ger luvver, after the demise of the ATM, we are going to buy travellers cheques in sterling and change them at Olga's. We might well get it wrong but it is like backing a horse in the Grand National. Our key issue is that we don't have to get the bus to Sidari and lose half of one of our precious days in Arillas, only to find the machine is empty.

Have a great time - like my Jen I can see your excitement mounting as you prepare....

love from Phil

We got 1.117 to the £ when we bought from Crown Currency Exchange for our holiday in May, BUT Barry lost them (and found them when we got back home!!)
We got 1.034 to the £ from Thomas Cook at Manchester Airport - NEVER NEVER NEVER again.
In Arillas itself the rate averaged 1.15......

I'd take either sterling or travellers cheques and change there

Have a great holiday, Ger and Phil and anyone else who's going soon

Have a great time yous lot, luvvers.

It amazes me how we are now worrying about 1.12, 1.15. Not very long ago it was worrying about 1.52 or 1.55. Ask our Egg and Wegg.

We all seem to get used to what these politicians dish out while they buy new houses and live the life of Reilly, claiming it all back on expenses. F**k the exchange rate. Irrelevant. I'll get paid.... 30 tonnes of manure? I knew politicians in Britain were s**t but here in Somerset they bought tonnes of it on taxpayers money.

Doncherjustluv our innocent, naive Arillas?  Well believe that and you'll beleive anything. Naive yes, innocent no. Arillas is adorable, but full of people. And all that goes with that. And I love it and all its warts. Agree or disagree, it won't change my ambitions.

Aye, behind you Phil. Agree with what you`re saying. Anyhow, I met a lady in town today, from your part of the world. Really lovely, and at LJM`S.

Lindy luvver, I'm a simple man (as many would testify...) who is truly happily married to a woman who loves me too. You know that already. Not even sure why I said that, perhaps I needed to. Jen will read it tomorrow...

But please explain LJM'S. I can imagine all sorts, but have really never seen that one. So hope to see you for real one day in Arillas.

Although the rate isn't good at the minute we didn't spend as much as we normally do - what's different I don't know as we did what we do every time we visit and had mam with us.

As the Beatles sang "Its getting better all the time"

This is on the BBC website today

The pound has hit a fresh 19-month high against the euro as the 16-nation currency comes under renewed pressure.

The pound rose almost half a cent to 1.2389 euros, its highest level since the immediate aftermath of the financial crisis in November 2008.

The pound is likely to strengthen further against the euro over the summer, according to analysts.

If correct, this suggests you would be better off waiting to buy euros for your summer holiday, although the difference is likely to be small.

Duncan Higgins at Caxton FX says the rate could rise by two cents in the next month or so - from the current 1.23 euros level to 1.25 euros.

Bear in mind that this is the institutional rate - you won't get such a good rate online or at a bureau de change.

Travelex is offering a rate of 1.1937 to its online customers.

This means you would get 596.85 euros for £500. If the rate went up by two cents, you would get 606.85 euros.

Crown have a cancelled contract for delivery end August,  at €1.26. I've just booked some for our September trip. While we were away in June our Nationwide cc was giving €1.19 to €1.21 which I thought was good.

We've used them a few times without any problems at all.  It all arrives when it says it does.  At the moment I am procrastinating - will it go up any more before we go in 7 weeks time!  When do I order, now or later?!

Currency Kiosk in the centre where I work was 119.4 today
120.2 if you buy 450 euro

I found Post Office was better if you order online and collect "in store"

BUT Crown Currency exchange rate usually better..

Does it matter? Not one iota - we afficionados will still go, no matter what!

Yammas!

I'm really tempted tu use crown but am just terrified of sending all that money through cyberspace! Knowing us they would go bust or something.  My friend got 120.1 on our high street by ringing and tellin them what crown were offering so worth a try.

personally we always take ponds sterling with us and change it at the rainbow, makes little difference to how many euro's we get on the whole and i would rather give my business to jimmy and spiros rather than mr natwestbarclaysmidlandslloyds

Hi Jo

I paid it via online banking, its eaxactly the  the same as paying a bill on line, so you would have a record of the money going out on your statement.

