8) Interestingly after a few days of Greek food with lots of olive oil and garlic the mozzies don't bother me.
Ivan
PS I wonder why?????
-
my husband smothers himself in Bens repellent,I think thats the name.I use nothing and touch wood haven't been eaten alive. There'e always a first time though.
-
I always use the Autan roll on - mind you the local stuff from the supermarket is pretty good - also Avon do an aftersun that has an insect repllent in it which is good to use as well as the autan.

Last year in Arillas my brother in law covered himself in the lemon that came with his evening meal,we all thought he'd lost the plot, maybe he had.But he was the only one who came from Arillas without a bite!!cx
-
lol i would have though lemon would have attracted them?! Might try that though as I always get bitten loads the first week. I have a tiny bottle of insect repellant call Scram which i got last year of ebay.Thats great for treating bites but can't seem to find anymore.Anyone know where i can buy it?
-
Anything with Deet in it does the trick for us. Bought Boots 50% Deet repellent to try this year.
Whatever you use, some Mozzies are bound to get you though !!!
-
Sue,
There are so many products on the market it's mind boggling.
The mosquitos don't bother me much, or at least I should say I don't react to their bite, which is where the problem arises. Last year my sister-in-law reacted very badly to the bites which then became infected. The doctor in Arillas prescribed anti-histamines and said that the allergy would decrease each year...a great excuse to return!
I don't have any favourite repellent, but usually take something containing Deet. This year for a change I have bought a couple herbal sprays and roll-ons for my family and the Avon aftersun with repellent in it. I've also bought Mosi-Bands from Morrisons, they are stretchy bands for wrist or ankles (not too sure about that unless under trousers!) containing 30% Deet/3.5% Citronella and last for 14 days if worn for 7hrs at a time. They have been recommended by friends, who say they have also seen them fastened to baby buggys. I'm going to fasten them to my grandsons buggy as even although the instructions say they are safe for children over 6 mths I would never dream of putting Deet on a young child.
Happy mozzie and bite free holidays to everyone.

I always use autan spray, and I find that it's the best stuff for me. However, I always take garlic tablets before and during my trip, which are supposed to deter mozzies, so I;m not sure which is actually the one that works! :? I havent had so many bites in the last few years, so maybe Eileens right, and you become more immune in time? 8) maggie
-
On a lighter note - mozzies are supposed to be attracted to sexually active people !!!
So you know what NOT to do to help avoid getting bitten !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the other hand, you might just have to put up with the bites
-
 So no sniggering and pointing if you see anyone with lots of bites!!!!!!!

On a lighter note - mozzies are supposed to be attracted to sexually active people !!!
That's an interesting phrase isn't it - sexually active. Does that mean that you're doing it lots, or would it work if you just wished you were doing it lots but didn't have the opportunity?!
I find the only time I get bothered by mozzies is under the table at the taverna - i.e. they fly under the table and get my ankles as opposed to me being under the table. Mind you...
I now smother my ankles with whatever spray the missus has packed (she is very susceptible to bites - does that mean I am sexually active but she isn't - ooh err! :? ) and it works a treat.

I now understand why I'm covered from head to toe with those bites!!!!

Sexually active eh! - Now I understand why I get more bites than a fisherman in a mackeral shoal.
-
Hi all
Very interesting !! at least you will know whens the best time?its when your partner gets a few Mozzie bites, it makes getting bitten not so bad now !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And Mozzies only like the bald bits, thats the bottom of the legs and of course the head !!!!!!!!!!!

Hi
I realise this is an old topic but I am always glad to pass this tip on. I highly recomend the Avon Suntan range with added insect repellent. It really is effective. The year my husband and I discovered how good it is, we were in Cephalonia and we had taken some of that and some other suntan stuff and we soon noticed that when we did not have the Avon insect repellent suntan lotion or aftersun on, the midges were all around us, but when we had it on we didn't get any.
So last time we just took that. They do it in sunfactor 30 and 12 and in an aftersun, and I wouldn't dream of using anything else.
In fact, Avon do other ranges of Suntan lotion, without the added insect repellent, and I can't understand why!!!
I recently ordered mine online at:
http://www.avonshop.co.uk/catalog.asp?cat=2047&mnu=2047
Happy hols everyone.

Hi, Claire,
I've heard that the Avon suncream range with insect repellant is very good, so it was good to read your review and hopefully my aftersun is not a waste of money. :D The wee blighters hardly seem to bother me, but it will come in useful for my family.
I should imagine the suncream with repellant would only be worthwhile if out walking in the countryside, can't say I've noticed any bothersome flies during the daylight hours.
happy hols to you too, it won't be long. :D

A friend of mine always takes a pot of Marmite........(consumption only)
Just one slice of toast or a sandwich a day keeps the little blighters away from her (and she tells me shes got sweet skin haha)
Will try it myself in September, anythings worth a try :?

