Title: mosquitos
Post by: tonynglenda on May 12, 2009, 10:28:12 AM
Morning all. Does anyone have any recommendations for deet free mosquito repellant? I used to use one called 'deet free' but it has been discontinued. I've looked on the site and there are some others but i wondered if any are proven. I am allergic to deet which is in most of the usual ones, even a small % is no good to me. I carry bottles of lavendar, citronella, and eucalyptis but i need a spray as well. If you see me i smell like an aromatherapy shop, honest! But when you have such a bad reaction you try everything. It has cost a fortune in medical bills around the world. I even carry antibiotic cream because its 30€[yippee it works €] for a tube at the local docs. I need a big handbag as well! Any advice wecome, thanks. Glenda

Hi, try mosiguard, i am sure it comes as a spray as well as a roll-on & cream. It smells lovely & is recommended by masta the travel health people. You can get it in superdrug & other chemists & on-line.

I'm told the Army use Avon Skin-So-Soft for that very reason.  The result? We have highly-trained killers with complexions like babies' bums!!!

Michelle was attacked by a platoon of the most agressive mozzies ever seen on corfu. She looked like a horror movie. went to the Arillas Doctor. The good man didn't waste any time, told Michelle she needs treatment, took a needle, put it in Michelle's bottom, wrote a bill, and by the time he charged our Mastercard michelle looked like the cutie I know again.
The anti-bodies the doctor injected still seem to work, one way or the other. It's almost three years ago now. Had no problems ever since.

So forget about deet, won't help, visit the doctor and ask for a shot.

I had an email today about "bounce" tumble drier sheets... they apparently ward off mozzies and golfers put them in their pockets to ward off bees.

Anything's worth a try... a couple of sheets of bounce tucked into your undies might just do the trick!

I trust and recommend the Jungle Formula spray. It is a bit pricey, but no bites :)

I did get one last August because I had none on,  but it was actually Phil and Jen's fault because we got stuck in Thalassa one afternoon in the shade with lashings of beverages, which was nice  ;)

We also swear by this. I think we've probably got the whole range - spray, roll-on, cream. lotion, gel, milk - all good!!

BG
I'm not sure if I need extra bounce in my undies!

Mozzies , so far, don't seem to be around and at the moment wasps are few and far between. I still think the Superdrug "Buzz Off" is a good one to have.
( Works for us anyway, and not a bad price )

Mike  use SSS, bottles of it!... he doesnt mind the smell and he uses it all the time, you do need to stand on a towel or go outside when you do it though as it sprays over the floor and gets slippery on the marble floors.
Title: Re: mosquitos
Post by: justlynn on May 19, 2009, 12:49:38 PM
Yes, I use the SSS (Soft and Fresh) too, and found it pretty good, along with other sprays as well.
We also found Eggy's Superdrug recommendation "Buzz off" very effective, but we had to spray this on outside as well, not so much because it was slippery on the marble floors, more that the fumes choked us!  (Not sure that anyone else wanted to get too close either!)  No, seriously, it didn't remain that strong.....

It seems that we wont have to worry about mozzies in Cornwall this year... just read an article about a venomous form of black widow spider that has come off the banana boats and is spending the summer in Cornwall!  Any remedies for that?  I hate spiders in any form let alone the black widow variety... this women got bitten in bed by one!

Just typica! we go somewhere else and have something else to worry about!  I would rahter have the mozzies

If you should see a "black widow" wave a pasty at him, that should scare him away.   Especially ones of those awful excuses for pasties that are made by a company that begins with a "G"

I know it's not the same as Arillas, but if you haven't been to Cornwall before, there are some lovely beaches to enjoy, several secluded ones if you know where to go - unfortunately you can't guarantee the weather.

Hope you have a lovely holiday even if it's not Arillas.

I have tried various treatments for Mozi bites.
I always spray myself with jungle formula but this year I have been told to take antihistamine tablets about two  weeks before going.
It will not stop you being bitten but you will not be so badly affected by the bites !. That’s the theory and I have been on the stuff for a week now. Just one more week to go and we will see.
I will report back on my return.  Yamass

We tried Repel 55 at christmas in Thailand and didn't get one bite, though some people in our hotel suffered badly.
So I am taking it to try in Arillas this year and hoping for the same results, though I must add it's no good for anyone trying to avoid Deet

Hi all!
Just got back from my 'May' trip to Arillas. Must admit I got well bitten at first, despite my liberal application on 'Jungle Strength" mozzie lotion. Seems to happen in the evenings when out for a meal. I just covered up, wearing socks and shoes, long trousers, and concentrated my attention to my bare arms, and face. That seemed to stop the b***ers!

