Title: Driving to Corfu
Post by: Marion on February 27, 2009, 02:22:17 PM
Hi everyone - thanks for your help with info re taking car to Arillas. Next questions are:  Can someone please advise the best routes across Europe.and cost effective way to Corfu using the Venice ferry service. Also how long it would take from say Dover to Venice so that overnight accommodation can be calculated bearing in mind that I am givien to understand that ferries are daily and you need to be there by midday on any given day. Also is it best to prebook or book on arrival.(Venice ferry). Sorry to sound so long winded but would appreciate any help/advice at all.  Thanks again.

Hi Marion,

When we did it we didn't plan or pre-book anything - but we were alot younger and more adventurous than we are now, lol!!!
We arrived in Calais early morning and made it to Lake Geneva on the first night after a fairly leisurely drive down eastern France. Found a very nice B&B for the night, right on the lake edge.
The next day we headed for Ancona and arrived about 7.30pm to find that there wasn't a ferry for 2 days - so slept in the car at the docks.
Next day, drove down the east of Italy to Brindisi. Booked into a hotel and caught the overnight ferry to Corfu about 4.00 pm the next day. I think we arrived in Corfu about 7.00 a.m.

Good Luck.

Angie

We drove over to Corfu in April last year to be there for the Greek Easter.  We went through the tunnel to Calais,  then drove through France  through the Mont Blanc tunnel into Italy and down to Venice. We allowed two days to get to Venice about 950 miles, you have to be at check in two hours before departure. We booked in advance because of the ferries being busy with people going to Greece for Easter. Coming back in October we had to get back for a wedding, we got off the ferry at 10 a.m Saturday in Venice and were home in Sussex by 8 a.m Sunday. You can go from Ancona to Igioumenitsa, the ferry takes about 16 hours you then need to catch a ferry to Corfu it means you  spend an hour longer driving in Italy but less time on the ferry, we are thinking of trying this way this year.

Hi Maggie if you go on to the viamichelin web site put in the start and destination of your journey click options then click avoid toll roads. This will give you a breakdown of the route the milage and time driving.

We live in Innsbruck so we only have max 4 hours drive to venice - consider driving down from the ferry via germany - no tolls on the autobahn. We have done th ferry to Innsbruck in 12 hours if you make sure you never travel on a Saturday - Sunday is the best as no trucks are on the roads. Then you need a vignette for the Austrian bit from Kusfstein to the Brenner road - then the toll for the Brenner - then it is about € 19 for the Italian motorway
The ferry usually goes at 14:00 from Venice and arrives in Corfu about 13:00 on the next day - We recxomend Minoan lines - the ferry is far superior to Anek. But make sure you book the Ikarus palace,Greek crew and very friendy good service and food, good clean cabins esp the De Luxe - the Eurostar Barcelona is the other ship they use and is not as good - mixed nationality crew - not clean!
The ferry has to go to Igomenitsa first and then back to Corfu which is why it takes longer!! Hope this helps Philippa

We've just been organising our road trip to Corfu. Philippa said we would need a vignette for the Austrian part of the drive. Does anyone have more info on this? Do we ahve to have it before we travel, or can we sort it out there? Any info would be great, thanks.

After a bit of research, I've found that we do need a tax sticker for Austria. Also that they can be purchased in petrol stations near the frontier, and at the frontier. For anyone else who needs to know, they can last for either 10 days, 2 months, or 1 year.
( I haven't managed to find out a cost yet, but I don't think it will be that much.)

Nothing new to contribute here but observations. I HATE driving with a passion. My excuse is I drink (so I don't have to drive.) Perhaps it is displacement behaviour because I don't want to. Driving to Arillas is not an option for me.

I love to read about Maggie's plans and the routes and the places and the stops on the way. Phillippa's encyclopaedic knowledge impresses me greatly. I would happily sit quietly in the back of their cars on the way. But all of the red tape?