Yum, have just put Marmite on my holiday shopping list. Marmite soldiers for breakfast methinks. I never keep Marmite in, but I fancy some now!
What with that and the Avon sun lotion it'll be a bit of a belt and braces exercise!
Claire x
PS While I'm at it, Avon's nail varnish remover is the best I've ever tried. And before you wonder, no I don't have shares in Avon!
-
I have to agree, Avons insect repellent is the best - I have a stach of it ready for the holiday - I have never heard of the Marmite theory, but being a Marmite baby and never travelling without it I shall try it - also if you look at some of the previous recommendations on this subject apparently the sexually active never get bitten - so girls you know what to do!!!!!

I was tempted to put down the heel of my sandles  ,but i use a natural mossie repelant i bought in Boots cannot remember the name though, but it is good for kids also and protects for 10 hrs,and is made in Leeds.I have not been biten for about 15 years but i do use a lot of mossie repelant and the tablets i use 2 a night in the electric plug in thingy, but we do have the window open.
-
The tip about Marmite is not a silly as it might sound to some. Brewer's Yeast tablets have a similar effect, but you need to be taking them for a while before you go as well as while you're there.
Apparently it's something to do with B vitamins which deter the mozzies and B vitamins are also found in Marmite.

I use Crocodile (Deet free). Its a roll on and smells pretty good too. Apparently men that fish use it.
-
Where can you buy Crocodile from?
Tracey
-
Crocodile, not too sure :? . You can 'google' it, try: crocodile deet free, and Im sure you can get it through the net or there will be suppliers who stock it. Sorry, it was a gift. Hope you get something ... the little blighters love a good feed don't they? I think if you have tasty blood they will get you (they get me  ), but sometimes the products you wear make it less painful and unsightly!
-
I bought some earlier on this year, being deet free it is ideal for my grandson. I'll check later on to see what website I bought it from.

-
Found it!
I ordered mine from here http://www.natural-woman.com/p_crocodile.htm
I also bought their Aloe Vera Gel, it has a high 97% Aloe Vera content, so it should be lovely and soothing on any redness after a day in the sun. :D

Hi everyone
Just returned from two wonderful weeks in Arillas with no mozzie bites. I did have a couple of bites from something that appeared as red lumps, but the skin around them was totally "numbed", presumably by the injected poison, and they didn't even itch. :) :D
I had taken a pot of Marmite - I had missed the recommendation on here, but I don't like the jam provided in the hotel - and I guess it must have worked. There were mozzies in plenty and many other people in the hotel got bitten (some very badly), but I escaped. Needless to say the Marmite was very popular amongst the other guests as they had heard of its merits. A bigger pot required next time I think! :)
I have also heard Vitamin B1 does the trick - is this Brewer's Yeast?
We are going again in August and all the locals have told us that there are no mozzies around then. We certainly found this to be true in September last year - never saw one anywhere!

Hi fiona. We came back from Arillas fri just gone.I didn't get bitten and I also take a pot of marmite with me.We are also going back in August, when do you go?
-
Hi all,
Thanks for those comments we will defiantly be taking the pot of Marmite,or can it be any type of beef extract ??
Paul/Deb5
-
I usually get bitten but this year i bought boots soltan aftersun with insect repellent in I used it and also my youngest daughter who is 10 and also as an extra precaution sprayed superdrug extra strength buzz off - No bites. Altho I have also heard eating garlic helps which is no hardship. :D
-
Hi Paul/Deb5
I think you might be getting Marmite confused with Bovril - same shaped jar, completely different contents. Marmite is vegetarian - someone once told me that it is scraped off the bottom of beer vats as a left over from the brewing process, but I don't suppose that is true!
Anyway, I am one of those people who would jump into "The blob" rather than run from it as I love the stuff.
Pete
-
Hi Pete
It's definitely Marmite as that is the stuff that has B Vitamins in it. As Brewer's Yeast also works, I guess what you say about the brewing industry is correct!
I've just looked at the Bovril jar in the cupboard and that has Vit B12, but I've been told Vit B1 is the magic one!!
I love them both and the Marmite is just great with real butter on Greek toast :D
Fiona

Hi Pete
Thanks for that I never new that Marmite was vegetarian, I just like the stuff and now you tell me its origin is alcolhol, even better!!!!!!!!!!

Good question. I used to get bitten badly then I read an article that Skin-So-Soft Dry Oil Bodyspray (Woodland Fresh) used after showering will act as a repellent. It does. Used ever since, no probs and recommended to many others who have found it works too. PS I don't work for Avon!!! My sister in law swears by lavender and uses a spray and stick and Spiros at Bardis Studios says always use liquid plug in room, not tablets, and use liquid Autan with lemon, not a spray. So there you have it, bet you didn't think anyone could have as much to say on the subject. Hope it helps. :D
-
Hi Wendy & Stuart
So many different remedies I'll have to take a seperate case to put all the varietys in !! But seriously though we have found it cheaper to buy some of the plug ins and sprays when we are out there and its what the locals use.
Paul/Deb5
-
We always use the plug ins and spray the room liberally before going out.Seems to work for us.
-
Boots do an excellent (own brand) after sun / insect repellant - it really works guys... (thanks Lynne) !! - we will be buying some before we go back in September
Bought some crocodile stuff but my missus says it smells vile.
