Hi Davy-upstert69

I think there are many solutions to keep the mozzies away.

I use jungle formula and the Plug ins in the room. This seems to work for me.
This year i am also going to take vitamin B tablets.....Anything to stop the sods..

I was just thinking as I was in the shower this morning, (using my Source lemon shower gel) I wonder when we will get the first question about mozzies on the forum!

If you search for mozzies/mosquitos on the site, you will come up with everyone's personal choice to avoid the wretched things.  You will then be able to fill your suitcase with one of each product!  Personally I always use lemon shower gel and Avon Skin so Soft dry oil for the day, together with Autan stick at night.  Don't forget that they love your feet and, if they get bitten, there is nothing like sea water to relieve the itching.

Once again last summer the little sods loved my blood type 0 negative even though I started on the Vitamin B in February, so no difference there. Only way for me to survive in the evenings is to slap on the Jungle Formula or similar and keep reapplying every so often. And as riggers pointed out the plug in is a must.

Once I get bitten I am the worst scratcher in the world and then I get scarred. Even going to bed anesthetized with Mythos does not help as scratching is a reflex, conscious or not :)

We use Mosi off with Deet plug ins and always buy a tin of fly spray and give the room a blast before we go out for the evening, last year we tried a citronella type spray without deet ,disaster i had over 30 bites and anne had 40 odd that was in the 1st 4 hours so reverted to the Mosi off no further probs

We use jungle formula wipes and avoid wearing perfume and aftershave we make sure we spray the room before we leave to go out for the evening as well as the plug in

try sun cream  and after sun with insect repelent  Someone told me to avoid to much salt in your food

We followed this routine last year in June and only had one mossie bite

I blame the government, or maybe it's rose coloured specs, but sometime ago they used to spray the olive trees from aeroplanes but this was stopped due to complaints or H & S or whatever and then there appeared to be more of the damm things.
Somewhere I have a photo of a pilot waving back, they were that low.
Mick.
PS lots of Marmite (ugg) or my way , lots of garlic (yum) it works with me.

I echo other replies about Jungle Formula. My husband is very attractive to anything that flies and bites, especially mosquitoes. He also reacts badly to bites so he never goes out without insect repellent on. Last September we took Tropical strength Jungle Formula fluid and the plug in for the apartment and they both worked brilliantly. My husband didn't get bitten once, neither did our daughter. I got bitten on the way to the airport (or possibly in the airport) on the way home.

Just got home and regret to inform you all that the little perishers are already on the go. I forgot the mozzie plug the first night and now have two big bites on my face....most attractive. But I didn't need any spray going out in the evenings as it's still quite cool at night.

I've just been to our local Tesco and bought......and I realise that I run the risk of ridicule here......some anti-mosquito socks !!!! Honestly, I kid you not, anti-mosquito socks !! Two pairs for £4, so I'm gonna give em a go. Apparently they "continue to work even after washing". I shall repot back in due course.

This year I think I may have mentioned it before but I dabbed some tea tree oil on as soon as I knew I had a bite and it did work very well by stopping the itching and reduced the lump, a little bottle is about £5 but well worth a go.

Last year we ran out of Jungle Formula and bought a liquid from a pharmacy in Corfu Town. It smelled of Citronella, was just as effective and was far more pleasant to use than JFormula. How I wish that I kept to empty bottle so that I could replace it.

I've just came out of the shed with my new invention to stop mossies on the leg's.
A pair of Susan's old tights reinforced with Brillo pads !
Slightly uncomfortable ,not very pleasing on the eye but let's see a mossie get through those fellers !

Post by: Julie j on June 26, 2008, 07:27:56 PM
You can buy oil of Citronella at any chemist, it really does work, but tends to kill my appetite, which is not difficult.
Another tip is to put some dettol down the drain in the bathroom of your apartment before going out at night, the mozzies hate it (they told me)

That's a brilliant idea Barry, why didn't i think of that.

I usually only get the odd mozzie bite, this year i was into double figures. Grrrrrrrrr.
That is with plug-ins and jungle formula. They soon disappeared though after an application of antihistamine cream a few times.

