the island was usually sprayed with insecticide in years past but unfortunatley the local population started to develope chest complaints and the spraying was stopped much to the delight of the little buggers

Dimitris, was telling us about the sprayingof the mozzies.they stopped doing it for 2 reasons.the first was because it was making people ill and the second was for enviormental reasons. The secret is to put the mozzie cream on before you go out in an evening, putting it on any exposed skin including the face, but be careful of the eyes and lips.I also put some on above my socks under my trousers.I put a tablet in the mozzie killer before we go out and then a fresh one when we come back in.I have not been biten for about 20 years.

I have just recently read an advert in the "Times Travel Section" about an insect repellant called "Jungle Formula" - No joke - Honest!!
The Jungle Formula standard range is, as they quote, for use in
non-tropical areas. It does not give a price though.
Site is www.jungleformula.co.uk.

yeah iv heard of that too.a few of the ppl stayin in our apartments had it.seemed to work wel enough, not on me tho i still managed to get biten sum how.i do remember a few of them gettin biten also but not as much as me. think no matter wat tho they are attracted to different ppl. maybe sumthin to do with the blood? i dunno.the women were tortured with them  , possibly sexist???
-
just did a wee bit of research there on internet, bored silly in work, it seems that nobody knows exactly wat mozzies are attracted to but that they go for carbon dioxide and lactic acid emmissions, so my advice just dont breath out (carbon dioxide) n ul be fine  8)

So anyway, - What was this topic originally about ??
Ah! - I remember. Mozzies.
I seem to think that, a few years, they advertised a wrist band that had a small battery in it and, when on, emitted a sound which was supposed to keep these little blood suckers away. Does anyone remember these?
Did they ever work, we wonder?

-
wats rong wiff mi spellin?Lindypops.
Eggy i dont remember those wrist bands at all.I do know that i have to be careful i don't get bitten as i get huge lumps where the bite is though and thats why i am so careful
-
talk sense

Harold
I got it slightly wrong on the wrist band. Someone in work remembers them though. It was a small battery operated box that clipped to your belt for an evening out. Apparently, and not heard by the human ear, the high pitched sound it gave out was supposed to deter the mozzies.

Hello Eggy,
Better for you than all those chemicals i suppose, did they work though?

Jungle Formula according to my misses is the best she has used.
It also keeps the Elephants away as well - have you ever seen an elephant in Arillas ?? - no thought not - so it must work
-
Harold
I don't think they worked as well as the "Jungle Formula"
Well - At least according to R & C.

hi Folks,
Just a quick word on the jungle formula! It doesn't work on midges up here in Scotland.... I know because i've tried it. Ouch!
-
Malky
I suppose that's one of the problems of wearing that Kilt!

I worked with someone about 25 years ago now and he used to holiday in Scotland. He was told to use jungle fomular(he went camping),but he told me it didnot kill the midgies they just stuck to his face in the liquid.
-
The thing about the midges, is that unlike mozzies you get 3 or 4 at a time , the midge comes out in their millions! :x
They get in your ears and up your nose and they bite like Hell,
 ( the little S#*ts, Got myself scratching just thinking about them.........lol).
So i quite like the mozzies
Well i can cope with them :!:
-
Hi all,
I arrived back from arillas on Monday  i loved everything about it and wil certainly be returning as soon as possible.
I usually get eaten by mozzies but i used Jungle Formula and didn't get bit once! I was very supprised but i used it non stop. When i ran out i found the Autan to be just as good, i found towards the end of the holiday, as arillas got busy there were alot more mozzies about.
I have been very poorly since i got back though, not sure if it was the food on the plane that has made me ill but i have been in bed for days..... never mind though i have fantastic memories of arillas to dream about!
-
2 more sleeps!
-
Hi lindypops,
Well if thats a picture of you,
Hey Mal now you know who to look out for
Anyway enjoy your holiday Lindy' :P
-
Cheeky minky,lol.
-
Thanks malky,I will. Is your name Malcolm, by any chance!!
-
This is fascinating - I do hope you enjoy your hols Lindypops !!
Back to the mozzies.....has anybody tried Avon's Skin so Soft dry oil spray? We use it here in Scotland and it keeps the midges at bay. Doesn't smell too bad, sort of unisex, it's not intended as a midge spray.....here comes a long story.......about 8 years ago a Scottish doctor and his wife moved out to Barbados, the wife discovered when she used the dry oil spray after her shower she didn't get bitten.....word spread back home to Scotland and before you knew it, everybody was buying the stuff......up here we even sell it to the tourists who have tried Jungle Formula (which doesn't deter the humble midge).....even the army use it when on exercise up here!
Looks like I better take a bottle along :D
-
   Thanks bobandjoice, I certainly will. Arillas is lovely. I will try the Avon stuff next time. If it`s good enough for the trossachs, it will be fine in Arillas. Bfn.
-
Hi lindypops,
Yes my name is Malcolm, but everybody calls
me Malky 8) . How have we met :?:
I remember the S.A.S. came to Scotland on exercise
and fled after about an hour because of the midges

I use Mosquito Milk, i swear by it. I used it throughout Malia last year and also in South Africa did not get biten once. Used to be able to buy it from Boots but have stopped seeling it. Have to buy it off the internet know from a health shop. Its in a glass bottle and it looks like milk. I really do swear by it and recommend it to anyne.

-
lol.hhmmm think everyone is thinkin the same, thought thats wat private msgs wer for??come on ppl, back to the original subjects!
-
Just wondering are the mozzies alot more of a problem number wise in the summer moths then May and October, we have never been anywhere with mozzies before during the months in between because I get bitten so badly but are thinking about maybe visiting in July if it's not much worse. Viv
-
me and my friends went to Rhodes in June and we all got bitten really badly all up our legs. We had to get antibiotics when we got home. we used autan spray and it still didn't stop them.
It may be different in corfu though.
i am taking my mosquito milk with me to arillas then i may not get bitten. Fingers crossed. :)
-
i must admit we went in july and
there was loads of mozzies. :(
i use autan and take anthistamines also.
i didnt get bit.
there was also a lot of flying ants they were disgusting
suexx
-
 I got bitten to death this July which was areal shock as I have been to Crete twice and Rhodes and never get bitten at all, although the people that I went with did. Do the Corfiot mossies have different tastes I wonder?
Sue x
-
Only the bes  t
-
I'd never been bitten in my life before i went to corfu and i'm fairly well travelled. Maybe The in corfu they're more desperate and will bite anything in sight?
Vivian...i like your theory! :D
Annie222-where can you by the mosquito milk (what website) and how much is it?
Sarah xXx
-
Sarah its from a website called
www.auravita.com and its about £8 delivered, it really did work for me and my family in south africa who made me leave it there for them. Hope it works for you!
-
I usually get bitten by the little beggars, but since using jungle formula have only been bitten once. Gets a thumbs up from me.
