Title: Kaloudis Village and dogs
Post by: Jooles on February 04, 2011, 07:55:41 PM
I am thinking of booking a holiday at the Kaloudis Village Apartments. I have a son who is terrified of dogs, could anyone advise me as to whether dogs are allowed around the complex. Is Arillas a dog's paradise or are they reasonably kept under control?
Thanks in anticipation.

I cant say anything about Kaloudis village, but generally there are few dogs around Arillas like in any village in Greece.

They are usually with their owners but sometimes you see them independently checking out the action. But over the years I have never seen the dogs bother anyone uninvited.

I get on with the canine kind and I tend to hang around a lot with Charlie in Thalassa, but in the hot sun he is not the most active sort ;)

Hi Jools, Arillas is not the kind of place that is overrun with dogs like some.
There are a few about but they are very well looked after and don't scronge for food or bother you at all that way.
One could decide that it wants to take awalk with you but if you tell it to go away      ( fige ) it will.
My Grand daughter ran in front of a car the other day to avoid a dog, so I know what this problem is like. Thank Goodness she likes our Kizzy. Viv

Thanks Erja and Vivian, I think Son (and I) can cope with that.
I love the picture of Charlie!
Looking forward to our first visit to Corfu, reading through the posts on this forum it sounds like Arillas is a wonderful place to relax in.

Jooles, besides being a wonderful place for every age group, the beach, tavernas and most of all the people of the village are the best you will find in all of Corfu or the rest of  Greece.
Book your holiday and come to paradise, I promise you, you will want to come back again and again.

Jools, I agree with all the above, but "billy the greek" at Kalloudis does have a couple of yappy little dogs which do come into the bar area. Billy is usually with them but they do sometimes run ahead. I'm sure it could be scary for a young child who is already scared of dogs, but it may also help the child overcome their fear. You'll see a picture of Billy with one of his dogs riding his scooter on the forum, so they are not always running around like loons.
You won't find a more friendly resort than arillas, and Kalloudis is a very family friendly place with great food and good company.

Nic and John have said what I started posting. We get on famously with the two dogs at Kaloudis. FiveO has even been known to be carried from a boat by young Billy to avoid getting wet! Kaloudis is a favourite of many on the forum, and we thoroughly enjoyed staying there. Lovely pool, lovely people. Right on the beach, central for all the amazing tavernas in Arillas. Sure you will enjoy.

Hi Jooles - it will be our fourth time this May at Kaloudis and I can confirm what other forum members have said. Yes, Billy has two dogs - one very small (the "yappy" one) basically ignores everyone and does his own thing. The larger one of the two (Fivo) tends to be Billy's constant companion and is very very laid back.

I've just tried to add the photo that the others have spoken about but it didn't work. I'll try again in another post but, rest assured, the dogs at Kaloudis and in Arillas itself do not present a problem to anyone

Well, from all the comments I think we will be ok. My son is a teenager but will still avoid dogs at all costs (including loss of his life) running in front of cars to get to the opposite side of the road! After a week he will probably have sussed out a route down the high street to avoid the maximum number of doggy residents!

Holiday now booked! Arriving 19th August for 2 weeks, can't wait.

Certainly will! My last trip abroad was to Helsinki, (Helldone Festival 2009/2010) Finland fascinates me. I loved wandering around the city, even though it was -14 degrees and dark by 14.30! No wonder you love Corfu!

Jooles, our Erja is another cornerstone of the forum. We have spent many an enjoyable hour in her company, and plan many more. She is such an ambassador for Finland, as is her friend Heidi. They both love Arllas just as much as we do, and they are such fun to be with.

If you open your heart, Arillas will fill it with peace and friendship. And it is real with the local folk and many of the tourists.

Your son will be surprised by the laid back Arillas dogs. I am friends with most of them. But there was one who bit me. The story is there in previous holiday reports, but I should have known better.

Your son won't get run over in Arillas, crossing the "road" or not. And he will probably end up being friends with some of the dogs.

Have a great time, and tell us what you thought by posting on here. Whatever that is, we can cope with others' views that differ from ours.

Phil

Seen lots of snakes on Corfu, most of them dead on roads, the " tarantulas" are just large spiders that you can see anywhere warm..... Scorpions I don't know, never seen one myself, only on Kos. Take lots of repellent the mossies are the most scary of the three.

