotted up his catchphrase was "Oh, my Sunday helmet!"
My other favourite was Dick Barton, Special Agent which got ditched when the Archers began in its place.
As a result I went over to 208 metres - the station of the stars - Radio Luxembourg - which broadcast Dan Dare - Pilot of the Future.
I love going down Memory Lane.