Had a tip today.... Listerine is supposed to be good... put it into a small spray bottle and they hate it.. spray it everywhere in your room... We also use lemongrass/citrus incense sticks at home and away, seems to work

I always get bitten quite bad, especially in the first week. So if anyone wants to hire me as the decoy Mozzie blood bank my rates are very reasonable. I'd rather be bitten and in Arillas than not be there at all. :-)

MARMITE

i dont mean rubbing it over your body !!

it loads of it before you fly out then keep eating it when your out there on your toast.
it will seep through your pours.
the mosies will either love ya or hate ya

Hi All,
Marmite is yeast extract based so it should work. A friend of mine takes yeast tablets two weeks before traveling and every day whilst abroad and he swears by them. Never seen any bites on him.

Post by: KarenL on June 09, 2009, 08:48:50 PM
We got back yesterday, and the mossies seemed far, far worse than we have previously experienced (usually in Sept & Oct).

I don't usually get bitten as much as my husband - but I reckon even I ended up with over 50 on my face, as well as another 20/30 elsewhere.  I'm a regular Marmite eater - so blow that theory out of the water.  I think my face was the target as the only bit not covered by bed clothes - well, I've got to breathe sometime!  Overnight is when we got "done": we can't be the only people who find it too warm to leave the shutters closed all night?

We've tried citronella-based repellents, but they seem to wear off quite quickly ... and I'm a bit reluctant to use anything too "chemically" in case I'm allergic to it ... I have a tendency to such things ...

Hi KarenL

in 2003 Jen got so badly bitten it stopped us going to Arillas for 4 years. She had 17 one-inch wide blisters lanced on her legs by the local doctor.

If it's any use, we diagonosed that night time was not the main culprit. The worst is early evening, as the sun goes down, and you sit eating in the gorgeous fragrant atmosphere. Just about anywhere. But 50 bites on your face? They usually go for legs and feet, with only a few elsewhere.

Seems quite likely they happened to you in the night (you don't usually know at the time - they inject anaesthetic and you find out later...) because you would have noticed them on your face unless you were asleep.

Have you tried mossie-nets? We did once but what a palava. You need to stay where there are mossie screens over the doors. Or with aircon and keep the place shut. Have you always used the plug-in repellant? They do work.

Jen's solution is to wear pop-sox and floaty trousers, and spray feet and legs up to knees and any other exposed skin with Jungle Formula (50% DEET) before the sun sets. She has only had half a dozen bites in 8 weeks in Arillas since.

Best wishes
Phil

Marmite works, we ate it every day, even took it down for breakfast,  took Vit B tablets before and during holiday.

My friend is in Corfu now... they buy a newspaper every day, take a roll of sellotape with them and tape up the newspaper at the shutters everynight... I cant be bothered with that, we just pull the curtains, use the plugs in but leave the shutters closed so they can escape... the locals told me the plugs are a deterrent, they dont kill them so they need to leave the room somehow. We have only had an occasional mozzie in the room.

Had to tell you all, we came back on friday and i've only had one bite the whole holiday! Cant believe it. Either the little buggers have gone off me or my new spray worked. i got it from an outdoor camping shop, called natural essentials or something like that, its in a silver metal tin. Deet free cos as ive said before i'm allergic to deet. Also i 'blessed' our beds every nigt with lavender oil. They dont like that either. Whatever it was it worked, halleluyah!

Well, we have used Skin So Soft, Boots Jungle Formula (50% Deet), sprayed the room before going out in the evenings, drank beer and still have lots of bites each!!

Always seems to be when out in the evenings.  Colin reckons they only targeted the areas that he sprayed (his legs).

Have now progressed to Autan spray, which seems to be working better.  That'll teach me to forget the Superdrug Buzz Off..............

