Hello!  Me again!

Everyone's been so helpful I have come back to ask yet another question!

I know this is going to be a difficult one to call, but I have no idea what I'm doing!  I'm going to change our currency tomorrow (before I spend it!) and we're not sure how much to take! 

We aren't planning on doing too much, mostly relaxing on the beach because we're both escaping stressful jobs!  We basically want to take one trip to Aqualand, then it's just food (everything bar breakfast!) and drinks in the evening.  I don't want us to be short of money but we also don't have a great deal of it!  We're going for a week at the beginning of September and there's just two of us.  Would someone mind advising as to what the average meal in the restaurants on the beach for example cost and how expensive drinkss etc are?  I just want to try and work out a ball park figure of what people would take!

Hi we normally go for 7 days, there is me, Mick and Calum and I spend about £500.  We don't seem to run out of money but what I do is I divide it into days, anything left gets carried over to the next day.  We always have money left, not alot but a little.  We have a full English breakfast each, snacks at lunch from Alex's and a main meal on a night.  We have numerous drinks throughout the day as well and usually stay in the Coconut bar till the early hours so have a brill holiday.  Not sure if this helps.

No that's great, thanks a lot Jill!

We were thinking to take £400 for the two of us, so I'm assuming that that should be ok.  We can always take the cards and get extra cash out if we need it, but holidays aren't cheap at the best of times - with spending money we'll have spent over £1000 for the week away and it's difficult not to get carried away with the spending!

Know what you mean. 
The first time we went to Arillas there was a guy who had argued with his girlfriend.  She kicked him out of their apartment and kept all the money. Poor guy was sleeping on the beach and begging for drinks, food etc.  Remember for some stupid reason I bought him a large bottle of coke and some crisps, thinking back it should have been water and something healthy to eat.  We managed to run out of money on the last day, was never so pleased to have a meal on the plane as I was that day. It was our first holiday away with out the kids and I think I got carried away buying presents.

I agree £400 should be enough, we spend more since we started taking Calum with us.

If you do not already know, there is a cash dispenser in Arillas.
Local campaigning did a great deal to have it installed, for us holidaymakers and the locals.

I was planning to take 150 Euros each, for our week in September 2007

It saves carrying a wad of notes.  :-)

We took £650 for the 2 of us and we spent it all, it just depends on where you eat and how many drinks you have etc etc, but we bought some pressies to take home and a bag each for ourselves and some cigarettes, so it wasnt all spent on the actual holiday of you know what i mean.

We normally get through £700 and this is for food, drink, sunbeds on the beach, a few gifts and booze to take home.  We dont very often have much left only a few Euros in change and the odd note!

Hi

Before the cash machine we always used to take a mimual amount of euros (enough for the taxi and a couple of meals) with the rest in travellers cheques. We have always found that the exchange rates are better in Corfu then they are in the UK, so change our money there.

Like Shuey & Smiffy we would normally budget on £100 per day for food, drinks, sunbeds, excusions etc for 2 people. Sometimes we have surplus at the end of the holiday but we think of this as a deposit for our next trip to Arillas!

Unfortunately for me most of what we have left is spent in the duty free shop on whiskey - Yuk!

That is one of the reasons we are going back in September.  We went for the first time in July and had about £400 left at the end of it.  So we left a deposit with Philip at Tria to come back.  It is really cheap in Arillas, we took the same amount we normally do around £900 and only spent £500.  We ate out for every meal, had drinks, hired a scooter for the week, bought clothes, had a fantastic holiday.  So the money we saved is paying for this trip.  We rang Philip the other night to confirm the date we will be arriving and just speaking to him, brought everything back.  It was like talking to an old friend.  5 weeks on monday to go.  cannot wait.

Hiya Smiffy, yes it will soon be here, then it will be months before we can go back.  We usually go to lake district or something in April but I want to go to Arillas, we paid more for a weeks holiday in lakes than we did for a week in Arillas, so there really is no contest.  It's just that we take the dog when we go in England and he loves it.  Just had great idea, now I know how safe Arillas is, billy can take the dog and i'll come to Arillas, haha, or better still billy can go to the lakes and i'll come to Arillas with the dog!

Sounds like a fantastic plan!!

The winter months, once the holiday season is over, they are tough, you just want them over with, but the dream of returning to Arillas keeps you going and this site does too!

Savour every moment in September and the memories will help you along til next year :-) !

Blimey!  We certainly won't be able to afford more than about £400-£500 for the week for the 2 of us so I guess we're going to have to be a bit thrifty and seek out the cheaper places to eat etc!

smoosh, the captains table and vivalis we found to be the cheapest, around 26-30 euros for 2 3 course meals, plenty of wine and beer.  We spent £500 because we had it to spend, i'm sure you will manage easily on what you take.

I'm finding out Arillas is, (despite being a more select resort) a place that suits people on a budget like myself.

We're self catering, but that will be for breakfasts.

We'll dine out to give my wife a break.  ;-)

I'm finding out a number of 'wallet friendly' places, you will as well.  :-)

James W, while I understand you may have had experience of people exaggerating how much they spend, it's also worth noting that most people on this forum are good honest people giving honest opinions and views on their holidays.

