Title: Mary's anticipated May hols
Post by: MaryH on March 12, 2009, 02:09:16 AM
Providing I can get the time off work in May - I will be going solo in Arillas - watching Terry's videos  has made me home sick! I am determined to learn Greek and this is the best way to do in our favourite Greek village of course

Take care

Mary,

I can't find the report that Phil did with you last year. I reckon just reading that again would increase your determination to get there.

What's your boss's email address, maybe we could could all help :-)

Hi Mary,
Good for you! I'm at The Bardis Sun Hotel from May 8th. to 22nd. I'm sure that once you get that flight booked, accommodation will be no problem that time of the year.
All the best,
Martin.

Hi Martin
That's what I thought as it was easy last year even though I had a last minute drastic change of plan and didn't end up staying at Bardis as I didn't think she'd got my letter. I'm thinking of contacting Dorita again because her hotel sounds like the perfect set up for a solo visitor. I love Arillas in May , well any time but it's a good kick start to Summer a holiday in heavan. I plan to do plenty of walking and have invested in a proper pair of walking shoes. I'm going to sort my flight out as soon as possible, well I have to wait for my boss to come back to work on Monday so I can make sure I can book the time off.

Hi Mary!
I hope your boss gives you the 'all clear'. I am sure Dorita will still have vacancies for May. The accommodation is great and she does fantastic breakfasts. She really looks after you. I like it there because it's near everything but quiet if you want that. There's always Poppy's at the B.S. Studios next door for a late drink and a chat with all the guests there if you want it too. There are quite a few of the 'May bunch' to meet and get to know.
Yammas,
Martin.

flight booked I arrive in Corfu on 11th May and have just rang Dorita, and spoke to Aris and got the room and taxi sorted, what concerns me a bit is he didn't ask for my name I had to prompt him but he did say don't worry and asked for my flight number. I can't wait. It's going to be a little scary ,but the adventure I've been dreaming of for the past year!! I thought what the heck next year I may not have  job.

Good for you Mary. Always exciting when you get booked and can start the countdown! I have never gone solo to Arillas, but think I would feel completely comfortable doing so, such a friendly warm safe place.
Just know that you will have a wonderful time, and enjoy Doritas wonderful egg on toast for brekkie! xx

Great news Mary! We will meet at last. As you know I have done the 'solo' trip and believe me it's a doddle. Once you get on the plane you will find all your worries will disappear!
Don't worry about the B.S. Hotel booking 'system'. It's always a bit vague. The taxi driver, normally Stamatis from the local cab company will be there with a large piece of card with 'ARIS, BARDIS SUN' on it. He will take your bags to the taxi and get you to Arillas in about an hour with a guided commentary on the way!
Not long to wait now,
All the best,
Martin.

Good for you Mary!  I am sure all will be ok.  We thought it was all a bit vague too but it turned out perfectly.  We arrived late evening and there was no problem with the taxi transfer... the driver knew the room we were in, let us in and we "were on holiday"!!!  We went straight down to the Marina for a drink, no unpacking as we felt at home already.. we didnt see Dorita until breakfast and she was great... we wanted to pay her straight away but she wasnt  fussed at all although we did go straight to get our money exchanged to be able to do so... I hate being there and not paying for our accommodation right away.

I shall be thinking of you all staying there this year, its such a quiet and friendly place to stay, I would feel very safe staying there on my own.    Have a great time  xxx

Hi Blondegirl!
Last year I had the same trouble with Dorita. She didn't take my money until late in the second week and that was only because I insisted. She really is such a lovely person, nothing seems to worry her or nothing is too much trouble. I seemed to get 'adopted' by the whole family. That's typical hospitality of those welcoming people of Arillas!

Sue you've put my mind at rest about the vagueness of the booking one thing I didn't ask and will have to is the price I know last time when I ended up not staying  there, but it will definately happen  this time - Dorita quoted me a price.over the phone. I will ring nearer the time

Martin
yes at last we will  meet. Lst time I did fly out on my own and I found it less stressfull than having someone with me mind there was a very stressed party of 17 in front of me in the queue who had got all their passports mixed up when  you are on  your own, you can just sail through check in.

