Title: Webcam on Horizon
Post by: Eggy on February 24, 2008, 03:28:19 PM
This poor ole webcam is on it's last legs as most of us,who have viewed the daily pictures, can testify.

Full credit to Dimitris here for rallying round local Taverna/Appt/Hotel owners to contribute to a new webcam. Plus, I'm told, the "home" support of UK Villa owners.
( You all know who you are - I won't embarrass by namimg names )
All these businesses recognise how important this is to all Arillas regulars and also in promoting Arillas to the standard of clientele to which it is targeted.

They've done their bit.
So. how about we do ours?
Just a suggestion to any of us that have bought an " Arillas CD"
How about we donate the money towards a new webcam? Our 45 euro plus contribution on it's own will go a long way when added to all the others and very soon there is a new webcam and much more better pictures that we can all appreciate.
( And if you haven't bought the CD yet then do your bit this year! )
Your comments are welcome all.

Cheers
Negg

Neill, thats a very good idea. (I'm embarrassed cos I forgot to get my cd last Sept. )
I will however collect one in June. I think most of us forumites would be happy for the money to go towards a new webcam. It is after all, us watching it every day!.

Hi Eggy, No problems use our Euros for any thing in Arillas, and the web cam is the perfect thing to put it towards, as we look at it every day on the Tinternet, hehe ;) As we bought ours last September, and it is played very often. XX

I am just catching up with a few posts because I have had the "Eggy Lurgy" all weekend and the last thing that I felt like doing was to look at a laptop screen.

I made a suggestion quite a while ago now about members subscribing to a new webcam and I will certainly donate some money. I still need to pay for my CD, so I will now give €20 instead of €10. I just wish that there was a way of getting the money to Arillas before I go next July.

The pleasure of seeing the pictures from the webcam everyday, is priceless and  I even have the webcam on my Firefox Homepage, so I can see it as soon as the browser is launched.

The work that Dimitris puts into this website and forum is just amazing and it must also be a worry to him, at times, as well. The security aspect can be a nightmare ( as seen on another post today).

There is one other thing that can easily be taken for granted, and that is that Dimitris is a person who could be trusted 120%. This may seem an odd thing to say, but we all know that whatever money we put into a fund, it will be spent on the website. The forum and website has not been setup as a commercial  venture and the daily effort put in by Dimitris needs to be helped as much as possible.

From my experience it is not just the cost of a webcam that needs funding, it is the additional costs of installation, maintenance, software and cabling. If all the forum members and the local businesses just donated €10 each we could have a webcam that would give us all, many years of enjoyment.

I am sure that there must be a way of making donations on something like PayPal.

If this becomes a serious consideration maybe I could help as I am going to Arillas before the start of the season and I have a Nationwide account that I use for out there....no payment for withdrawals....just a thought.

Hi Sandy, that's such a kind gesture. :-)

I paid my donation to Dimitris via Paypal, but I shall leave Dimitris to inform everyone which method suits him best.  I'll pm him just now.

Sharon,

I need more sympathy than just a "poor baby". I didn't watch the United match but I saw the highlights - a good win, maybe they will winn the Premiership after all.

Eileen, Sandy.

If Sandy drinks the retsina on the deck at the Horizon it would be worth paying for a better webcam to be able to watch the drinking session live.

Coming back to our subject,
I have had this kind of discussions in the past with terryW and with other members,
I believe that the forum members that are also arillas visitors or potential customers of any business situated in Arillas and area SHOULD NOT have to pay for what they get from arillas.com
Those who ought to pay the "damage" SHOULD be the people who are benefited ( including my self) from all you people that love Arillas.
This is my personal opinion, I find it a bit embarrassing from the point of view that the consumer has to pay for the product's advertisment
I'm also very worried that we may decide and arrange donations etc but WE are only a fraction of our forum's majority. I must say that this is common  in online-forums.
most forums like ours have about 2000-3000 members but only 30-50 people do most of the posts and answers.