Hello EasyJet, I'm back. Full of respect, but just don't understand... Please help
Phil

Phil, we're driving cos we've got lots of stuff to take over to our house. I'm looking forward to it, but will be in a van, so maybe not as comfy a drive as it might be? Red tape, well, Eileen has been a great help as I asked her for info on routes about a year ago. (we have planned this for a long time.) So, thanks Eileen. Philippa was also very helpful, by posting on this thread. Thanks Philippa. I wouldn't have known about the tax if I hadn't seen it here, but it was relatively easy to find out how to get it, once I knew.
Kevin, I suppose there will be an embassy, but i think I know all I need now. Thanks.
We're driving over in April, before the holiday season begins. It would be nice to have some sunshine for the week tho.

We are on the road now doing our first drive to Corfu. Our route and journey is not direct as we are visiting people on the way, firstly in North Germany and then in Geneva.

We set off yesterday through the Eurotunnel to Calais and then drove 350 miles in 5 hours to North Germany, motorway all the way, using a Satnav. After 2 nights here in Vreden, tomorrow we set off to Strasbourg for a one night stay in an Alistair Sawday Special Places Hotel.

We then spend 2 nights in Geneva and 2 nights in Venice.

We've booked everything online in advance including the Eurotunnel, 4 hotels, Vignette for Switzerland (£27) and the Ikarus Palace ferry to Corfu.

All going great so far, but looks like rain for our drive tomorrow.

Gute Nacht from Germany.

My idea of hell luvver. Have driven in Boston, Oregon, Dublin, Milan, Copenhagen, Lille, Rodos, Frankfurt..... and more. I was young then. The idea of driving to Corfu these days gives me the wobblies. Perhaps I don't want it any more. Chasing down the auotobahn no longer turns me on. What a waste of male hormones.... prefer to save them for my Jen...

but Brigette, can so understand your adventure. Just know yous will love it. Arillas does all of it.

Jen and me would rather spend our time with Hannah, Kostas and Perry in the Coconut bar in Arillas than sitting in a car negotiating roundabouts and satnav. Eating Roula's cooking at Brouklis, visiting Anna, Kostas Tasos and Theo at their studios, meeting Yannis, Litsa and Spiros again at Thalassa, renewing our friendship with all our local Arillan friends and sorry if we didn't name yous all luvvers.

For us is the being there is more important than getting there. EasyJet has helped us all to realise it. He understands the Greek attitude...

It sounds lovely to be able to drive all that way but I get stir crazy 4 hrs on the flight to Corfu! I have to stop every 2 hrs in a car and need to be "picked" out like a "winkle" and I am as as stiff as a board..  It would take a week to get to Corfu but it does sound like fun.

We dont drive abroad anymore, just too hair raising for us now and stressful, we like to take it a bit easier.

I would love to go to Strasbourg though, we really do love Germany, it is such a lovely clean and interesting country... we have "ancestors" from Strasbourg with my Germany/French connections.

Have a safe trip Brigette and Maggie!  Glad all your plans are coming to be realised now.    It is interesting to keep up with your journeys.

Hello all,
I read these posts with great interest, driving to Corfu sounds like a real adventure.
I ran the idea past my husband. His response was ''are you completely mad woman!''
Hhmm, guess we will just continue to fly. We have not yet booked for this year, serously want to amend that soon, its always great when you can start the countdown. x

Hello again.
We are now in Geneva visiting friends. The drive with satnav is so easy and the views of themountains and lakes en route have been breathtaking. Lots of snow today but not a problem.

We didn't see Srasbourg as we stayed in a little village outside but tomorrow we are being taken to Geneva by our friends for some site seeing and a day off from driving. Then 2 nights in Venice to look forward too.

We are so pleased we have taken this oppurtunity as for us it is an enriching and stimulating experience. Luckily we are not restricted to a 2 week holiday as we are retired and have no return tickets.

