Title: Holiday Reading 2011!
Post by: Jo Wissett on August 19, 2011, 03:56:20 PM
After trying but miserably FAILING to find an old topic of the same name I will resurrect a 2011 version..

I would be interested to learn of any recommended reads this year.  I am currently making my way through Gerald Durell's Corfu Trilogy and it is an absolute JOY to read! So, so funny with breathtaking desriptions of Corfu throughout the seasons.

Whilst on holiday I read 'The Summer of my Greek Taverna' (excellent) by Tom Stone and Nights of Rain and Stars by Maeve Binchy (so so). Can anyone see a pattern emerging?! I have already read the excellent books by Jon Waller and the heartbreakingly wonderful 'Life, Love and Loss in Corfu' by James Chatto.

Dear Jo, -
Recommending books is always tricky, but here goes:
There is of course that other famous Durrell, brother Lawrence , but I read his novels so long ago that I dare not recommend them. They may have aged - I certainly have!
Books describing a move to a new country, the joys and tribulations of settling in and adapting to a new way of life, became very popular after Peter Mayle published his books about Provence, starting with A Year in Provence, if I remember correctly.
But the genre has always existed, for instance the similar, much earlier series of four books by Lady Fortescue. The first, Perfume from Provence, illustrated with small drawings by E.H. Shepard of Winnie-the-Pooh fame, was first published in 1935, and the sequel, Sunset House, in 1937. Her autobiography, There's Rosemary, There's Rue from 1939, was followed by Trampled Lilies in 1941, a book about the war. These books were reprinted in pocket by Black Swan in 1992, with later reprints. Slightly quaint, but clever and interesting. Not about Corfu, though...
I probably should recommend one or another of the oh so popular Scandinavian crime novels, but I find them far too violent for a relaxing holiday. Instead I'd like to mention the Moomin books by (Ms) Tove Jansson from Finland. (Not the cartoons, although they are good, too.) If you thought they were only for children, think again, and read them with grown-up eyes!
I always find that a few pocket books by old personal favourite authors is the safest bet.

Jo I did the Gerald Durrell Trilogy earlier in the summer and whilst I had read them in my teenage years I had forgotten on how an easy and enjoyable read they are with many an aloud chuckle or laugh whilst reading and have since bought 5 more of his books for hubby all of which he too has read....

you should read his brother Lawrence's account of his time in Corfu - "Prospero's Cell" completely different account of their time there but with some similarities.

I'm disappointed with myself this summer that I have not read as much as I would normally, something which I must try to correct, but sadly my most prolific reading moments are when the sun shines and I am sat in the garden....and we have not had much of that or if we have I have been working or writing my own little adventures on here, which come to think of it are probably another reason why I have not read as much lol.

I have done the 2 Jon Waller and enjoyed, the first was better in my opinion.

The genre of the books I read can vary - however I do tend to prefer the complex mystery, crime, style of writers and then on the flip side I can pick up a book from a complete stranger to me and enjoy - the last one a few month ago which I got from my local post office - donations to cancer charity was one by Susan Howatch  - The Dark Shore - bit of a romantic side entangled with intrigue etc first published 1973 I think I had that copy - but a lovely little paperback minute script needed glaases.

Emeralddragons I have read some of the Sandanavian novelists, they are very violent in thier descriptions but some good writting, I just cant seem to get in to Jo Nessbit with the same ease of reading though the story lines is v good

Hi

For books about Greece I read 'Eleni' and 'A Place For Us' by Nicholas Gage. Eleni is is true story of growing up in Greece and his mother being executed for sending her children abroad during the civil war. Very harrowing in parts, I hadn't realised just what a hard time they had had. 'A Place For Us is the story of Nicholas after he had had been sent to America to be brought up by his father and aunts. Very amusing in parts and made me think of the Arilas people who had also gone to America.
Also love Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Much better than the film and the speech about marriage says it all.

Some very interesting suggestions here so thank you. I really want to read the Lawrence Durrell one so think that may be on the agenda.Interestingly, his biography states that he had a wife with him whilst in Corfu but no mnention in Gerry's books. Strange. I read the Island and greatly enjoyed also.

Jo I can absolutely see your pattern emerging and the one I would recommend more than any of the others is The Venetian House (sorry cant remember the author but it will be on Amazon) - it is one of those lovely stories you can lose yourself in and it is all set in Corfu.  Absolutely brilliant when reading it in the sun!  Enjoy!