Post by: Baldy Barry on June 27, 2008, 09:40:45 AM
I usually put some anti mossie stuff on at night before we go out and also give the room a good spray before we leave and also the plug in thing.
For the first few night's I'm totally paranoid about them and if we're in a taverna or somewhere I'm constantly rubbing my arm's,leg's,neck or anywhere where they could get me.
Susan say's "What the hell's the matter with you ?Have you got St Vitus dance or summat"!
With me it's just the thought of the little sod's having a free meal on me !
If we go to bed and I hear that high pitched whine in the room (no not Susan ) I won't go to kip until I've tracked it down and splattered it !
Yup that's me. Running round the room at 3 or 4 in the morning in my undies with a rolled up Woman's Weekly in me mit !
Fortunately for Susan they don't bother her !
But they LOVE me and Jack.

That's it Barry - beat 'em on the bottom with that Woman's Weekly. I guess Susan wears a flameproof nighty....

Seriously though, we so identify with that. They don't seem to touch me (never been bitten in all the time I've spent out there) but they eat Jen alive. I can also be seen running round the room at 3am (with even less on) until the little b****r has been liquidated...

best wishes

Just got back from a fortnight in heaven and can report an abundance of mozzies.
Despite this, (and at the risk of sounding smug), my wife, 4 year old and myself didn't get one bite !
Some tips:
Liquid plug-ins (at least 2)
Spray the room liberally on arrival and every 2'nd or 3rd day
Spray all visible skin every evening
MOST important, when you get back at night open and shut door quickly and have a GOOD look around your white painted room for the little sods, because with practise they're quite visible (us proffesionals prefer a fly swatter to rolled up mag ! ).

This year i got through 4 cans of spray and it was worth every penny.
My wife thinks i'm obsessive but, as i said, not one bite !
Another suggestion for the brave is to wait for said wife to go to sleep then remove all her covers and use them for yourself therebye providing "decoy".
Good job she does'nt read this !
Happy hols.

Staying in Brouklis we had pull down mozzie nets on all the windows and the balcony door and even the bathroom window had a net. And of course we had the nets hanging from the seiling above our beds. We hardly used the plug in's in the rooms and when we went out in the evening we slapped on eau de Jungle Formula and avoided any other perfumes.

Result after two weeks stay: Me 1 bite and Heidi 3. Not bad at all in my book :)

We should be careful not to let everyone reading this think that Arillas is a resort full of drunken lunatics running naked except for mosquito proof socks around the place at three in the morning swinging towels around thier heads in some sort of bizarre mating ritual!!!!!

Citronella oil normally does the trick and it costs about a quarter of the other stuff!

In agreement with Erja (hi Erja !), physical prevention is best, backed up by chemicals.
I used locally bought spray (red and yellow can, about 5 € ) allthough i've been told jungle formula lasts twice as long (also twice the price).

Post by: graham on June 27, 2008, 06:33:29 PM
The little clickers that spark against your skin do a bit to stop the itching, apparently if you use them repeatedly on a bite they stimulate your body's antibodies into action and that stops the itching, however, prevention is better than the cure so use the jungle stuff first!

Bit of useless info here on why mosquitos bite some but not others.
According to an anthropologist friend they go for common blood types (eg. O, O+), so if you're one of those who doesn't get bitten, be carefull not to need a transfusion 'cos you're a rare type !

I bought a metre of impregnated band and made it into wrist and arm bands one year...  almost made one to go round Mikes head (it was combat green colors) but thought he would look like Rambo... LOL.. Kept them away whilst we were sleeping though.

I spray diluted citronella oil around the door and window frames and on the bedding at night too, burn citronella incense sticks too... you name it we have done it!

I mentioned one time before that we had one of those burning coils on the verandah... dont do what we did!!!  brought it inside... it was merrily burning away for a bit, we nearly died from the fumes and it set the smoke alarm off!  Lesson learnt there!

Sounds hilarious BG. Jen and me bring Nag Champa incense sticks we can buy here in la-la land (Glastonbury) and burn them on the balcony/verandah if we ever sit out in the evening or late. They create a very pleasant smell, and seem to keep the little b*****s at bay.

Your dreams of Mike being Rambo might be for a different forum though.....

