Where are you flying from?

Post by: Val n Bill on February 19, 2014, 02:00:07 PM

Diana, the Mathraki is lovely and quiet being adults only. We have been going there twice a year for the last four or five years.
Not that we don't like children, it's just the fact that you don't get the raucous teenagers jumping in and out the pool spoiling your peaceful afternoon doze :)
Mind you it can get a bit noisy at the bar at night when everyone drifts back after an enjoyable evening in the village.

The food at the bar is first class and very reasonable, the family are great.... nothing is too much trouble, but they are not intrusive.

We love staying there. We have made many good friends over the years because the Mathraki has lots of repeat guests.

The rooms are typically Greek and spotlessly clean, I am sure you will have a wonderful time.

Looking forward to meeting you there.

I didn't realise it was adults only, we nearly strolled in last year for a beer(for the kids , we would have had ouzo !  LOL) but carried on walking in the end. My nose would have been put well out of joint if I had been refused entry , even though, in fairness , rules are rules.

Post by: ness44 on February 19, 2014, 02:38:42 PM
Diane we are flying from Stansted . We don't do much walking as it's too hot.

VAL we are bringing 2 x 16 year old girls with us. Hope you won't be too disturbed by them. They want to do more sunbathing than anything else so they shouldn't bother you too much. Me and the other half went there last year and lovedso much that we booked again. We stayed at kaloudis the year before but liked Mathraki better.
Title: Re: Mathraki
Post by: Val n Bill on February 19, 2014, 04:04:43 PM

Truth... there is no ban on children visiting, Thomsons won't allow anyone under sixteen to stay there because they say the balustrade on the stairs needs to be higher to conform to their HS rules.

In fact you often get children and their parents swimming in the pool, everyone is made welcome, just buy a drink or ice cream at the bar. It is a lovely pool and has a little pool for kids to splash about in.
Come and have a drink with Bill and I when we are there in May, we are pool people and spend most days there.

Ness.... two sixteen year girls certainly won't disturb us or anyone else, I was thinking of groups who spend all day pushing each other in and shouting or yelling, not girls who spend the day sunbathing, chatting and reading magazines. Mind you we adults can have fun in the pool too, spent many an afternoon acting daft in the Mathraki pool. The girls are welcome to join us :)

Looking forward to meeting you all, we will be there your second week.

Hi Val and Bill, sounds exactly as I had hoped, we are off to Thailand at Easter but I am more excited about Arilas!
Last 2 years we stayed at the Paleo Inn, Paleokastritsa which was lovely and was the same adult only, 18 rooms, so similar.
We are in our fifties but we met a lovely young school teacher and her boyfriend while we were there. She very recently asked where I was going and has booked too go a few days after us.
So ness44 there will be some young people there for the girls lol!
ness44 I looked at the Kaloudas as it was the same price, decided sounded a bit to young children orientated. What would u say is the major difference between the two?
Presume Kaloudas has got extra star coz it has TV's in room (wouldn't use anyway) and mini supermarket and bigger pool.
Even in August last year we did lots of walks to local villages, it never felt too hot as there was a breeze.
Really excited about this hol and looking forward to evening, after dinner time drinks in the bar.
Val and Bill be warned I will be asking lots of questions coming up to my hol!
Hubby and me are also looking forward to visiting the brewery too!

Ask away Diana, just hope you enjoy Arillas as much as we do, it's such a laid back place and everyone is so friendly, we first found it in 2002, the beach is beautiful but alters in size, sometimes narrow and the next day much wider but always plenty of room for everyone.

Lots of walking if you want it, some hills but not too steep. You can walk to most of the surrounding villages very easily. The brewery is quite close to Mathraki, just up the hill.

Diane
When we stayed at Kaloudis 3 years ago it was lovely but last year we went up there for a few hours and even though still lovely a lot lot busier than the previous year even though it was the same time of year. We decided on mathraki this year with the 2 girls as we spoke to my daughter and gave her a choice and she chose mathraki . We can always visit there for the days but we can have the best of both world's. The mathraki is so peaceful and everybody was friendly around the pool. Also we got a really good price!!!
I can't wait to get there. Is it just the two of you going?