This is my dream !
To set off from my house and drive right down across Europe.
It must be fantastic to see the landscape and culture change as the miles go by !
I think the best holiday I had was a few year's ago when Yugoslavia was still intact and we opted for a coach holiday to Porec.
We were just sprog's in our 20's but the majority of the other passenger's were well over 60.
We'd previously been on holiday's to all the IN places by air to the IN places .
Boy did we have a good time !
Some of the old boy's (and girl's ) put us in the shade on the partying front and I have got to say "Experience win's every time "!
We party'd in France , Germany , Austria , Italy and then Yugoslavia !
It was a 2 week trip so we had 3 day's traveling there and then a week in Yugoslavia , and then 3 day's traveling back.
The route getting there was one way and a different one coming home.
I must add that there wasn't a longer period of 3 hour's on the bus before a stop for either refreshment's or an overnight stay .
I think Susan will agree that this was one of , if not the best time we ever had on a holiday.
The only fault with it was I wish I had been driving in my little car all the way there !
Oh ....yes another fault.....we had four different envelope's of currency that we had to change at every border .
But to all people over the age of  er.......55 we had the GREATEST time with them.
After 2 week's with what a lot of people would say were "Old Fogey's " I reinforced what I already knew.
"You're Dad's generation is alway's right "!
Sorry , I'm veering away from the original thread !
I love driving to anywhere.
Even better if I'm driving to somewhere I love !
Oh s*** I think I'm rambling !
Ok.......in a nutshell   I wish I was you !

Thanks for all your replies. It's great to be able to share this as we are experiencing it.

We are now in Venice and for us our first visit. It is as wonderful as they say and well worth the marathon walk we did today. I have always loved the Venetian style of Corfu Town. The port is in Venice itself and what a place to set off from tomorrow on the ferry to Corfu. Apparently it is an amazing view of the waterfront as you leave.

We are now in our 6th country and thank goodness for the Euro, apart from Switzerland, but they seem to accept our Euros with no problem. We're getting a little confused as to which language we are using today. You just get used to one and then have to get the brain onto another.

I didn't get the chance to travel much when young, just a bit of hitch-hiking in France and a Vespa trip to Germany. Then when we found Arillas we've kept on returning. This journey has taken us out of our comfort zone and what a refreshing change it has been to see other countries and cultures, especially as we have been visiting people who actually live there. We've taken the long way down to achieve this (1400 miles) but that was always the plan and an opportunity not to be missed.

We are now ready for an Arillas holiday.

Yes, we did make it. No internet (on order) here so having to log on when we can. The final leg of our journey was the 24 hour ferry from Venice to Corfu. The cabins and restaurants were good and the ship made good time, calling in Corfu first before the mainland ports. We were last on and first off. A southerly wind caused a little rolling, but we still slept well and had a relaxing time. We went on deck to watch Venice as we left and then saw the welcome sight of Corfu 24 hours later.
Now we are here. Easy days now to recover after our feat. The only question now is how do we get back, or do we go back at all?

Good luck Maggie! Look forward to hearing about your trip.

I have to ask Maggie, Brigette and Isobel. Are you all masochists? My idea of hell is driving into Glastonbury to get food (and vodka of course.) The very thought of driving through France, Germany, Italy, ah wherever. Hell on earth.

Quite understand your adventures and what you say, but like riggers it will be EasyJet for us. Hate that as well... Perhaps we need to go, but never come back....

Phil, We're taking the cheap option, we need to move furniture etc to our house, and it costs a lot to get someone else to do it. SO we decided cos we could fit it all into a van.....we'd do it ourselves!! Whether it's a good idea or not, well, I'll let you know when we return. Isobel is right. It is so easy to drive to Corfu. Almost half the journey is the ferry from Venice to Corfu. The rest is totally motorway and they are excellent in Europe. We weren't sure whether we were crazy to do it, but luckily really enjoyed the whole experience. We have both just retired so wanted to take the opportunity while we still could. Life for us just has to have some challenges, as was our experience of building our house here and now adapting to the Greek culture and our new lifestyle. It certainly isn't all beer and skittles.

We're also loving having our own car here. It is right hand drive of course, but no problem around Arillas. We've found the 4 wheel drive invaluable too, as the roads are in a terrible state. As we are here for a long time, car hire would be too expensive.

