Jellyfish?

I am sure there is an expert out there, but I thought weaver fish live in the shore line. What I saw were jellyfish, as for sandflies there is no way to get away from them, apparentely salt water is good to take away the sting but with jellyfish waiting, pass! keep piling on the cream,e.t.c.Ha.ha. no !ouch, ouch.

Yes, this particular weaver fish was on the shore line, they lie under the sand and when you step on their spines  pow!  dont you know it. (mind you that was in Bournemouth not Corfu) Thats why we bought some of those shoes last year, but I didnt wear them though, Mike did.

I think it was a weaver fish that bit her. It was painful and swollen but no lasting damage.

Have never seen any jellyfish but about 3 years ago a friend of our daughter was stung by some kind of fish. She had to have an injection from the local doc.

My son got stung from a weaver fish about two years ago he suffered with severe pain and what seemed like a dead leg, it made us realise how alone you can be on the beach. I was told later that vinegar would have helped relieve symptoms. In all 23 years  of coming to corfu we have never accounted anything like this, (we have seen jellyfish in gouvia )

From what i've read so far i have to agree with Eggy it sounds like the only slippery unwanted thing at Arillas is the Dounut Man!
However on a serious note my boyfriends brother did get stung by a jelly fish but that was when he was staying at Messonghi,three years ago.

Sorry to hear about your brother thumb. If I encounter Donut, esecially on far end of beach, I reiterate, I will chase him with my marakkas, shouting flesh fluit etc! Give him a run for his money.

A good remedy for jellyfish stings is wee !
No I'm not taking the p***.
The ammonia neutralises the toxin.

In addition to the unpleasant variety that turns up in the resorts of Corfu, [Latin name "Donutus Manus"]  mentioned by Eggy, there is a jellyfish that inhabits the sea around Corfu.

Corfian fishermen know it as "Pelagia noctiluca".

In Greek Pelagia means "of the sea", nocti stands for night and luca means light thus Pelagia noctiluca can be described as a marine organism with the ability to glow in the dark.
This species of jellyfish commonly known as mauve stinger, amongst many other common names.

It may, or may not sting you. But the severity varies.

Treatment of Stings
The only published proven effective first aid treatment for the skin pain of jellyfish wounds is the use of cold packs or ice. Cold is applied to the stung area for 5-15 minutes then re-applied, if necessary. It will stop the skin pain in 98% of cases.
Vinegar is only useful, but very effective, for preventing further discharge and removing adherent tentacles after cubozoan stings.

Barry has mentioned another method that has proven effective.
