For weeks now I have been unable to access the webcam with the message that the owner needs to logon and the stream is de-activated. Have assumed I would wait for Dimitris to fix it when he had time. Was never going to push it, after all it is his time off.
I've been missing it though.
Others have commented on the webcam images since, so now I don't know what is going on. Can you help please Dimitris?

The live stream has been inactive for quite a few months. The live stream needs to be hosted and to get it hosted you have to pay or be plagued with adverts. If I remember correctly the webcam was hosted on a different site, just over a year ago, but you had to view adverts before seeing the live stream.
Maybe Dimitris is looking for another site to host it or maybe the second webcam, that did the live streaming, could be out of action. I think I can remember seeing a webcam on the tiles of the Horizon as seen from the other webcam during one of the storms.
Dimitris is always striving to improve the website, at his own cost and time, and we may get more additions and surprises in the next few months. I am still amazed by his dedication to this forum and website. A lot of equipment is required to beam the signal from the Horizon, across the village to a server or PC, and then to get the stream transferred to a hosting site for us to view it.
I went out on to the roof at the Horizon last year and this is the equipment that beams the signal across the village.

Finally Akis came by yesterday to sort out my networking architecture so that I can be able to run my own webcam server and you can view the arillas webcam live as much as this is possible with the means that we use.
you can now test it here http://www.arillas.com/page/en/live-view-test/
let me know if you have any problems by reporting it with replies to this thread.
Wish me good luck with this...
Dimitris

Thanks, Dimitris
It works fine although doesn't seem as clear as it used to be. Maybe Eggy could climb up and give it a clean.
I have also added the link, with a 1 second refresh rate, .........
http://arillas.dyndns.tv:8083/cam_4.jpg?uniq=0.40542537896069075
............to my Google Home page and it looks good.
You are spoiling us again :-)
-
Yes Dimitris - it`s working well. Good luck with it.
Terry, the link you gave does seem to be clearer.
-
but Terry, there is no movement on your link, there is constant movement on Dimitris`link.
-
Geoffrey,
I add that link to my Google home page - do a search for " Igoogle" and you will see what I mean. There are many apps available. I also have local traffic cams.
You can add any webcam you like, and get movement.
Everytime I do a search my home page looks like this

Cool Terry - really cool. will try it for sure.
-
Works just fine here Dimitris, on Internet Explorer 8.0. Many, many thanks
Phil
Will have a play Terry and Geoffrey.....
-
Wonderful to have it back....thanks Dimitri. Looking forward to seeing it, and all of you, ....for real very soon.
-
Whoo-Hoo! It's what lunchtime at work was made for. 74 days and counting until we don't need the webcam :-)

Igoogle and such applications are good but concerning live web cams especially ours,
we have to be less "greedy" with the bandwidth that such system would need to run.
Terry you must remember that the Upload Bandwidth that I;m using for the live streaming is not higher than 256kb/s.
If a webcam image is 43kb then we can only have maximum 5 viewers watching simultaneously.
Therefore I have set the refresh rate to 1fps (frame per second) which would increase the number of viewers depending on the average time they spend on the live cam.
soon it will be possible to upgrade my connection to a little higher speeds but it will always be a problem for multiple viewers.
I;m trying to find a way to stop viewers from leaving permanetly their browser's window open in order to have a live view when ever they like. or for those who would leave their pc on for ever with the live cam always on.
there must be some ways that I’m going to investigate …
untill then...
stay tunned!!!

Dimitris, I wish I could answer your problem but I understand it. Every static image of our favourite place is likely to be 40kbytes or more. Then 25+ frames per second multiplied, even compressed by mp3/4 it is a helluva lot of data. Then they leave the stream on their desktop 24/7...... 2000 odd users..... hopeless as a service provider.
From my Arillas persona though, I still love the 1 fps view. It gives me daily peace and joy. The very fact it moves gives me comfort. Somehow the static pictures are less real. Even an animated gif might make me feel better. 1500 km away, I am always there but when I am really there, I feel 0km away from home.
Better shut up now

Don't worry Dimitris, I only see the Live webcam when I go to my Google search page.
The difference is that when you go to it via the forum, you know you are going to see it, but when it appears on the search page its just a nice feeling to get a glimpse of it when you are in the middle of something else. It can be a distraction, but a very nice distraction.
I hope that makes sense

OMG'D Dimitris...I never gave it a thought until I read Ejra's post...I have a link on my website. Let me know if it affects your bandwidth.

My dear girls,
Don;t you worry! linking to the webcam or the webcam's picture does not effect the bandwidth we are talking about.
also, it would n;t effect my bandwith if you place a picture of me on your bedroom's wall.
;)
Cheers,
