Title: Money Question
Post by: Grockle on April 17, 2008, 11:31:35 AM
Hello all,

First time on this site so hope you will bear with me if you have heard this
question for the umpteenth time !!.

Todays exchange rate is 1.19 euro to the pound, pretty dismal, I would like
to ask long timer's if it would be better to bring sterling cash with me and
exchange it there and are there any places in Arillas that will do this ?
I have read some queries on this site that answer this question but an up to
date view of the current situation would be appreciated.

What ever the outcome of the Pound/Euro I shall make the best of our first
visit to Arillas.

Thankyou in advance
Grockle.

Hi Grockle and a big welcome to the site!

We are all currently depating this very topic with everyone's hols getting nearer.  There are lots of places to change your money in Arillas and they usually compare very favourably with the UK rate.  Our roving reporter Eggy who lives over there is going to check them all out when they open.  Watch this space!

Where are you staying and when are you going?

Hi Jo,

Thanks for the quick reply, will look out for the reports.   We will be visiting
Corfu for the first time May the 16th and will be based at the Marvel,

Found Arillas by chance as did not want a place that did non stop partying
nothing against a party crowd but not for us, this site very informative so
have a rough idea of Arillas.

Am looking forward to the holiday but the Pound slumping is certainly the
pits !! less to spend...:-)

Regards Grockle

I believe Thomas Cook are doing 1.23 to the pound for transactions over £300.

Its not a lot better but at least its a 'Free' Mythos or 2 !!

Hi
been tracking the euro exchange for the past few weeks as due to go to Skiathos in 13 sleeps time.  We have also booked Arillas for October at the moment the Post Office has 1.22 as an exchange.  Anyone got any beter offers.  But blimey cannot wait, we have moved house over the last few days and maybe new job on the horizon, just want to get away.  Arrilas is beautifull with loads of good people so whilst October is far away we still look at the pages everyday and cannot wait to get there!

cheers, Yammas

Did anyone see Watchdog tonight on BBC 1? If not you can read about using bankt cards abroad here.....
 http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/tv_and_radio/watchdog/reports/holidays_and_travel/holiday_20080428.shtml

It appears that some people had their cards stopped just because the Banks computers picked up "irregular withdrawal patterns". The cards were stopped even though the accounts were well within Credit Limits.

It pays to keep your cash well topped up, and not go to the cash machine when you are nearly out of money. The thought of being on holiday and unable to withdraw any money is frightening, especially if you knew you had plenty of funds available.

Always make sure the security is unlocked too, bt letting the bank know what dates you`ll be away etc.

This happened to us last year. Plenty of money in the account but could not withdraw at the cash machine in Arillas. When we got home received a letter from the bank asking us to telephone re irregular withdrawl attempts. Fortunately we had taken plenty of travellers cheques with us and had access to a second bank account with which we had no problems. I suppose the bank were just being security conscious but would have been worrying if we did not have access to other funds.

Hi grockle. Welcome to the mad house (forum!)

Big issue at the moment - we're all used to 1.45 or similar. We have used the ATM in Arillas several times with no problem. But we always contact both the bank and one of our credit card providers explaining we will be in Arillas, Corfu, and making unusual withdrawals (usually to pay for Eggy's ouzu lol!)

Fortunately we won't have any tyres to be let down - we both drink and don't drive....

Having been victims of fraud several times we are paranoid about security. Much rather the bank acted than let it happen again. Can always phone and get it sorted.

I wish we were still Arillas virgins - we could go and discover it all over again. You will have an amazing holiday, and join the ranks of all us Addicts!

best wishes
justphil

Hi All.

Thanks for all the replies, always do masses of research when I visit anywhere new !

All sorted now, as only 2 weeks to go !! My Hotel looks great, know I can book up a couple or so of trips and go for walks  the Euro now at 1.22, bringing a card only for an emergency had it ripped off twice and it was a Nationwide card !! the Bank covered but the shock of the "cheek of it" stays with me...lol..

So thanks to all for putting up with the stupid questions I am really looking forward
to my no hastles holiday.

Regards Grockle.

Hi Kes, Post Office is quoting 1.2281 online at the mo. May not be the same in all branches though.

yes just been to PO .... over the counter  1.20 if you get £500 worth

Still 1.22 at PO at lunch time, think Thomas Cook shops will give marginally
a little more if you ask for their VIP rate.

I remember my first visit as if it was yesterday, i know you will enjoy !!

Money wise I know the pound is low against the Euro but i am sure you will still find arillas good value.

Say hi to Dimitris in the Brouklis and all the gang at the rainbow.

Have just looked at my online banking following my return from Arillas on Tuesday. I had to use quite large sums of money this time on things for the house and I used my Nationwide flexaccount card at the ATM in Arillas (no commission). Without doubt this has to be the best way to get money - I got between 1.246 and 1.271 during the two weeks I was there. So...definitely better than changing in the UK or bringing cash to change in Arillas.

Thats really useful information Sandy because I tend to get cash out with my card instead of taking cash with me. I just have a bit of a worry about the machine not working. Does anybody have any idea of how often the machine is out of order?

I used it twice a day four days running and it was fine....and it didn't run out of money!!!

Terry, I used the machine last year most days, cos I didn't take any euros with me. I never had any problem getting money out of it!!! I don't think that i have seen anyone posting complaints about it not working so far...

The machine has never been a problem to us all over the Winter.

(Though sometimes I got to wishing it was, just occassionally!) Hate spending money!

And ....
If it is out of order then Sidari is a good backup - I know a cheap taxi to get you there.

It's good to hear there is no problems with the ATM. How disappointing it could be to go and there is no cash, or broken.

Eggy what a Gent you are to offer your taxi sevices in emergencies like this.  :)

Cheers.

That's the winner Kevin! lol lol

Ouzo Cars has just been born.... Ain't got nowt on Fawlty Towers but just imagine the sitcom. Eggy eating his pickled onions, while Terry in his pop-sox and sandals drives the red pug to Afionas with a very happy Sandy as paying passenger. Riggers by the side of the road selling watermelons. Cut to Brouklis, where phil and jen order a taxi after mountains of galactoboureko, but told the only ouzo-cab is occupied. Long lingering look into the distance at the Metaxa. But not enough money. Need an ouzo-cab to the ATM (can't stand up let alone walk.) Meanwhile......

Just fill it all in then you comics and scriptwriters out there....... could be a best seller!

love you all
Phil

Hi
I think most everyone is in agreement on your post. If its your first time in Arillas it wont be your last... Chill time .... some places take cards well most do and you will get a good rate that way  but you will need some euros. There are also a few exchanges in Arillas you will be able to change sterling and we found last year we got a very good rate, so you wont have a problem but I am sure eggy wil post something at some point. Our son loves the place he is off there in 5 weeks and we are back there in 15. You will love it.

Thanks for posting Martin. Join the Arillas Addicts in re-living it every day. A lot of sense in your comments about needing some cash. Other posts here deal with that.

How old is your son? Ours are 27 but not yet Arillas Addicts. They may be one day tho.... when mum and dad live there.

That could have been my post. That's how Jen and me feel anyway.

You obviously follow the forum from your comments about our illustrious Eggy, so come and join us in the day to day banter about our favourite place and keep posting.

best wishes
