Title: Mosquitos
Post by: lew19 on January 11, 2010, 11:07:58 PM
Can anyone help or give me some good advice?

Each time that I have been to Greece, I have been covered in mosquito bites (usually 30 plus)l. I have used a plug in, a body spray repellent and after sun that contains an insect repelllent, but nothing works for me.

Please help so that I can enjoy my holiday without unsightly legs and being awake all night itching

Thanks in anticipation

Lynda

Jen's recipe is to protect lower legs when out eating etc:
Early evening - all over feet, ankles and up to he knees with 50% DEET (eg Boots Jungle Stregth.) Pop Sox under feminine floaty trousers. Light spray over any other exposed skin.

It has transformed her time in Arillas. She only seems to get one or two these days.

Hope it helps

Like Phil says the only really anti mosi sprays that work are the ones containing Deet i've tried everything but deet based sprays are the only thing that work for me
My son never uses anything and the little blighters dont bother him 1 iota

Sorry Connie, I am English but still couldn't explain what deet is

All I do know is that last June the little blighters seemed to just love the deet spray we used, and Colin especially got loads more bites by using it.....

I use Marmite for the vitamin B, Skin so Soft and Superdrug's Buzz Off spray.... then still have to wash my hands and get bitten on them....

Hi Lynn,
Oh my, oh my. Now I'm back to square one!!
We don't have Marmite in Denmark. Guess I just have to live with it then.
But I've become quite an expert in killing the little bastards though:

One night I'd forgotten to close my balcony door and they just came in attacking like Japaneese Kamikaze-pilots!!! I got 26 of them and felt I won the battle!!!
(just wonder what my neighbours thought if they had heard all that slapping!)

Hi Tony,
Thank you for the information. I will have to print that out and take it
to my pharmacist. Living next to a wood I'm used to mosquitos, they are in fact
much larger here but for some reason not half as much aggressive.

I've tried everything. Vitamin B supplements, skin so-soft etc & I still get bitten badly, but I am bitten less when I use a formula containing deet.
Has anyone tried using a personal mosquito repeller? They clip onto a belt or waistband or can be carried in a pocket. They emit a high pitched signal which is inaudible to humans. I've seen them for sale on eBay & Amazon.

Yes I use a personal mosquito repeller all the time time, I even keep one on by the bedside all night, in fact I have four (greedy I know) they run on LR44 batteries, the little round ones. Jimmy in the Rainbow hates the noise, it is a bit like having tinnitus. I bought them on a First Choice flight. Certainly works for me.

The little b******s kept us away from Arillas for four years. Jen was so ill and had seventeen blisters lanced, some of them two inches across... She still carries the scars all over her legs.

DEET is a chemical substance that seems to prevent them from attacking your skin, rather than reducing the effects. Tony's link might boggle your mind, and the diagram of the structure is wrong on wiki. But in the end who cares. Use DEET sprays and remember, when you are just going out for the evening, beware. You are all washed and dressed up for a fabulous Arillas meal, you are wearing your sexiest outfit that shows more than it should... (well I usually do lol)

It isn't the men you need to look out for (most of us there are past it anyway....) it is the mozzies. That's when you get bit.

Jen now seems to have it beaten. But never lets her guard down. Me? They hate me. Like your son Tony, I have never been bitten by one.

And Sara luvver, Jen had one of those and it was useless. Don't waste your money.

LOL you are a real tonic Phil!

I took Jen's approach last year in the Maldives evening wear must include long trousers and socks to avoid bites on feet. Three quarter sleeves are also a good idea if you can cope with them. Skin so soft by Avon is very good and you can leave it on your hands which helps, no little fingers getting bitten. If you do this in the evening you avoid the worst part of the day and have to take your chances during the day time.

I had several bad bites when I tried Jungle formula and Boots own repellant but skin so soft Avon has been the most effective. The only time i got a bite was when I got a bit cocky and left it off and used the repellant only !!

If you cover up it will save you a lot of AGONY and you can still be sexy and alluring at the end of the evening with the benefit of air conditioning !!!

Cheers Nan xxx

Nan luvver, so are you.

So wish we had been there with you and Lynn and Colin and our MartinW and....

I just wanted to comment on the "what to wear" question. Women can look and be very sexy when covered up. But they certainly don't achieve that when vast arrays of exposed skin are covered in bites and blisters....

and you'll still be in the mood when you get home.....

julie, I didn't see your post while doing mine. Usually you get a warning but apparently both went through. So it all looks like it wasn't. It looks like I was simply contradicting you, but I hadn't read what you had said. I was being honest - Jen bought one and got six bites within the first hour.

I was hurt by your barbed tone - I know I post a lot and say a lot, but it wasn't worthy of the julie I met in Rainbow to take advantage and stab me. I forgive - it was a misunderstanding. At least I hope so.

Thank you Julie & thank you Phil. I value both of your opinions. What works for some, doesn't for others. I may consider purchasing one. £6 [ish] is a small price to pay IF it works for me & I can have a bite free holiday. There are several makes so I'll do a little research first.

Sara, i've always been bitten to buggery with the little b's, but the last twice i think i've cracked it. I wear lavender oil and eucalyptus oil as perfume. The real perfume stays at home. Also take phils jens advice and wear trousers and sleeves in the evening. I also take deet free spray i buy in a camping shop as i'm allergic to deet.As a bonus we always stay at the akti because all the windows and balcony doors have mosquito screens fitted. Hope you find something that works for you. Glenda

Thanks Glenda, I'll have to try the lavender & eucalyptus, even if I do smell like my Gran with a cold. LOL. I have read that the little B's don't like lavender & also peppermint oil.
Another remedy I came across on Google was to spray yourself with [original] Listerine mouthwash!!
We do use screens & air-conditioning at nightime, so I'm not bitten while I sleep, its just when we go out in the evening that I'm attacked.