Maggie, you'll find internet access in most of the hotels and also on the ferry.

In October it was I think 1.10 euros through Europe and about 1 Euro in Corfu if you shop about. Dont ask me why.

I have been planning my journey back to the UK today leaving on Friday 8th on the 7am Ferry. Arriving Venice at 8am on Saturday 8th.

I figure on Lunch in Como at the lakes before pressing on through the Alps to Strasbourg. So dinner in France, a night in a hotel then up for breakfast and an afternoon ferry Dover/Calais. Home Sunday night.

Fingers crossed.

My reasons for taking my Suzuki Jeep out to Corfu echo's BBB. I found a low mileage 1996 soft top in OK Nick and spent a bit of time and love on it. I figured at 50 Euros a day to hire it would only take a few weeks to pay for itself. Then I thought I would export it and leave it at the Villa. It is the perfect car in Corfu. However Greek beuracracy meant that I would have to pay 8000 euros to import it. So its coming back home to the UK.

I will have to have a rethink. Yes it would be a 9500 Euro car on Corfu but I cant get over paying 8000 Euros for a car that would probably only fetch £1200 in the UK.

Anyway, the trek back will be done with my 9 year old daughter and I reckon it will be an adventure.

Let me know how you do Barry.

Regards

We did the Venice route last year, this year we are driving down to Ancona and catching the overnight ferry to Igoumanitsa which gets in about 8am.

Its the same problem for us with the car we will have to bring it back home in October
but it does pay for itself through the summer.

I must say sorry if I sounded a bit strong. In truth I am full of admiration for the way you have all adapted to the road journeys and your lives in Arillas. And also so glad to see you all networking to help each other. A revelation. And you all have my good wishes for your adventures.

I hate driving with a passion as you might have guessed. Not that I have never done it - I used to drive all over UK, Europe and lots of the USA. But now I want peace. Arillas is a little haven for us - we rarely need to go outside the village and usually don't want to. The thought of the car journey horrifies us both. But we talked this Sunday about flying to Venice and doing the ferry. Now that would appeal...

Takes all sorts - sorry if I offended.

Phil, I don't think anyone would be offended by your views. Not everyone likes driving, and let's face it, if It's quicker by plane, it's a no brainer. We all have reasons for driving over, ours being cost of moving stuff, and being scots, thats important.lol.
Anyway, the point of this post is that I'm wondering if anyone can give me some info on what to expect when we get to the ports. Are the queues horrendous? Or is it all very efficient? We've never done ferries before, so help please!!
Isobel, I will be waiting for your reports too. Have a good holiday.

Isobel we are going from Ancona this year because it is a quicker route.  We have done the Venice route which is very nice but this year we just want to get to Arillas. The ferry takes about 14 hours to Igoumanitsa and 1 hour from there to Corfu. The day we go there are four ferries going to Igoumanitsa. Will let you know how we get on.

Maggie when you drive into the port the minoen dock is the far end you should be able to see the ferry as you cross the bridge. If you arrive early park in any queue and go into the check in area they will give you a destination card to put in your windscreen. Just before boarding they will direct you into the line for Corfu very efficient. In the check in area there are light refreshment facilities, toilets etc. Hope this helps.

Do you have a route planned that I could put on Google Earth? It would be lovely to be able to trace your route.

I really must try it sometime, as it would be very handy having our car there.  The Venice route sounds particularly appealing, so does anyone have any idea of the mileage from Calais to Venice?  I would like to work out how much fuel it would take.  We use diesel, which I know is cheaper in mainland Europe.

Love the reports - but still sounds like Hell to me.

Days get more important as yous get older - why waste what's left on stress and satnav when you could be chatting to Kostas and Hannah in the Nut? Laying in the sun au naturel on Arillas North beach? Eating the best sofrito you ever tasted at Brouklis?

SleasyJet and half a day sacrificed is too much for me. Driving through Troumpeta is just Hell on earth.

Beam me up Scottie - destination Broukils. Wish it were 7th July...