PPMMAN me the new Shirley Valentine - I like the sound of that

We left Mikes "walking pole" (it was a broom handle) by the gate at the back of restaurant just by the telegraph pole... it came in very handy as we left his "posh" one at home.  It might still be there!  Would be funny if it was.

Last year Mike and I were quoted 100 euros each per week, she might prefer sterling this year.

Hi Mary,
Just wondering what time your flight arrives on 11th. May. A friend of mine, Dennis gets in from Manchester at 12.30 on that day and is looking for a taxi share. He is on his own and traveling with Nancy's company, Corfu Escape. He says that you are more than welcome to share his transport if you want. Just a thought.
Yammas,
Martin.

Hi Martin
My flight arrives at 13.00. That's very kind of Dennis to share his transport with me, but it would mean him waiting around for me, so I wouldn't want to put him out. But if the offer is still there yes please. I could ring Dorita and say I don't need a taxi from the airport. It would make sense though two people sharing. Is Dennis staying at Bardis?

Hi Lynn
I think I  had heard Dennis was a bit of a charachter so should be an entertaining journey from the airport to Arillas  and  come to think of it it's probably best if he shares my taxi if he doesn't mind waiting half an hour so I will be prepared to be entertained!!

It was lovely to meet Dennis again last year.   He helps out a bit on the boats from San Stef doesnt he, he loves the sea and going to the islands.  He is often seen poodling around on his moped during his stay.  Cant believe its come around again when he is there again.  He is a very friendly chappy!

Hi Mary,
Dennis is a great character, I call him 'Captain Birdseye' cos of his white hair and beard. He is a retired merchant seaman and mans the Ag. Stef ferry to the three islands off the coast whilst he is there as relief captain. He usually travels back and fro on a scooter he hires for the duration of his holls. He is a good friend of mine and has a unique sense of humour! He is part of the May crowd but returns to Arillas in September usually for a month.
Yammas,
Martin.

Hi Martin
He sounds like a charachter, Captain Birds eye I'll be thinking of him as that from now on and I bet never boring. What a good way to enjoy Arillas and San Stefanos, good for him still continuing his love of boats.

Thanks Phil for your support. I'm just hoping it'll give me my confidence back and I hope that I can have a conversation in Greek, that's one of my goals. I've even booked myself in for overtime at work, something I never do.

Hey Mary guess what!

I've won the lottery so I might have to come with you afterall!  Admittedly it is only a tenner but that's not the point is it?  I  DID say if I had the lucky ticket I would come!!  7 17 49  were as lucky as it gets.

If only I could get a flight that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Easyjet have nothing available for those dates believe me I have checked.

Best solutions to this problem on a postcard please or better still post here!

How to make a £10 lottery win get me to Arillas in May with MaryH, MartinW and Captain Birdseye?

Cheers Nan x

Come on Nan how about putting a tenner on the euro lottery you may just end up with enough to get there and treat all of us to a house, see you there as we arrive on 8th  half hour before Martin and are sharing a taxi with him. Viv

Hi Nan. What a great idea. Turn a lottery tenner into a trip home. No more arms and legs, just spit roast lamb in Brouklis. Count me in...

Last year we thought we would be there from April until ??? now it's two weeks unless the numbers do it for us! Sadly last night we scored.... zilch. Oh well. two weeks is better than nothing...

Just returned from Corfu at 8.00 this morning - should have been much ealier - holiday report to follow , Arillas fantastic - as for Thomas Cook flights - Their new motto should be Don't Thomas Cook Book it - cause they overbook it! I was supposed to be flying back to my nearest airport Newcastle - instead because of the Thomas Cook cock up - flew to Manchester - over 100 miles away from my home and the said company  had to pay £200 for a taxi to get me home!!