Bit of a late reply, this one, but I'm new to the site. Sandra, my wife suffers quite badly, but  mostly when sleeping. The remedy ha sbeen to book a palce with air-conditioning - works an absolute treat. Going out at night is just a case of covering up, and spraying any exposed bits with a decent spray.

Thanks Jo,
I'll make a note on that. I've Tried everything:
Eating garlic daily (tzatziki), lots of wine, UZO, sprays ofcourse, and sticks after
being bitten. Still have scars on my legs from last years attacks!!
How come the mosquitos are so aggressive only to visitors??!!
The locals don't seem to have a problem.

We have mosquitos 3 times the size here in Denmark (been bitten twice already)
as I'm living next to a wood, but they don't itch as bad and they never leave scars.
Someone also suggested putting on cedar-scent or lavandar instead of perfume,
will be trying that as well.

Heaven has its downsides. For Jen it is the mozzies. But our strategy of Jungle Strength early evening/late afternoon, and cover-up when out in the evening has worked. After she got 17 puffy bites in 2003, all lanced by the local doctor, scars still evident, we stayed away from Arillas for four years. Big mistake for us. Four years wasted....

These days she gets a couple of bites when the guard is down, but she claims she would rather suffer that than miss being in Arillas. Do you believe her? Silly question. It was she who dragged me back, "kicking and screaming" to Arillas. (My reply? No way! Mozzie Heaven, you'll be mullered, we're not going....)

That was 2007. She won of course. Isn't that what wives do?? The rest is history and all documented on this forum....

Like our kevin.g, I never get bitten. I could walk naked all around the village at night and never get bitten. I'd get arrested though...

Whoopee! The new season in Arillas is almost started. Like our Jo said, when the mozzie posts start the season is almost here....

happy holidays folks
Phil

Joan luvver I think you are right. Perfume seems to attract the little b*****s. Men much prefer the natural scent of a woman to all the No 5's, Coty L'Aimants etc. So risk the fire - leave the perfume off and watch him respond! At least if it doesn't happen, you'll have less mosquito bites!

(PS - Jen brings perfume to Arillas to avoid that scenario.... She never wears it though!)

Have to inform you all that i never got one bite this time. I'm overjoyed. Whats the secret? No idea but i went armed with all sorts of lotions and potions. Dont know which was responsible so from now on i'm taking the lot.
I started taking vitamin B100 tablets the week before(holland and barrets). I had deet free mosquito sprays (camping shop and marks and spencer), lavendar oil, lavendar sticks. a lavendar plug in and my antibiotic cream incase a one did get me.

Helen and I have had a lovely day at Gardeners World Live and the Summer Good Food Shows at the NEC in Birmingham.

One of the exhibitors there was this company "Incognito" ( http://www.lessmosquito.com/ ) We had a long chat to them about mosquito bites and they convinced us to try their products - the soap, After sun and the mosquito repellent.

I asked, tongue in cheek if, I could have a refund if I was bit in Arillas and they  gave me their word that they would.  Since getting home I have checked the products out on the internet, and also looked at reviews for the products which seem very positive.

Has anyone heard of, or tried these products? I suppose the proof of the pudding will be to see if we get bitten in September.

On a different note, I tried Crabbie’s Original Alcoholic Ginger Beer  served over ice with a slice of lemon and it was delicious. I have never tried it before but it was a lovely refreshing summers drink. Even Helen liked it and she doesn't drink much alcohol.

tracys - the only real answer is DEET. Boots Jungle Formula is 50% DEET and has worked for Jen, the only thing that ever has. Our Erja posted the same earlier today. Some object to the chemical treatments, but I really believe that none of the others really work. Jen has 17 scars on her legs from bites that were lanced by the doctor in Arillas in 2002. We nearly gave up on Corfu altogether.

But she has it sussed - Jungle formula and cover up after dark.

Hope you get it sussed too.

We tried some new "stuff" this year, that we saw at Gardeners World Live. It was called Incognito and we didn't get bitten at all. Now, it could be that not many mozzies were about so it needs to be tried again next July.

I used the soap on my arms and legs when having a shower, then put the aftersun on arms and legs followed by the spray. The theory is that the three levels, soap, aftersun and spray build up resistance levels.

We were told that we could have a refund if we were bitten.

If you DO get bitten, the best thing I found was this:
BITE THERAPY ( Rona Ross' treatment)
It's the size of a lipstick, with a roll on, and doesn't smell too nasty.
You can get it at Alex' supermarket on the corner next to Marina.

Last night I realized I had posted a wrong quote, sorry folks
I must be getting a bit senile, so here's a correction:

"If you think you are too small to make a difference you have
never gone to bed with a mosquito"

It was on the thread "Corfu 2010" with the funny drawing, posted by Eileen.
just watch that drawing and have a laugh!!

This year I took Claratin tablets two weeks before going to Arillas and had some expensive repellent as well ( the wife says I am a am an expensive repellent so she does not need to take anything else )
Anyway I was bitten almost to death.
So I actually purchased a Mosquito net on Ebay for next June.
You  will know who I am as I will be wearing a mosquito net in the evenings.

I wonder if anyone will notice the hammer, nails and ladder in my luggage.
