Serious road safety issues affecting the road network in the area of Arillas

Immediate need for intervention at five dangerous road locations ahead of the 2026 tourist and wildfire prevention season

The Arillas Business Association of Corfu (S.E.A.K.) brings to the attention of the competent authorities serious road safety issues affecting the road network in the area of Arillas, which have emerged or significantly worsened following the extensive damage caused in November 2025.

In view of the 2026 tourist season and the upcoming wildfire prevention period, S.E.A.K. expresses the strong concern of local professionals, as the current condition of specific roads is directly related to:

  • public safety for residents, professionals, and visitors,

  • the accessibility and intervention capability of emergency response vehicles, and

  • the use of these roads as evacuation routes in cases of wildfire or other emergency incidents.

Strategic Importance of the Specific Roads

It should be highlighted that these roads constitute critical road connections leading to Afionas, as well as to Porto Timoni, which in recent years has become one of the most visited and promoted destinations on the island.

As such, these roads do not serve only local traffic but also experience significantly increased visitor circulation, especially during the summer season. The current condition of the road network at these locations substantially increases the risk of accidents and further complicates the management of emergency situations, making their timely restoration a matter of public safety and operational functionality for the area.

HIGH-RISK LOCATIONS

S.E.A.K. identifies five (5) specific locations within the road network of Arillas that require immediate assessment and intervention by the competent authorities:

Additional Safety Concerns

The above-mentioned roads:

  • are used daily by local professionals and residents,

  • are also used by visitors who are unfamiliar with the current condition of the road network, and

  • appear in widely used navigation systems (GPS) as standard and recommended routes.

As a result, there is an increased risk of residents and visitors being exposed to dangerous conditions, as navigation systems guide them toward roads with severe damage, without any warning regarding reduced passability or safety risks.

This situation, combined with the fact that these roads function as evacuation routes in emergency situations, further intensifies the concerns of local professionals and makes immediate assessment and intervention by the competent authorities imperative, particularly in view of the 2026 wildfire prevention period.