Just got hold of in a charity shop (brand new) an electronic mosquito repellent in the shape of a ladybird ... its supposed to keep them away from babies, clip it on a buggy etc.  the packet says it takes one 5v battery..... it emits a barely audible sound of a dragonfly's wing beat - the mosquito's mortal enemy! (West Nile virus whatever that is, wonder if it works for the Arillas mosquitos)   I thought it might be worth a try and could clip it on the headboard of the bed or the curtains..  Watch this space I will let you know!  I am game to try anything to keep them away

Jen

There was an "MGM" this afternoon in Arillas. ( Mozzie General Meeting )

A vote was taken and was unanimous that no body will be bitten this weekend.
Instead they are all waiting for Monday evening for a certain couple to arrive!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The repellant we use, but mainly during the morning working out side, is the Superdrug Buzz off. It keeps mozzies and any types of insect away from us.
Just a thought.

You're spot on though - they never go near me so I must have strange blood. It can't be the alcohol cos Jen drinks and smokes more than me if that's possible. They nearly carried me home last night, and Jen went back for more.... I think erja would applaud that.

Bit of an update on the mossie front!! Hope someone can help with some info. My brother recently returned from Crete got bitten by mossies but was given some "flowering basil" which was apparently growing everywhere, by some kind local person and told to rub it on bit like dock leaves.  He said the relief was instant and it stopped the itching altogether Does anyone know if Arillas has it's own patch of Flowering Basil and what does it look like?

Any budding David Bellamies or Bellamesses out there know the answer?

Interesting reading who has and who has not been bitten by the mozzies. Could it have anything to do with which floor you are on? We were on the 3rd floor at the Thetis and used the usual plug ins and doused ourselves with Jungle Formula but did not see 1 mozzie in our room whilst we were there. Yet people lower down were being bitten left right and centre during the night even though they were using plug ins etc.
The only time we were bitten was on the last evening of our stay when we stayed out by the pool until 7-30 to catch the last rays - seems like we caught the first mozzies as well.

Hi to all fellow bitten friends,  after many years of being bitten I have finally found out how not to get bitten and if i do get bitten how to stop the itch !!  I use sun screen from Boots with insect repel already added, as they do bite in the day and I think people only think the little buggers come out at night, and make sure you put the cream on before you go aout at night.  I always buy a spray on holiday and spray the room before we out for a few beers and usually that will get rid on any in the room before we come back too pie eyed to notice if there are any in the room.

But if you are bitten the best thing is a cream called Anthisan, stops the itch but also take some anti hystamine (sorry don't know how to spell) pirton tabs are good.  Don't mean to put a downer on your hols but they do love my blood and the tablets stop any swelling if like me you have a reaction to bites.

We are really looking forward to our holls, only 9 more sleeps,  I do remember 5 years back and they did spray the whole area when we where there but not the following year so not sure if they still do.

Here's to a none scratching holiday !!  Can't wait !

Of course all these measures are great for keeping the little blighters away but it means nothing if your wife leaves the bedroom window open all night behind the curtains (my bed nearest the window ) and you're woken up at 4 in the morning by the sound of about 50 of em whining in perfect harmony and having a "Mossiefest " on my bare back !
The left side of my back and shoulder next morning looked like the area round double top on a dartboard !
Oh how everybody laughed !
Except me .
Ouch !!!

Was going great guns with my avon dry body oil and boots repellant spray for 5 whole days.... you guessed it!! 2 days before coming back I get five monster bites on my legs big, purple and still itchy. Never mind there were a lot of them about and others had more bites and didn't winge. Lovely time inspite of the mossies anyway perhaps I should have tried the stilts, maybe I will next time :)

Cheers Nan x

They look really sore Barry, I hope they healed up quickly.

I have got everything this year, patches for my skin and clothes, roll on repellent, marmite, Vit b tablets, plugs in, a buzzy thing, net for the window, antihistamine, bananas I can buy out there and my favourite GERMOLENE!

Perhaps I ought to pack some cling film and wrap myself up in that!

Been bitten to bits previously.  However this year ( 2 weeks June 17th - July 1st ) no bites at all!!!!!!!.  Used Tea Tree & Lemon shower gel and followed that with an application of Mozzie Milk.  Avon Skin So Soft had the same effect.  The secret is not to wear perfume or aftershave which attracts the little b*****s.