However, I have never been able to calculate exactly how much it costs me to run this website but I think if I add my internet connection , hosting & bandwidth transfer per month , domain registry, hardware & software , wireless antenas, powers stabilizators ( ups), books and everything else I may need per year, then it comes on about 2000.oo euros per year ( DON'T TELL MY WIFE). part of this money I get back from some commercial advertising space that you must notice in some parts of the website ( Googleadds)
This is something that I can afford to pay as I see it as a hobby and not as a business opportunity.
Running this website I have dicovered capabilities in me  that I never knew I had and I'm looking forward to expand my knowledge as much as I can.

If you people think that it is necessary to donate or if that makes some of you feel better the I can add a magic " donate box" to my paypal account and within minutes you can get rid of your money.
Be sure that you will not decrease my costs by doing that.
I will still be spending my 2000 more or less euros per year PLUS the money that comes on top form donations etc.
I think I wrote enough of my thoughts now I;m not always that inspired.

Please  let me know what you think!

Dimitris Kourkoulos
You do so much for the Forum and you can see from all the responses here that we, as the forum, can do just a little for you, the Forum and of course Arillas.
We accept that it is your hobby but it is our hobby as well.

All your comments are listened to and noted and do not fall on deaf ears.
HOWEVER !
This is not open to negotiation:-
So -  Consider this as a donation to not only your hobby but ours as well.

AND NOW I MAKE IT OFFICIAL

We,as regular Arillas Forum visitors and friends would like to donate all profit received from the sale of the "Arillas Song" during the year 2007,
We also agree to all profits from the pledges and sales from this CD for 2008 to help with the proposed new webcam and continuing upgrades of the website.

So, you little tinker you, you have to accept this.
( It is not open to discussion )

This forum is like a very large family and good families are always there for each other.

Dimitris,

you have no chance to all the members!
If we want something to do, we do!
We all like to have a look on the webcam.
If we can not be in Arillas, we want to see it on your webside!
I can understand you very good,
but here you can see how we all love Arillas!
Don't think about it and take our present.
The money from the CD is very good idea.
And if somebody else want to give more, it is ok!
And I remember that I forget my Cd last year :(
But I will take it this year!
And if it is more money, as you need for the webcam, no problem,
I think you know what to do with it! :)

With love
Marika

hello again everyone!
I know and  I understand your feelings by 100%.
I have considered about your offer  and  talked to my Psychiatrist about all that.....
I'm sure that If I will do this my personality will be hurt in some point.
On the other hand, I do not want o heart anyones feelings.
I only deal with money in my personal business and if I will accept donations for my hobby then it is not going to be a hobby anymore.
Imagine that you like painting, and someone tells you that if you paint for him a portrait he will give you 500 euros.
Are you going to have the same pleasure as if you would have done it to kill your time?

SO my decision is definite as far as donations are concerned.

Consequently, I can point you a fiew ways of how you can help our website in different ways,

One of the thinks I would love to have for the website is a local meteorological on line station.  ( JamesW should know about this gadgets)
1)Lets have a search on the web and see what is the best solution for a website like ours!
2)lets find out how much it would cost
3) Lets find out how many people would be willing to donate for such a "gift" for arillas.com
4) Let's divide the total price by the number of people who are donating.
5) We post it to the Webmaster and leave him and his team to do the rest.
At the end of that we have all helped to upgrade the services of our favorite website and we are waching the arillas-weather in real time not only with a webcam but also with real time numbers!.

I have seen something similar here!

Now the members can feel we're putting something back in for all we get out of being on Arillas.com. Would be a great enhancement to the site - online weather as well as pictures! We will feel even closer than before, which is what most of us keep dreaming of.

Jen and me will be happy to contribute.

And Eileen - think of Eggy as the pilot and riggers as first officer! Do they make executive jets that run on ouzo and Glenfiddich??? I would apply to be flight engineer!

I think he already puts alot of work into it and wouldn't want to add to his workload.

Dimitris,

The specification of the new webcam looks very good, and I can't wait for it to be installed. Do you know of any current live webcam's that use the same camera. I have had a look but can't find any.

I did find this site ... http://www.webviews.co.uk/Greece,2,10,3,20,4,30.html  and found that the Arillas webcam is not listed.

This one at Jersey is good and it is one that be controlled remotely ...

