Everytime I have come to Greece late, ie mid-September onwards, the Tavernas have started to close down for the Winter. Does this happen so early in Arillas?

Brian,
We have not found that in Arillas and we will be there on Sept  17th for 2 weeks looking for a great time again.

Most places in Arillas stay open until mid-October when some begin to close. The season ends at the end of October and lots of places keep going till then.

I havent been later in the season, although when we went in May our first dinner we had at Thalassa, they gave us the menu and that was not the full menu, it was just a sheet of paper, i assumed this was because it was quite early in the season.  We went back a couple of days later and then the full menu was in use.

This might be the case later in the season, the restaurants will be open but some may not do a full menu, just a scaled down one.

Night Owls,in Afionas, is open all year round. Menu disappears about October and you then choose from what's cooking. ---- And why not?
I think that from the end Sept though to mid Oct there's obviously a lot less availability from Taverna menus. ( Good Housekeeping )
But what they have will still be good.

Brouklis, Rainbow, Armourada, and Portofino stay open to the bitter end. Kostas on the beach always opens late and closes early - by about 11 October.

We are always there at the end of September beginning of October and all the Tavernas are open although like previously mentioned there isn't as much choice on the menus.

Thanks everyone for the info. I have always enjoyed going to the kitchen and pointing out what looks good to me.

Yep thats the Greek way, A very wise tervena owner once said to me "" If there is a long menu then it won't all be fresh if there is a small choice then it will all be good" dont bother with a menu anymore just ask the owner what he recommends and if there is nothing he recommends then it cant be worth having, if you see what I mean. Another thing about tavernas ! I am only 5ft 5in. Some seats , you know, the ones with wicker seats, are so short they catch even me at the back of the thigh.
I have never said it to an owner but unless the food and welcome are very very good I go elsewhere.
Well why should I be uncomfortable. Has anyone else noticed this? Or have I a super-sensitive bum?

James W

I know what you mean about the wicker seats Brian.

(IMHO) If a place has uncomfortable seating, it means they want you to turn-up, eat-up, pay-up, get-out. So they have a quick turn around and make as much money as they can.

Big mistake!!!!

We check out the seating, as well as the menu and the ambiance. When these things are good, the paying customers are happy, and show it.  :-)

Rowdy drunks in burger and chips places, may appear happy, but we give them and those places a wide berth.

Hopefully, when we arrive in early September 2007, all the tavernas will still operate a full menu?  But we're versatile  :-)

P.S. My wife is jealous of my 'Pert Bottom'   ;-)

I had a problem with the seats at the P.timoni in Afionas... we picked a nice table at the balcony and the big fella says  "do you want to change tables and be higher up to see the view"... ok...I faithfully swopped tables which was ok  until I sat down on the chairs.  Well it was worse than the airplane seats. I was totally wedged in and it was very uncomfortable I can tell you.  So, we changed back again much to the amusement of the waiter when I gestured to my hips and said "too big"  whereupon he had a right giggle on my behalf.. Very embarassing..  It was like musical chairs/tables...  The only seating I have found comfortable was at the Thalassa (Thassala?) or the Horizon around the bar.  The seating in the restaurants are very uncomfortable, then with spending hours on the sunbed and sleeping on pine beds its nice to get up and walk a bit.
If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.

I always find myself looking at what chairs they have before even looking at the menus!  I absolutely hate the white plastic chairs - unless they have got a cushion on them!! I do like to be comfortable when i am enjoying a nice glass of wine and a lovely meal!

Smiffypink

Im the same, the plastic chairs have to have a cushion!!