I've found the only thing that works is a formula either in gel or cream that contain 50% deet, as Sprays evaporate ( well that's what I was told by a doctor ) as  3 years ago I got so badly bitten, I had to have a daily injection  and antibiotics. Ever since then I still get bitten but  only a couple. and once bitten dab one of those after bite with amonia in and they stop them from blebbing up, constantly dab them until the itch stops. Cover up at night as much as you can. Personally I think there is nothing that will totally prevent them. Lynn and Colin hope you get no more bites from the little blood suckers!
Enjoy the rest of your hols which I'm sure you are reading your amazing verses

Mary luvver, Jen so agrees. Moi? Me? Phil?  I've never had a bite in all the years I've been to Arillas. I can sleep naked on the beach and never get bitten (no photographic evidence but I have done it.)

If I knew why they avoid me I would bottle it and be a millionaire. But truth is I don't know why. We used to think they hated men, but saw magazine coverboys with feet covered in blisters, dark skinned men with too much testosterone to talk about, fair skin, dark skin, yellow skin, any skin. Fair skinned women seem to get mullered. My Jen does too.

Like the AIDS stuff, I would be willing to be the guinea pig to find out why. I can tell you now it isn't garlic, drink or tobacco. Marmite is also not the answer forum luvver who posted about that. I HATE it.

All I can say is I have never been bitten by a mosquito in Arillas so far. I might be eating my words after July, but if not I am a willing guinea pig for the medics to find out why.

Phil

Yes , Phil it's just one of those mysteries mozzies have no preference and affects locals and tourists alike, or avoid them I think it's partly down to luck or bad luck . The taxi driver who took me to the airport in May had had a bad reaction and he  had just been to the pharmacy to pick up his prescription for his bites - He said it's a hazard of being a taxi driver they just fly in  and as it was too hot he couldn't bare to travel without the windows being opened - Let's hope in July  they still avoid you. But your Jen and I  I'm sure will keep covering up the parts the little blighters like so  much. I now understand the sandal and sock look - I ended up embracing that look myself this year!! Next time I will  make sure I have matching socks ha ha!

Happy Hols

I'm wondering if you can become immune to the ole mozzies when you live here.

We've had no trouble with them yet and I've heard very few buzzing around.
Don't often use the "buzz off" spray now and only as a token gesture around the face n hands if we go out in the evening. ( And only then if I remember )

Maybe the ouzo in the pores keeps them away!
That's the answer then! - Live on marmite sarnies washed down with Ouzo.

Glenny - Really sorry to have missed you this year.
Can't understand why
I must have sent, at least, 30 of my flying friends around with a message to meet y'all for a drink. But I know they do get side tracked a little. And... only 3 of em came back.
I'm told that 10 ended up as wall furniture, 8 finished up stuck to shoes, 6 were caught in mid air by some sort of gaseous spray and 3 are M.B.S. ( Missing Believed Swatted )

Hope your hol was a goodie. Try "buzz off" next time.

Don't forget I'm still looking after your false teeth which you forgot to pack last year.
( Well. only the bottom set, I'm afraid - Wegg used the top set to make the crust around some home made pasties )

Now, Mozzies - Graham and Julie very sadly leave for the UK this evening. I wish I could have spent much more time with them and their month went sooo faaaast.
Anyway, Julie left me with some Buzz Off extra strength mozzie spray

Anyone else have a problem with this product?

Last year Di used Mosquit - ex which was recomended on this forum, now Di suffers badly from mosquito bites and seems to be the local target for the little b*****s, but last year only two bites all fortnight. But the only place we found it after serching all over was at the airport on the way out(Bristol). It certainly worked for her (and me).

Hi Paul
I too find Mosquit - ex  the best but there are only certain places that sell it I looked it up on their website and it said in the UK it's only airports and Superdrug that sells it, hence why in May I got  the Boots version,I looked up the ingrediants and they were the same, 50 % deet and some others I can't pronounce. I think with Mosquit - ex  the more you put it on it builds up a resistance, I put it on the day I fly and a week before stop wearing my beloved perfumes, but that's a very small sacrifice for  not getting bitten.
Take Care

My first week started off ok. Then all of a sudden my right leg resembled the French Alps. I used mozi wipe to treat the bites. I did not realise it had an aesthetic in it until I accidentally wiped my mouth with the swab.
Had wubber  lipths for a couple of hours.
Worked though. Stopped me irritating the bites so  No pain.