We have been to both! Kaloudis is fine, can be a little noisey around bar and pool at night but everyone of the family really nice, and its a good little shop.

Mathraki we love and are going back again in Sept, much quieter, great food, family very friendly and helpful, NO KIDS!, only a shortish stroll uphill from there to the Brewery, great beer and views, sure you will love it!

Hi ness44 are you using the coach to be transferred to Matharaki?
We are and if so may be on same coach.
Was going to pay extra for the taxi but thomsons said it was not that much quicker.
Seen mixed comments on the transfer times. How long did it take when u went?
Title: Re: Mathraki
Post by: springs65 on May 24, 2014, 11:54:15 PM
40 minuets by taxi so don't believe Thomsons. We went with the coach a couple of years ago and it took almost 2 hours.
Book local taxi if that's what you decide, Thomson charge much more
We use Corfu taxis they change 50 euros each way.

Hi, Diana

I got a taxi last year (to Makris) it took just under 50 minutes late evening. There was still quite a bit of traffic about for that time of night. Then i went back to airport by coach about 6pm. That only took an hour & 45 mins. I don't mind coach when it's through the day because you can take in all the lovely views, in a taxi you just whiz past them! haha

Did you hijack the coach Val.....
Title: Re: Mathraki
Post by: Val n Bill on May 25, 2014, 02:08:06 PM

Lol John......quite the opposite, we were last on....to the disapproving stares from all the other passengers. I wanted to shout "no we haven't been for a smoke"

We waited over half an hour for our cases, the carousel was empty. The next flight started to come off and then after about five minutes our cases magically appeared. The rep then told us the wrong coach number so that didn't help either.

I think the driver then got us home to Arillas in quick time to avoid the lunch time traffic in Corfu town on his way back to the airport.

Take a taxi folks you won't regret it :)

I'm glad to hear your transfer was good when you eventually got going. My concern is that we'll be the first on the bus waiting ages for other planes to arrive as we're leaving Bristol at 5AM and I haven't seen any other flights as early. If we do have to wait ages I would be interested in a taxi but there's 4 of us and don't know if taxi would be able to take 4 people and 4 cases or if not how much a Mimi bus would be
Title: Re: Mathraki
Post by: Jo Wissett on May 25, 2014, 04:01:31 PM
Minibus is usually around 85/90 euro which would work out cheaper than two taxi's plus there is the chance that if they are more passengers they may knock a bit more off.
Title: Re: Mathraki
Post by: diana on May 25, 2014, 09:50:31 PM
WOW Val n Bill was the coach half empty? who did they drop off first, at what place?
If it is only hour an half, don't mind coz nice to see some of the places they stop at.
Thomsons quote 2 hours plus, but is that just a guide line, or could it be 3 hours!
I presume u used Thomsons.

Yvonne, welcome to our madhouse. You seem to have been crowded out by the buzz as season gets underway.

You must be both excited and terrified of your first time in Corfu, let alone our little part of it. Arillas is laid back, tolerant and inviting. You will not find anywhere else like it and to enjoy you must be open and say hello, yassou, to everyone. In any case they will say it to you.

Keep posting on here. We can help you have a stress free, and enjoyable first time in a place we all adore.

Diane
Last year we used Thomson transfer and we were on a minibus and it only took an hour Max.  Maybe 45 minutes. Thomson price for transer is cheaper than a taxi each way. As it's included in the price I would rather sit a little longer on a bus and have more money to spend when there. We went in the day so got to see some lovely views on the bus. We're going again July 25 this year and will use coach again. If it takes a bit longer then that doesn't bother me as I have plenty to look at.

Diana, the coach was full....two people transferred to a minibus for the steep descent to San George four or five  couples went to Kaloudis three couples to the Mathraki, the rest on to San Steph. (Fools) ;)

When we finally got on the coach at the airport every one was completely silent.....but there was no way I was leaving the airport without my suitcase ;)

The silent treatment on the coach, when we were over for the first week of the season we mounted the coach to silence, me being my usual self said "cheer up your on holiday" This was met by silence but I later came to realise why.  Four of us were destined to arrive in Arillas whilst all the other passengers were heading to Sidari .