Well, we did it!What a trip. The ferries were excellent, the driving was easier than anticipated. However, I don't think we will do it again! It was a necessary trip tho, and it cost us a lot less than having a company move all our stuff. If anyone is thinking of driving over, then if it's for a long stay, it's a good way to do it. However it's not a cheap way to get there. We used motorways all the way, because our time was limited, and the french tolls are expensive. It cost us around 100 euros each way. (including the vignette for Austria.) The food on the boats is expensive. We didn't have a plug adapter with us, so our mobiles died on us. That's something anyone contemplating a trip like this might  not think about. We did bring one with us on the return!
When we got to Arillas, it was decent weather, but on Wednesday morning it rained. SERIOUSLY!!!!! I have not experienced rain like that for a long time.....
And, 2 of my windows leaked!  It did improve in the afternoon, so we took time out to visit the creperie, and visit a few friends.
Now we're back here, and in 5 weeks, we will be back again in Arillas. To live there this time.

Hi Maggie and Gordon.

It was your parting shot that hit me between the eyes.

Quote
and in 5 weeks, we will be back again in Arillas. To live there this time.

It's not that we're green or anything. Not a bit of it. We just can't hide it. We will visit in July, and just hope to see you around when we're a bit sober. (We might have a reputation, but are usually drunk on being there without any alcohol at all. Well, only two Mythos perhaps....)

Bonne chance, bon voyage et bien fait. Er, I can do French but love Greek... got to get me thinking cap back on to do it in Greek like yous two have to learn now.
Love and very best wishes
Phil

Hi, Maggie.   Like Phil, we`re dead jealous, but in a good way.  You can now enjoy the benefits of all your hard work and the long hours on the road.
Quite simply, enjoy your new life and only occasionally think of us all stuck here wishing we were in your  shoes.

Well, you'll be without philandjen (p'raps a good idea) on your arrival. Courtesy of Gordon Brown and the exchange rate. We should have been part of the welcoming committee and so wish we were. Oh how hard is this life. We are there anyway luvver....

Make a great victory out of it all. Adore that countryside, enjoy the Greek way of living, remember us all who can only do it all on our computers. You know we are all still here for real.

compare the arillasdot com - sounds different - compare the realthing dot com...

Maggie and Gordon, you're the realthing. See you in Arillas

Thankyou for all your good wishes. Marion, I'm sure your boys will enjoy the trip. It is a great adventure, but I'm not very good at 'roughing it'.  We only did the airline type chairs on the ferry, so if I had to do it again, I'd have a cabin. However, I'm glad I experienced the trip.

Thanks for advice Maggie - Keith and Will have booked their ferry crossing Venice/Corfu and have booked a cabin so sould get some "shut eye"!! They are leaving Calais on the 4th June and have booked their Corfu crossing on the 8th June so can take their time in diving down to Venice. We have maps and "route ideas" all over the dining room table they are really looking forward to it!

Hi Maggie and Gordon - all the best for your future life in Corfu. How wonderful for you!
What a journey! Bet you're glad that's over! I used to drive most times when we travelled abroad in Europe, but then on one occasion I was tired, had been driving too long, it was pouring with rain, and we got lost! It was, as the expression goes, the straw that broke the camel's back - yes, you've got it - I got the hump! (Sorry... lol)
I've not driven since in another country - I just think, life's too short for all the hassle -and you can't have a drink.

Marion, They will have a great trip. 4 days is plenty time to get to Venice. Do tell them to be careful when they approach Venice tho.there's a brandnew road, which doesn't register with sat-navs. It's a concrete monster of a road. We ended up taking it instead of the right one, as there is a few roads branching off it. We had to follow it as there is no way to exit it, for a good few kilometers. However, when we did get off it, the sat-nav found us again, and directed  us to the port. Phew!
Janis, I've already told all our greek friends, I will only drive in Arillas when they get traffic lights at each end of the village. If I met another car on the way to the beach, or ,god forbid, a BUS! I'd have to get out of the car and ask someone else to navigate down the road!lol.