I also have a zapper you put over the bite and press a button and a spark jumps across the bite.
Does not work but it brings alive the masochist in me.

Not sure if the Zapper will work on children.

When I find out what a “Child Board” is, that might do the trick.
You either strap them to it or hit them with it ( not that I would do such a thing )

Jan reckons I look worse now then i did in Pefkos in May. Bytheway sat outside at 21.48 with a large glass of Merlot enjoying the lovely evening and surfing the old interweb. Only 10 weeks and 4 days before we hit Arillas.

I dont normally have a problem here in the Uk but come to think of it what I thought were spots were probably bites from sitting in the garden at night.  Will have to get the holiday kit out and spray it about a bit.

Barry - VERY good!!

Do you hire yourself out to visitng Tourists??!!

There is another way to reduce mozies - it's not exactly to everybodies cup of tea but DOES work - if you use a little of your own urine on your skin they don't like it - ureaic acid therein is somthing the buggers don't like, but as I say - not to everyones taste.....(!!!!)

Or... If you are a bit shy then give me a call. I have to charge a call out as I  probably wouldn't reach from Kavaddades. ( Trying to allow for the hills etc ! - Angles n all that! )

This hottie weather seems to have increased the Mozzie tribe a twinge and even me, who thought I was a twinge immune, had two bites yesterday. So be prepared all you new guests. ( Small price to pay though for a good time - must take some precautions )

These new mosquito posts have just reminded me that I need to thank MaryH for her suggestion to use rub on repellent instead of spray on.

Quote
I've found the only thing that works is a formula either in gel or cream that contain 50% deet, as Sprays evaporate ( well that's what I was told by a doctor )

We found it really worked this year. We used Jungle Formula Extra Strength and it did seem to work as we didn't have many bites.

The rub on seemed to create a film on the skin whereas the spray on seemed to disappear after a few hours. When we were bitten, the Jungle Formula Bite and Sting Relief spray was the best we had ever used to alleviate the the irritation.

Next time I am in Arillas, I will make sure I use a "wee" bit more to feel extra safe :-)
Title: Re: mosquitos
Post by: MaryH on August 05, 2009, 11:18:49 AM
Thanks Terry
Yes I really do think the rub on repellants work better as I used to get horrendous bites but now I still get them but very few. The advise I was given about the rub on repellants was from a doctor in San Stefanos.

Hi!
Anyone know what the mozzie population is like in October? I got well munched in May despite my Jungle Formula till Mary recommended a rub on deterrent! Mostly feet and ankles and at night, but also forehead and neck! Deet (think that's how it's spelled) seemed to discourage the little b*****s!
Yammas,
Martin.
Title: Re: mosquitos
Post by: justphil on August 05, 2009, 02:21:35 PM
Hi Martin. Jen finds that 50% DEET is the only answer. She uses the spray these days, and always keeps feet and ankles covered in the evenings when out eating etc. In our last eight weeks in Arillas she has only been bitten about six times, usually when defences were down. She swears by Boots Jungle Formula, and it has really helped her.

They never touch me...

Have a great time in October - sounds like  you'll meet up with JohnTheRef and riggers. What a trio! Wish I could make it four...

Phil

Course they do Phil. You have created a new strain of mozzie here.
It's called the "Black Russian Sucker" and can be easily recognised by the failure to fly in a straight line. This strain are resilient little pests and eagerly await the return of you and Jen.
( As we all do matey! )

Stay Well
Negg

Getting back to the usual Mozzie. - I'm sure we must build up a resistance to them, living here. I've had a couple of bites and although I get the little "bump" and a few seconds of itching , within 30 mins or so. it ceases to become a problem.
But I do spray the "Superdrug Hi=Strength Buzz off" when working outside during the day.

I tried Avon's Skin So Soft after someone recommended it to me ,I must say I was a wee bit skeptical but in the two weeks we were in Arillas at the beginning of July, I only had two small bites.
So this gets my vote for now :)

stay safe

Hi Phil
Like your Jen I now use Boots Jungle Formula with 50% deet, as I find the mosquit-ex a bit hard to find shops that sell it but I think I'm a bit obsessive I went on their website and noted down the ingrediants and the Boots one has almost identical ones, especially the main one Deet.
Martin years ago I went to Kavos  the last week in October and although the rep said beware the mozzies are still about, neither me  or my friend Gail got bit once and we never used any repellents. Saying that though I would still use  a reppellant.