As for the coach transfers we find that early season is a little quicker that later on, due to the amount of people arriving in corfu.
If you decide to take the coach transfer just sit back enjoy, you will soon be in Arillas, that little extra time can be used taking in the scenery and knowing that your destination is the best destination on the whole island

I heard a rumour about that coach trip of yours , Mr J the R.

It was said that, by an unfortunate coincidence, all the males, on the coach, had at some point in their football sporting career, had been given a red card from you. -- Hmmmm!

Or, maybe it could have been the thought of not going to Arillas. - I will ask "Truth".

Title: Re: Mathraki
Post by: justphil on May 28, 2014, 01:31:25 AM
Sorry Diana, real ale does not do well in Corfu's climate. The nearest you will get is our local brewery's bottled version - brewed in Arillas itself! In fact you can visit the brewery on the way to San Stefanos. It has an awesome reputation for great beer, and has been featured by Wetherspoons in the UK twice. We are all very proud of it.

Jen says the only thing she misses is her pint. But the local krasi (wine) is a big compensation. Me? I'm a Mythos hardnut.

Also do you know opening hours for brewery trips and tours as will be for sure taking a trip up there, which I hear is not too far away.
Presume most places in Arillas sell the local bottled beer.

It varies but never "sweet." Brouklis is well known for its range, all of which are delicious. But everywhere the wine is very drinkable. I think the tours of the brewery are on Saturdays, but someone will confirm that, or just search the forum for posts on that.

Yes, most if not all places serve Royal Ionian, and many offer the whole range.

Best wishes

Hi Diana

The Arillas brewery trips were on Saturday mornings last year but I can't remember the times and we walked it easily from Kaloudis in about 20 minutes.
Well worth a visit with lots of free beer to be had and only paid 1 euro each to get in. Bargain!
We also bought lots of their beers while we were their to stock our fridge up with and enjoyed them on the balcony!

You will need to take the little things like washing up liquid. They do provide tea towels.can't remember about corkscrew.  We had our own bottle opener so can't remember about that. You will need your own hair dryer but I haven't yet stayed any where in Greece that supplies one. What other stuff do you want to know? X

Fully equipped kitchen at Mathraki, variety of pots and pans plus frying pan, two ring cooker, oven, grill, two sizes of glasses, plates and dishes...cheese grater, lemon squeezer, lots of knives, spatulas, whisk and full variety of cutlery plus tea pot milk jug and sugar basin salt and pepper....bread bin, bread board ,dish drainer, tea towels, tin opener and corkscrew. Take or buy washing up liquid, buy toilet rolls, there is usually only one supplied.

BUT, we only used two mugs, a teaspoon and two glasses.....the food at the bar is so good and very reasonably priced.

The breakfasts are  to die for, with eggs from the chickens in the garden, a large menu for all times of the day.... but if there is something you fancy that's not listed you only have to ask.

Milk and water for your room, and a vast choice of soft drinks in the fridge, plus ice cream in the freezer.
The only thing missing from our room this time was an ice tray in the freezer but I always take those plastic ice bags anyway because we drink our pre-dinner ouzo with lots of ice before we go out.

Hope this comprehensive list helps all of you going to the Mathraki for the first time but......like Bill and I and lots of other couples you will soon become regulars visitors there.

If I have forgotten to mention anything you will need...you just have to ask any of the family and you will probably get it right away.

 Enjoy your holiday, Val x

Eggy...I was thinking the same thing, but the accent was wrong, he denied it anyway,  he prefers a chocolate Hobnob. Can't be bothered with foil.

John... I forgot that the studios also have a mossie plug in the rooms. If I remember anything else I will let you know.

This is super helpful. thanks guys - 4th July we arrive for our first visit. 2nd to Arillas! Sooo looking forward to it. are all the rooms good?  Any particular one we could/should request?

All the rooms are exactly the same, the top floor has better sunset views.
It's only advantage if go back to your room at sunset though. Early in the season the sun goes down about 8.30 pm but by July it's better watching it from a sea front taverna :)

Val n Bill I I can almost taste the ouzo now.
I drink zambucca and ice at home, but when in Corfu! I always pop a few of those pale blue ice bags in my case too!
First thing on shopping list, ouzo, second loo rolls!!