Codevilla, Angelo M.

Nice one Kev, that made me smile on a cloudy Sunday morning.

I can't read on holiday, as there is too much to see, lots of people to talk to, and immersing yourself in the daily happenings in Arillas is the same to me as reading a book.

Afraid I'm the same as kev and Terry. I prefer to stare at the surroundings and "read" all that appears in front of me. It's why I can sit staring at Gravia for hours on end from Graziella. Jen wins too because it will shut me up long enough so she can .... read her book!

I always used to take a few books with me on holiday - in fact, "My Family and Other Animals" was one of my choices on my first visit to Arillas and I loved it, BUT I find now I may pick up and read a couple of books that other holidaymakers have left behind in the library of our accommodation but couldn't even begin to remember what they were! Probably some psychological thriller or other, but we tend to spend most of our time wandering around and meeting up with old and new friends

Unfortunately none of my reads, [well listens as I download audiobooks onto my ipod - saves on the arms whilst sunbathing and you don't have to wear sunglasses or risk eye wrinkles! :-)]  followed your theme but one is well worth recommending - Restless by William Boyd.  It was superb. I could not stop listening -possibly a combination of the story and the narrator.

Synopsis: It is 1939. Eva Delectorskaya is a beautiful 28-year-old Russian emigree living in Paris. As war breaks out she is recruited for the British Secret Service by Lucas Romer, a mysterious Englishman, and under his tutelage she learns to become the perfect spy, to mask her emotions and trust no one, including those she loves most. Since the war, Eva has carefully rebuilt her life as a typically English wife and mother. But once a spy, always a spy. Now she must complete one final assignment, and this time Eva can't do it alone: she needs her daughter's help

Like Kevin, Terry and Phil I never read while on holiday.
I'm too busy taking it all in and meeting friends, old as well as new.
For me reading is for the long, cold winter-times with not much else to do.
But being a writer I take notes every day and sometimes a novel comes out of it.

Hello all,
One of the best parts of being on holiday is being able to read without the interuption of housework and cooking, I can plough through 12 books in a fortnight if not more. The advent of the kindle has been fantastic as no longer have to fret over weight of loads of books in my luggage.
I love a varied selection, though have several favourite books that I can enjoy over and over..namely Mapp and Lucia series, anything by Scott Fitzgerald, Martina Cole, and biographies by the score...nosy parker love to hear about other peoples lives..ha! x

Blott on the Landscape by Tom Sharpe another favourite of mine.

The Ladies of Letters Collection is available as audiobook.

Anything by Colin Bateman!

Georgia how do you find the Kindle battery life? Is it possible to finish one book without a battery recharge? I wonder how you manage as you a such an avid reader?

I too take a Kindle to Arillas now, like you Georgia I find it superb, lots of room in my suitcase now, there was always loads of room on the way back as I always read everything I take, and more, but just carry one book usually a swop, on the flight back.

Atalanta, the Kindle battery life lasts days and you just recharge it by plugging it to the wall socket, you can charge it via your computer but I find the socket more convenient, you can also read while charging.
Since getting mine I have done a lot more diverse reading after loading lots of free books on, many of which I would not have bothered to buy or cart home from the library. All this from something the size of an envelope.

My holiday reading consists of 99% the same as everyone elses!! we seem to be a like minded lot, the other 1% are rereads from my youth, Neville Shute early Harold Robbins and other popular authors from the late fifties through to the seventies.

Thanks Val for the information about the Kindle. I find the adverts very off putting as I do think they look a bit silly! I am encouraged to get one after hearing that your reading is now more varied and you have good battery life.

Another favourite by Neville Shute is On the Beach. I haven't read The Carpetbaggers by Harold Robbins since I was in my twenties but I remember hiding it from my mother's prying eyes. It would be very tame by today's standards.

Thank you again

My Kindle is my new best friend, and have had it since last yr, keep downloading books for my visit back to Arillas in July first in 3yrs, since my stroke, they are brilliant, not carting loads of books in ya suitcase, it hold over 3000, so look out for the ones under £5, and there is loads for 99p. Roll on July 2012, cant wait, it will be our 24 or more time to visit xx No long walks for me now, :-( but I will still have a brilliant time from my wheel-chair/walking stick that will be for an odd small walk, lol

Mmmm I must look into these Kindles....Im such a fan of a good old book though, but I see myself being converted ladies - ah Harold Robbins, I too read all of his novels during my 20's they were a little raunchy then but as you rightly say Atalanta - very tame by todays standards.