Went to Travelhouse agency today to get currency.  Got 1.16 rate, which is a hell of a lot better than  June 2009 when it was 1.07.
Will leave it a few weeks and see what it`s like then or maybe take sterling and change it in Corfu.

Title: Sterling or Euro travellers cheques
Post by: pvjam on September 24, 2011, 06:06:02 PM
Off to Arillas on Monday, just been in to Thomas Cook and they advise taking Euro cheques not Sterling. Has anyone any thoughts. Today they were offering 1.11. Staying at the Rainbow where i know they offer currency exchange, so it might seem a silly question but im wondering if anyone has had experience of using both. Not flying till 6pm from Bristol so it will be a quick trip in to town Monday morning to sort the finances. Thanks

Paul

There is little difference. We always take Sterling travellers cheques and change them with Olga Vigly (Olga's Travel.) In the balance we always seem to get a slightly better exchange rate after commission than we would have had in the UK. I can't understand why exchanging your pounds into euro cheques in the UK could be beneficial. Isn't there then a commission for turning them into cash when you're using them? To me it sounds like another ruse by the Tour Opertors - but then I'm already cynical about them.

Someone please shoot me down in flames if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that was good advice.

Phil

If you bring Euro cheques home you can't pay them into your bank without changing them back to sterling and paying to do so.
We have never used them, but sterling t/cheques can be  paid in with no charge just like any cheque. (if you have any left).
We usually take euros in cash and use first, plus t/c to change when we need to.

Hi folks ,just read an interesting article regarding the Euro, I for one didn't realise that each country has its own identification letter and number
Heres the link

At the end of the day on a 2 week holioday the different rates quoted on this posting will not make us rich or broke, it is our holiday and no matter what arillas will get every penny we can change to have a great time, be that a little or a lot - bring it on, Monday in the Rainbow once again.

Hear hear Paul and Denise. I am aware of the exchange rate discussion, but often wonder why folks bother - the differences are so small compared to what you spend on flights etc, one should use whatever is most convenient. In our case it would be the ATM, but sadly we can't any more.

Have a great stay at the Bow, and give Spiros and Jimmy and all of their families our love and best wishes. We won't see them end of this October, unless they want to join us for an out-of-season drink, but certainly will on 14th July next summer. DONCHERJUSTLOVEM??? (Apologies to humptydumpty)

Thanks for the info Val, i never knew you could pay sterling cheques back into your bank account and that option suits me (like you say if we have some left) The last time we went to Arillas it was Drachma currency to start the holiday and then good old sterling cheques, everywhere weve been since then, in Europe, weve always had ATM facilities so no need for cheques. The question was never about how do i save 10 euros over the course of a holiday in Arillas with currency exchange. Thanks again.

The only thing you have do if you're paying into your own account is you have to counter sign in front of the cashier just like when you cash them.
Hope you have some left! Lol Val x

If i was over there now(boo hoo wishing I was) or anytime over the next few weeks - exchange what you need on a daily basis only - no point in having lots of Greek euros, just in-case they default - sterling will always remain strong enough in any currency - just something I heard which made sense.

How can such a w****r ever be right Sandy? Particularly in your part of the public services. I know I'd rather be poor in NW Corfu than here. At least I could drown myself in warm sea.

Will shut up now.

Such is life meluvver. No guarantee that we'll be in't mood for a late one when we get in. Who knows? Will probably head for the Nut but it will be 1am minimum, and likely as not we won't, and will just collapse in bed and wait for avrio. And not 9am....

Managed about 3 seconds with yous in Brouklis this year. Maybe we can do 6 seconds next year. Or will that be too much for yous???