Our son in law owns a company that specialises in producing fly pheromones (hope I've spelled it correctly!)  It's something to do with attracting (or detracting?) flies...
Even HE gets bitten when they go abroad...
We always have a jungle formula plug in in our room, although I didn't know that it didn't kill the mozzies and I've used their wipes on an evening.  I'm usually the one that gets bitten badly, but this May it was Barry who suffered more.  I like Mary's idea of the rub on rather than repellant spray - makes more sense
Title: Re: mosquitos
Post by: MaryH on August 07, 2009, 10:27:04 AM
Hi Janis
I think with the rub on repellants, especially the creams, the more you put them on they seem to sink in each day and build you up a resistance well that's my theory. I now always start putting it on the day I fly in the UK. See Arillas is brilliant, even though  one of the things Corfu is famous for is it's mosquitoes,  it doesn't stop us from coming back.

well after 12 years and smugly thinking we have immmunity from the little buggers, and despite taking Vit B, lathering ourselves in Jungle formula, Autan, Skin so soft, liquid plug ins, we got ravaged this year as did most of my friends and family.  The wird thing is, Harry didnt get a single one! Jen too. She must smell so sweet to them - the wasps just come and hassle her at every opportunity. In Kaloudis there was a notice "Please don't squash the wasps on the windows" but Jen was given a fly-swatter, and permission to break the rules. Many flattened wasps followed...

In Graziella they use some sort of smoke bombs to keep them at bay.

riggers mate, they won't keep you away any more than they would me. You will enjoy October whatever it brings. Have at least one for me...

Ah yes Phil can you remember when we all sat and had a drink in the Rainbow and  me and your Jen were doing the wasp dance, because they were just making a bee line for the two of us. One time when having breakfast at Grazella there was a great big swarm of them and Thomas and his Dad surrounde me with these smoke bombs, and they all just flew away as quickly as they came. I was told in May, by a lady it is Greek coffee granuals they light.

best thing i have found for mozzies is a cirtus stick

Wot do you do Craig? - Just hit them on the head with it or is it something technical I can't deal with.

Now, waspies . I've said before and will say again that the Greek wasp is very laid back.
It will sting you if, when it appears the "victim" does a ceremonial war dance or attempts to create his/her variation of "break dancing"
That will startle them and would even frighten me! (Unless I knew the music you were dancing to)

But, and it works for us, a very nochalent flick of the hand or blow at it and off it goes for new pastures <<<< Serious bit this folks!

Anyway, follow this simple procedure:-
3 nonchalent flicks and then swat the bugger if he still comes back.
( You can even get a stubborn Greek wasp - donchyerknow? )

Mozzies have been known to queue up during the day and select the victim on a shiftwork basis. Don't be fooled into thinking the repelant is for evenings only.
Splash it on, if you're walking through the undergrowth or having a lunchtime meal.

Wegg and me get a few bites, during the day when we're sorting the garden out.

Take no prisoners and if buzzed, even by a curious one, then remove him from the equation. ( His/her fault for being curious - Curiosity killed cat n all that )

Now, Riggers! - He will be bitten 10 times for every game of darts that he wins when playing yours truly. I have trained a select group of SAS mozzies who follow my orders to the letter. This is why I very rarely lose games now. The odd few players that beat me never get replays as they are laid up in a hospital bed somewhere with more bumps than you can see on the moon,

Hope this helps
Happy Darting Riggers
Negg

Neill, you just had Phil and Jen laughing their underwear off. Except we don't do underwear... How many ouzos did that take? So glad you got home in one piece. You won't with our riggers in October though. Just get a taxi.

riggers mate you are the only one who ever got me legless in Arillas. Jen agrees. This July I upset Tania at the doctors, but stayed upright the whole time. "Does he ever stop talking?" said he, but the doctor shared a high five with me the next day in Brouklis. He was just making sure his bill would get paid. I quite fancied Tania though, I love a stern confident woman... and she did give me such a lovely smile.

Ah Arillas. Leave me alone. Stop feeding my obsession. Well tough dears, I am out of the closet. I adore everything Arillas throws at me. And I am not alone....