Suzanne every one deserves a little new best friend and after your stroke what better way to enjoy your long awaited holiday next year...roll on your 25th visit.

I'm very interested in a Kindle. I'm trying to read 'Fall Of Giants' by Ken Follet but it's a great big hard back book.I know I'll enjoy it but it's so heavy it's awkard to hold. I'm sure a Kindle would be bril for something like that but I don't know which model would be best for me.

Hi, just to answer the question, Kindles are brilliant even in bright sun, have sat on our patio (when) the sun was shining no problem, if in doubt go onto Amazon and read the blog, downloaded 3 more free books yesterday, and a couple for 99p, BARGAIN :-) you will need the more expensive one for music.

Used my Kindle three times in Arillas since I bought it, once last year and twice this year, as Suzanne says it is brilliant.
I now have well over seventy books on it and have paid for about half of them, the rest were free down loads. Also the free ones are not rubbish most of them are very readable and a lot of them are the classics because their copyright has expired.
Every type of book is included from childrens to DIY. Another good thing is if you can get WI-FI were you're staying you can access the internet, great for keeping up with the forum or e-mails!

Both Jan and myself have the ordinary Kindle. We love them and saved so much weight in our luggage this year. Fortunately we both have the same taste in books so I just buy them once and download to both Kindles. Jan currently reading the Rebus series and I'm into Jack Reacher (Lee Childs). Also picking up now and again Michael Palin's tome about Nepal etc.

Hello all,
As many others say Kindles are amazing....and I was a sceptic as am one of those who could not imagine reading a book without dogearing to mark a page!
Battery charge lasts ages full charge lasts me about 6 books dependent on size.
Vainbill I too love Neville Shute have just read Town like Alice, first read at 18....over 30yrs ago and lovely to read it again wonderful read. I have found as my eyes get....weaker...Kindle makes reading much easier no need to read with outstretched arms as you can adjust size of print...I am such a convert as am a bit of a luddite really but this has changed my reading life, would also agree that books are so much cheaper, spotted a book I fancied in a real book shop today...was £9.99...came home downloaded it onto my kindle...£2.99!
Cannot reccomend it highy enough. xx

I've loved the positive reports for Kindle. For me holiday reading is the best. No guilt about should I be doing other things, just lie on my sunbed and as one book is finished pick up another.
It's my birthday next month guess what I'll be asking for.

from Val,

Honestly Val, I have never read a fiction book on holiday. The only books I read are factual or historic books about the place I am in or maps. I get my tails of history, exploration and every day life stories from the people who live or holiday there.

I can never sit still long enough to read a book.
Title: Re: Holiday Reading 2011!
Post by: Val n Bill on May 09, 2012, 01:28:59 AM

Terry, being a prolific reader I really don't understand how none fiction readers turn off from the rigours of everyday life, but I guess we all have our own methods. Both my daughter and I read all the time but my son and Bill only read fiction on holiday, and don't read much at home.
My own love of books goes back as long as I remember, way before I could even read.
I can even remember being told at the local library that I couldn't take certain books because they were from the adult section so Mum or Dad would book them out for me if they thought they were ok.

Like you I love maps and read them like books.  Google earth is the best thing anyone invented for the computer, but it's not as good as holding a real map.
As you say people tell the best stories and written down they become history.

Most fiction is based on knowledge of life, from classics to rubbish it tells of things that we don't experience in our own life, and maybe will never want to, but it carries you to those places.

You could say it gives you insight to the rest of the human race, just like history.

I never plan to read on holiday, whereas Carolyn reads all the time. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. If I do its usually in the second week and I use any delays home and the return flight to finish it off. I'd much prefer however to simply watch the world go by with a Mythos and ponder the great questions of the day........where to eat tonight :-)

I agree about the Kindle, I have had mine about two years now and beside buying books I have downloaded lots of free books, I just read the reviews if I don't know the author and have had quite a few very good reads, (and some rubbish).

There are lots of very good bargains on Amazon, and some good travel guides.
Lots of authors are not even printing but going straight to E-books.

You seem to be able to get any sort of book you want.

I read all the time, usually over 150 books per year, mainly fiction but I do read some non-fiction.

I have over 1500 books here waiting to be read, it's my addiction - I rarely watch TV.