Thanks Viv, Sharon and Martin,
I think I was a bit hysterical at the airport at 1st but I have to say the lady who manages all the check in staff, and Thomas Cook  Reps were absolutely amazing in the way they treat me. I got taken to the front of the queue, through security and they kept me company till I was in the departure lounge, and they rang Manchester and booked my taxi and gave me a number to call when I got there for the taxi, which I only had to wait a couple of minutes for and was driven home by a very nice taxi driver who even took me to my local shop to get a pint of milk. I'll be writing as advised by one of the reps to Thomas Cook, complaining but I will also be praising their staff on how they treated me, what top girls they all are.  Martin it was an honor to meet you. Holiday report to follow plus photos when I have fully recovered, it was my 1st day back at work today and staring at that computer screen was making me want to go to sleep as I was doing boring admin work.

Take care

My May 2009 holiday

Arrived at Newcastle Airport it was very foggy so didn’t think the plane would be able to take off, but it did and on time. But I don’t think I will ever go on a Thomas Cook flight again as it was very cramped and you will be able to see from my 1st post when I got back my flight home was overbooked so flew back later and to Manchester instead. It was an adventure and memories I will always treasure, even the bad bits, which now pale into insignificance! I won’t post the “ incident” in case of offending anyone, but a few of you already know what or, who happened!

The taxi journey from the airport was good seeing the stunning scenery of Corfu and the excitement the nearer I got to Arillas. Where I was meat by Martin at Bardis Sun Hotel and Dorita. Martin very kindly carried my case to my room, which had impressive views of the countryside and as it was on the corner, the sea also. What a perfect location for peace and tranqulity. As soon as I was in my room I went onto the balcony and smiled to myself and said, “I’m here, yippee, and anyone who heard me would think I was a bit nuts talking to myself but I didn’t care.  Then it was down to the Bar to have drinks and to get to know Dorita and Martin and Dennis who I find a very unusual sort of person a bit like Marmite! What a lovely hard working and excellent Mother Dorita is to her daughter Angelica, always finding time to help her with her homework and pay her loads of attention. 1st nights meal was in Grazela and this is where I saw the 1st of Arillas’s unique sunsets. The family who own Grazela are as most people of Arillas are very hospitable and fantastic cooks. I can’t say I’ve had one bad meal. I just wish that night I hadn’t been too tired to eat it all. After lingering over the meal, we went, as we would most nights finish off at Poppy and Spiros Bar (Bardis Sun Studios) for a few “nightcaps”. This is where I met several lovely people. Including a couple Jerry and Alison. If you are reading this it was a pleasure to meet you. What smashing down to earth people. We would have many a laugh and a chat. Alison and I decided to go shopping one afternoon and came back with nothing. Every husbands dream, she comes back and has spent no money. I made up for it later in Yiota’s shop, as every day there would always be some piece of jewellery or wrap or pretty trinket that would take my fancy.

I had the honour of meeting Viv and Pete, Janis and Barry as lovely in real life as they appear on the forum. I will never forget the night I was too sleepy to go out to eat then decided after all I would have a shower and wake myself up and head off to eat alone, as I past Thomas Vavillas Fish Taverna, they were all about to have a meal and invited my in to join them, so it was great company and a lovely meal of, Greek salad, sea bream and my very favourite Strawberries and Greek yoghurt, washed down with very easy drinking wine. I also met a lovely lady called Margaret, who is from my neck of the woods, and she also goes solo in Arillas, twice a year and is so comfortable doing so, she is another top lady and very easy to get on with. Margaret if you read this, hope I meet you again in September, if not next May. Martin is such great company we went on several walks around the village finished off by a drink or two, me lovely icy cold wine and Martin a couple of Mythos having a right good giggle. What a knowledgeable bloke and the perfect Gentleman. It was an honour to meet him. I’ll never forget the lovely afternoon we spent in Brouklis, as at last I’d got to visit it and met Dimitris for the 1st time, and later that evening had a top meal in there. Next time I come, I would like to book one of the rooms there as I think it’s in a great location as I know I would find it a comfort being in the “hub” of the village.