Val no need for the inverted comma's over the word Tarantula- southern european one's are the originals, named before the nastier south american variety apparently. I haven't seen one yet, but I'm sure I'd break the four minute mile if I did! I think their full name is Lycosa Tarantula- I almost wish I'd never read any Gerald Durrell now!

Just to add to Nics very acurate post about the naming of these spiders - first discovered in the vicinty of the Southern Italian port of Taranto (hence the name) they live in underground burrows and are actually nocturnal animals and very timid of large mammals which is why you will probably never ever see one, and even if you do they can run away very quickly! So no need to worry about these creatures - as Val says, it's the mossies you need to worry about !!!

Jooles, Phil hasn't told you how he go bitten bur just incase that is worrying you it was his own bl--dy fault. lol. Never seen a spider out there and as for snakes, dead yes alive no thought I saw one once but am told it was a slow worm. Viv

Thank God I've never seen a tarantula yet Nic and Geoff, not scared of spiders but I wouldn't  want to meet one of them if I was one my own, although in saying that I am always the first to handle anything they  show in the petting area of zoos when we take the grandsons there, just never been offered a tarantula yet!!!

The dogs are so laid back they don't even bother with the cats, who are only interested if you have food. Seen snakes, not in Arillas though and a few squashed rats, but thats about it.

We sometimes see snakes crossing the road on the late night walk back from Tri adelphia to the see front, along with toads and fireflies (early in the season). Funny how most assumed the post re spiders was from Nic, she isn't too bad with all that stuff, which is fortunate because even though I'm more than twice her size I am useless!

Wow, sounds like a haven for wildlife! Come to think of it, wasn't Corfu the island where Gerald Durrell lived as a child?
Quite glad the spiders live in burrows and are nocturnal! My daughter has quite a piercing scream when she sees anything with more than 4 legs.

Can't believe how many posts have been generated by my original request for information, and how interesting they all are, look forward to meeting some of the posters in person!

Sorry another question! (or two)

Are there mosquito nets over the beds in Kaloudis Apartments? Or does one just drench oneself in chemicals 24 hours a day!

Is aircon payable by the week, and roughly how much is it?

Thanks.

Jooles

No there are no mosquito nets. When we've stayed there we just use the plug in thingys and have a dose of spray before going out at night and again before having a last glass on the balcony/patio.

Hi Jooles

We are heading back to Kaloudis for the umpteenth time - regarding dogs - "peri" is the little one & getting on in years - may well be why he's a little yappy - but I do stress yappy, not snappy. I'm not a dog person but have no trouble with either of Billy & Eleni's dogs - Fivo is simply a big softie & lies back so his tummy can be tickled. Regarding Mossies - nets not provided, but air con is available - I believe the cost is 5 euro per day - we tend not to bother with it (although going in May & Sept we tend to avoid the worst of it) but do tend to light a "citronella" candle regularly & tend to find this keeps the little bu**ers away ( the mossies that is). Sure you will enjoy your stay & become an Arillas Addict like the rest of us.

Hi Jools,
I've never needed aircon during my visits ( June and Sept.)
but DO take everything needed for the mossies as they can
really be annoying (and don't wear perfume as it attracts them).

Don't worry about the few dogs around, they are all very friendly.

Wishing you a great holiday.

We do occasionally go July/August when it is really hot but rarely feel the need for aircon.
I was told some years ago by a local (- can't remember who), that the trick is to keep the shutters closed all day but the windows open. This keeps the sun out but allows the air to circulate, and it seems to work just fine.
We also adopt this technique when we sleep - it keeps the bedrooms cool and allows the mozzies to escape from the plug-in thingies.

Angie

P.S.  Don't worry about the dogs , Jooles. There's only a handful around the village and they're really not a problem.

Citronella candles seem to work well keeping the mossies away, but you do need to be careful, don't get drunk, fall asleep, knock over the candle, set fire to the table, your hair and the balcony for instance!

:D I knew there was a reason why I don't have candles in my room! :D :D

As for mossies, I  use the plug in mossie repellant in the room and I drown myself in eau de Jungle Formula in the evenings and in the last couple of years NO BITES at all, drunk or sober ;)

We went to Arillas last year for the first time, my wife is terrified of dogs, except our own! as everbody says, the local dogs are well fed and cared for, one even walked with us to the top of Afionas, then left us! after we had fed and watered it! We are returning to Arillas 23rd May, it really is a wonderful place to relax and meet local people, who are so friendly, and the food is good too! hope you have a great time