Val - I think you may have been at Mathraki last May?  I think you arrived during our second week, forgive me if I am wrong.

I don't have a Kindle - mainly because I have so many 'tree' books yet to be read.  I also have my own book review blog and receives lots of pre-publication books from publishers.

One of my favourite parts of preparing for holiday is which books to take.  I always take books that I've had on my shelf for some time, and I always leave them on the bookshelf in the accommodation for other people to enjoy.  Some people fill their cases with shoes - I fill mine with books.  I will be taking 10 books with me this time.

Yes Anne we were there last May.....hello again, just read your very interesting blog.

What a super hobby you have, like you I take or should say took, books instead of shoes, usually about ten that Bill and I can swop and only ever came home with a book to read on the plane. Now we take about three and hundreds loaded on my Kindle which are also connected to the net book we take on holiday.  So sometimes we are reading the same book!
I still read books other guests leave but now can't leave as many for other guests :(

Terry, Val, Sounds to me like the best thing you can do is get hold is to get a copy of The precise all new road atlas of Corfu. It is a real marval.
Stephen spent 3 yrs traveling on foot mountain bike, scooter & car with a compass altimeter and a hand held global positioning system. Every public road, footpath& track. It is a fantastic piece of work.
We took one over for The Boss and he had never seen anything like it and said he will always treasure it, and I reckon he knows his way around pretty well.

The map is a handrawn map by Stephan Jaskulowski, it remains the definitive, and best map of the island - ever.  Stephan is selling his map for £4.99 plus £2 P&P in the UK.
He is offering a special rate of £3.50 plus £2 P&P or 'Two for £5' plus £2 P&P to CTG forum members and for every sale of the map one Euro is donated to the Agni Animal Welfare Fund.
Stephan is selling his map and supporting  the AAWF in memory of 'Bonnie' - pictured here in Nisaki with his mother Flo.
To purchase a copy of the Corfu map, please email Stephan direct, he will then contact you to arrange payment. By buying the map you will not only be purchasing one of the best maps of Corfu but supporting Corfu's stray animals also. Thank you for your support.

Thanks for the Info Viv, but I did buy that map for my first visit to Corfu and I didn't like it at all. In my opinion this map is much better as it was based on maps drawn up by the Greek army....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Corfu-Island-Map-Road-Editions/dp/B001PAVAHQ/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1336656185&sr=8-14.

It is currently unavailable from Amazon but I am sure it can still be bought from specialist shops. In the last two years, I have found Google Maps on my phone very reliable and accurate.

Ive not looked at that one Terry, Im just the kind of person that likes going down little tracks that are sometimes almost unpassable, so I dont really need one at all. Bought Stephens as I had spoken to him on the forum and he helped me to find CDR (before it moved) and im quite happy with it. Might take a look at the one on amazon when they are back in stock. Viv

Jo, Angela

What is it about 50 shades of Grey my daughter mentioned last night that they were
all talking about it at work and the first thing I see this morning when I look at the
forum is Jo asking about it

Well Julied, it's rather naughty.  A titilating read but with a good story line to back it up;)

Angela, apparantly it had taken the female population by storm!! Would take a awful lot to shock/surprise me however so I am reserving judgement until I (RUSH!!!) to buy it!!

Ladies the 50 shades trilogy for some reason is one you will not put down!!!
I bought the first edition £25 when it came out last year as I have good friends who know the author very well, so I had a bit of a heads up (sorry for the pun) bought a kindle to read the rest of the trilogy over the winter months, but i purposely left the remaining 15% to read during my week in Arillas....

Getting a bit anxious about our holiday in Arillas in Sept now - I'll be wondering what everyone is reading!!  Personally for me a good murder or thriller is best!  Like a bit of James Patterson, Lee Childs etc. myself...

Terry, I would love to tell you about the changes but think it best for you to see them first hand, we can confer when you return, we were in 206 and daughter 106 this year which she particularly liked as she had her own private patio for early evening sun bathing........however I will give you a clue as to some of the refurb and ironically its in the book title "50 shades of grey"

I think Helen will be tied up reading, so I had better go and investigate as soon as we get there.

Hi Jo, I have read Feta compli and a trial of chasing dreams in Lefkas, both are very good. I ahve treated myself to  a Kindle and you can download trials of books, usually a couple of chapters. I am going to buy the other books in the Ramblings from rhodes series as I love anything about moving to Greece.