I reckon room 16 is the best as it has an uninterrupted side view as well.

Shhhh, we were hoping that Nic would keep that room for us 1st-8th August. Lol

Seriously though any room at the Mathraki is great.....think we have been in just about all of the the rooms over the years.

Oh Val - You have caught me with a "bizarre" humour today.
So you couldn't open it??
Was that because the poor guy was the other side putting all his shoulder pressure on the inside??
(What will Bill do with you,?)

last year I banged on the door, trying to wake up the "Boss", shed didn't answer though, why should she, was banging on the wrong door! luckily no-one was in, or they were very heavy sleepers!

Why do I always get a little confused, when in our little bit of paradise?

I wish I could blame the drink... but it usually happens during the day when as a rule "no alcohol", last year I was trying to open the  door on the wrong floor and Bill was shouting from his sunbed "wrong floor" l though he was saying "wrong door" so I tried the next one....and then the one on the other side, I thought I had the wrong keys.

All the rooms look the same, honestly......

Eggy I will deal with you in August :)

Loving it. Can just imagine you trying all those doors Val. Once did it in Ibiza after a very tall night, and ended up walking in on a couple who didn't even realise for obvious reasons. Needless to say I rushed out with a very red face. Scarred me for life....

It was in Cala Llonga Ibiza, not Arillas Corfu. I don't want to give the impression that Mathraki is like that. It isn't. It is a lovely place to stay until the Arilliacs arrive.....

Here's hoping you forgive me. Loveandhugs
Phil

So funny. fancy walking in on someone in the act LOL.  We dropped into Cala LLonga last week picking someone up for the airport. looks nice!

So..... when me and his nibs in Mathraki do I have to put a chair behnd the door when we get down to business then ROFL ;)

I must admit to a key saga myself one year in Crete and went to the reception with the key as no way could I open the door and had been trying for ages. had left Paul down at the beach and gone back for something. turns out \i was trying to open the door with his scooter key .... soooo red faced. but i am a Blonde ;)

VAl ... is there a kettle and/or Toaster in the apts please?

A kettle yes...Sorry no toaster but the grill is very good and quick. Not that we have used it for a few years, we always have breakfast in the bar, very, very good and just keep water milk and ice in the fridge.

Continued......bread basket, oven glove and pot holder....also plenty of hangers in the wardrobe but plenty is never enough for me ;) so I take a trouser hanger with me it holds six pairs of trousers three for him and three for me. If you need more hangers I am sure Nicoletta will find you some.

Well I remembered this last lot as I was dropping off to sleep last night (funny how that happens) and seeing as my inventory has been received with the good humour that was intended I though I would add them.

Happy holidays to you all, especially those of you who will be staying at the Mathraki.....and remember it's only washing up liquid and toilet rolls that you will have to supply yourself.
PS...Nearly every place in Arillas that we have self catered at has been just as well equipped.

Arillas ALWAYS delivers :) :)

Cheers Val - great news.. also re the hangers - one year we went away for three weeks and the wardrobe contained 8 hangers.... I nearly cried.... we asked and got another four which was all they had!!     ever since have taken some with me.  I like to take the clippy type hangers as you can hang loads of tops from them by the hem. saves space too!

What a great idea, I usually only use them for holding things by the waistband. Thanks for that Heather.

It grand Val . used one first time we were in a SC with few hangers. managed to get about five tops to one clippy all hung from the hem ......... also saves getting those bumps in the shoulder sometimes from hangers especially if something light a crochet or lace top!

Already got bumps in my shoulders, stopped wearing crochet or lace tops, just wear the hanger, works a treat, smooth shoulders, but the hooks a bit uncomfortable!
You looked fine last time we met at Kos Airport!

A bit more for Val's inventory:

Clothes line and pegs supplied (although I usually take a few extra)
Blanket in the wardrobe and Nicoletta will always give you another pillow if you ask.

Well stocked bookcase of paperbacks by the pool.

Enjoy x

That's great folks thank you... sometimes nice for an early door beer but in truth would prefer a bar on the front for that......or a nightcap before bed.  YAMMAS!