I loved the early mornings, after one of Doritas great breakfasts as they practically set  you up for your evening meal. Although later on in the holiday my willpower slipped and I succumbed to the mid day munchies!  Then I would walk up and down the beach, it didn’t matter that there wasn’t much of it there, I only needed the sea, I would have a swim in various spots on the beach then sit on one of the seats reading my teach yourself Greek book. Something I am seriously now going to take up instead of trying to speed learn the language a couple of weeks before my holidays.

I went snorkelling and now I’m getting more and more confident doing it, I have taken some underwater shots, but don’t know how they will turn out till I put the camera in to be developed, but if they are ok I will post them at a later date. On the second week, there were two surprises, well a surprise to me Ken and his daughter Sophie arrived. I was swimming in the sea and spotted them on the jetty, thought I was seeing things till I got out of the water and then Ken came up to me and said what are you still doing here!  Sophie was an absolute delight as she is a lovely girl and it was her birthday that week so I went with them to The Creperie where we put13 candles on 3 delicious pieces of cake and sang happy birthday, George, bless him bought her a piece of cake and some Orange juice. Then in the evening, Hannah in the coconut bar made her some none alcoholic Cocktails and bought here a silver heart necklace. I thought that was so kind and thoughtful, but that is the spirit of Arillas and it’s people and what gives it that huggable wow factor.

Janis, Barry and I introduced ourselves to each other on the Jetty another couple who I am now honoured to know. All in all, it was a memorable holiday, which I will never forget. I have so many things I want to say but I could go on forever. But as for going solo, yes I would do it again and my love of Arillas is stronger than ever.

Love
Mary

H i Mary!
A great report that brought back so many good memories. We really had a brilliant time didn't we. I recognize the photos you took on our 'village walks', you have captured another bit of Arillas for posterity. It was wonderful to meet you at last and we seemed to strike up a good friendship right from the start. That's Arillas for you! As it's been often quoted on these postings 'There are no strangers in Arillas, just friends you haven't yet met'. That's why I love the place so much'.
You have done such a good report, it doesn't leave me much to say! It was great to meet all the 'May regulars' and a lot of new faces from the forum. Viv and Pete's special day was a very moving occasion and I was so pleased I was there to share it with them, I will always remember it. Dimitris, Neil and Wendy, Ina, Kostas Tomas, Vassilis, Spiros Yani, Thomas Vavalis and family, what a welcome from them all to name just a few. Dorita, Aris and Angelica were wonderful as usual making me feel 'at home' and nothing was too much trouble. We tested the pool well this year didn't we! Doritas breakfasts are very special and as you say, enough to last until evening if you don't get too tempted by all the other great eating places in the village mid day!
The Greek Dancing night at the Marina was brilliant the best I've seen in a long time food good too. Dimitris did us proud at Brouklis, remember all the fireflies and and 'frog's chorus every night. It was a memorable two weeks, great company, friends old and new, G&T's with all the gang at Popy's to finish those happy days! Wish I was still there!
Must get my photos sorted, been quite busy since I got back. Hey, it's quarter to... (Margaret you've got a lot to answer for!)
Yammas to all, sorry if I didn't mention everyone by name,
Martin.

Hi Martin,
yes we did get on well what a fantastic place and yes I'll never forget " Margaret its quarter to! I loved the Arillas local pub it was great. The fireflies were amazing and the frogs, I've never heard frogs do that it was amazing. I'm sure your report will have different things I have missed out and different aspects of Arillas you experienced.

Sharon I will be posting more and maybe I'll send you an unedited version ha ha

Take Care

I thought I would try to publishing this report by Mary as an electronic document. This is the first attempt and will it will be updated with http links.

I am sure that there are more artistic people on the forum who could improve the  cosmetic appearance of the document.

Dimitris, I think there is a code available from Joomla, so that Issuu publications can be embedded into the forum.