EEG,

I think you should walk to Leicester Square one lunchtime and give us a wave from this webcam ....

Before we are all confused again I would like to say again what I have been trying to say on my previous posts...
I do not wish to deal with  money that come from forum members or other website visitors.
However, after a lot of EGGY and OUZO pressure I accepted the money that was collected from the cd's from the Arillas Song.

FROM NOW ON, we have to arrange  a way how anyone who wants to donate how to deal with that.
(If you read my previous posts you will see what I mean.)

About the weather station I will find out some info and post a separate message,

Hi all.

How about getting some Arillas Badges made that could be bought in Arillas that would advertise the website and like what was mentioned a while ago, could be used to let forum members know who other forum members are!!? The money raised by the sale of the badges can all go to website fund.

Us Forum members would have to pay for the manufacture of them and i have enquired about cost and the more you buy the cheaper they are, for example 100 badges would cost £169 (£1.69 each) + VAT. We could all cover the cost and then if we say 2 euro a badge all that money goes into the website fund?

Just a suggestion.

I think we should have a "Shoe Museum"
We all donate our used trainers and flipflops after 1 or 2 very hot weeks in Arillas.

Terry W could start us off.
(But I think we may have to get an airtight glass case for those!)

I would donate mine but, at the end of August 07, they were last seen seaking off towards Sidari and never returned.

( First Kirkby Terry, now Sidari - What is this world coming to? )
___________________________________________________________________

Dimitris is very happy just to allow us to donate the profits from the CD sales but I do know, from his reactions yesterday, that he is very appreciative of all the Forum offers to contribute.  Maybe time for us bite that ole bullet on this one and sort out what can be done about this weather station.
Suggestions anyone?

Thats a really good idea Paul, especially considering how uncomfortable Dimitris feels about accepting 'direct' donations.  This way everybody gains...the purchaser a badge/cd or whatever and Arillas a weather station.

You have inspired me and I've been wracking my brain here for other ideas.  Maybe this is a useless one but I'm willing to try...is there any way a bulk buy of bottled Olive oil or Local wine could be purchased, then labeled with a something appropriate to the Arillas or fund?  There surely would be a good number of visitors who would be happy to buy the items even without knowledge of this website or the good cause involved. Personally I'm always on the look out for locally produced items and goods to take home as gifts and I think I've exhausted them all by now!

A bottle of wine is always included in the welcome pack I provide free for my guests, I would also be willing to add a bottle of Olive Oil to the pack.  It would be lovely if these items were not only made that wee bit more special for our guests but would also help our weather station fund.

I'd be willing to spend time labelling when I'm over in May! LOl...I'd have to sample the wine first....of course!!!

Im Sure Eggy could get the Cocunut and a few other places stocking the badges on the bar etc to maximise the amount of people the badges are seen by?

I think we should have a "Shoe Museum"
We all donate our used trainers and flipflops after 1 or 2 very hot weeks in Arillas.

That would be useless Eggy, not one Sole would visit it except or maybe  a few old Crocs could be the exception.

I shall heel, sorry heed your words on this and quietly vanish back into my cupboard.

Badges are a great idea! They would identify present members of the forum, and introduce new visitors to the website. The cost per badge is minimal, and should be a great seller!
Dimitris you do a great service for us. You should be proud of what you have achieved. Keep up the good work. We are all willing to support you in additional costs.
Martin.

On the weather front.... we could all send over large pieces of seaweed... and he could let us know if it was wet or dry.... wouldnt cost anything then..

Sorry.... I'm blonde... I can be silly if I want to!

Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry .... oh s**t,  doolally is my Irish roots! And I don't apologise for that. You know you want to.....

Well said BG - stuff the technology - let's all ignore it. Sadly I have to understand it but I don't have to like it. I'm not blonde, I'm grey. Greyguy? Could be my new forum name...

Loved your post. Totally understood the sentiments. Maggie Thatcher would say I'm a wet. Definitely not dry (Sandy and riggers stop laughing!!)

I think you've got a point - the seaweed might tell us more than all the electronic gadgets, and as Jen just said "who gives a s**t we're not THERE!"