Devils advocate here.
I was once asked, by a friend in England, how much I spent on holiday. I can't remember the figure I gave him but included the cost of bringing cigarettes and alcohol home. I used to bring back 2600 for me, each trip, and Mrs Egg 1800, plus 2 Drambuies and 3 whiskys. - And a couple of bottles Kourtaki if any space left.
"Surely" he said, " That's not part of your holiday costs?"
i suppose he's right but we budgeted for it on each holiday.
Maybe exaggeration is the wrong word but,if I had originally answered this post,I could have easily added 800 euros to the "holiday cost"
( 800 euros on cigs & booze - What a frightening realisation!! )

We usually average about 100 euros a day and there are three of us, including a teenage daughter ! Some days we underspend and carry it over. We usually go to the bakery for breakfast, snack & a beer for lunch and one of the excellent tavernas in Arillas for our evening meal. There is the snack bar and pizza place that are pretty cheap and there is some Greek stuff on the menu if my memory serves me right.
 We don't buy duty free as we don't smoke and find the alcohol isn't much cheaper than at home and you have got the hassle of getting it back in one piece.
 Then there is whatever you want to buy in the way of gifts. We always used to get souvenirs of our holidays but the house was becoming a bit cluttered so we don't even do that anymore !
We do like to have a nightcap @ the Rainbow ( a few actually) but that won't break the bank !

Think you have it just about correct..100 euros a day is ample ,although there are only two of us,we do tend to be in and out of bars & taverna`s all day,...(mostly in )
I regret to say,...And  do eat out every evening..but what better way to wihile away the lazy afternoons than sat in a Taverna gazing out to sea with a cool drink ,drink,drink....  (http://www.33smiley.com/smiley/emotions/16.gif)

None taken James we may and often "way" over- exaggerate our expenditure! This, in part, has been owing to the fact that we have had to visit Sidari to find a service till in the past. Now that there is one in Arillas we will probably take less. We ALWAYS bring lots of cash home.

Thanks for the replies everyone, was just starting to worry a bit!  We haven't really run out of money on previous holidays in other countries and taken about the same.  We don't smoke or particularly drink (not spirits anyway, just beer and wine) so we probably won't end up buying any duty free to take home.

We're staying at the Akti Arillas on a bed and breakfast basis so we'll just have to sort out lunch and dinner and drinks etc.  I think we should be ok.

Can't wait now!  (even though my Mum had a worry about us going to Corfu yesterday as she said apparently it's one of the most dangerous airports to land it!)  ;)

There might be a photo of it on this site.  I was worried when we first flew to Corfu hearing stories about the landing... it is between two bits of water .... but I just think well, the pilot will be careful he wants to get home after all..  Its nothing to worry about but they do have to put the brakes on a bit sharpish.  The worst part is picking up your bags of the carousel.. ;)

Yeah we were a bit worried about picking up our luggage with all the losses the airlines have had lately.  We don't really pack enough to have a suitcase each so we tend to share one - if we lose that we've had it!

Lindy P -Can't take 3200 cigs back in hand luggage.

On the subject of money - Allow 15 euros a day per adult, and 12 euros a day per child , for meals etc. Plus hire car if reqd at 25 euros a day.
You shouldn't go too wrong on these figures, unless everybody eats breakfast out and has big lunches and has starters/desserts in the evening.

smoosh, like you, we don't smoke. With regards to imbibing, we're light on that, except for 'Adams Ale' which we consume a lot of.   :-)

We're on self-catering, so Eggy's estimation with regards to the amount of daily expenditure, will no doubt ease your mind (as well as wallet) It has mine.  :-)

I feel a bit awkward walking around with a big bulge in my shorts.

I've just increased your expenditure! - Typing error on my last post.
Should be allow 25 euros per adult. - But that does include a few English breakfasts in the morning. This was a maximum figure for us. It generally came in at about 40 euros for both of us per day.- We bought items such as coffee/butter/Tea bags with us.
Whenever I felt the need for an English breakfast we shared it.
Mrs Egg had an extra cup of coffee and had my fruit juice, toast and jam.
( 6.5 euros max for both)

To keep the tone of the conversation low girls I've just got to tell you about the giggle my sis and I had last year.  Just as we were going into Ina's shop a large, late middle-aged chap slathered in sun oil was leaving, wearing nothing but tiny yellow speedos.  He had an enormous belly and what looked like a full English breakfast for four stuffed down his trunks!!  Yeuch..it was shock, horror, embarrasment and a giggle all at the same time!(http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sick/sick0006.gif) (http://search.orange.co.uk/all?q=site%3Awww.arlingtonhotelgroup.co.uk+norfolk)

I am getting very, very worried about Eileen, first wallets in shorts, and now full english breakfasts in tiny yellow speedo trunks. Lets face it, you cant get a decent meal inside a pair of tiny yellow speedo trunks.

Lindypops...our faces registered shock at first, my sis and I just stared at each other in horror then of course the laughing started...we still laugh about it!!!

I should've said Terry that the chap being so big his speedos were tiny on him, but they obviously were made of lycra...soooo.....the weight of his full english brekkie stretched them down to his....well now you know why a year on we still talk about it!!!  (I think maybe that was just a wee bit too much information there!)

Mazz, you will be fine in Arillas then... ;-)

we saw something quite funny while waiting at some traffic lights up in the mountains. A family leaving a cafe returning to their car, a womans skirt blew completely up over her face to reveal her complete bottom half. It took her ages to get it back down as it was quite breezy. It was made more funny as we were in an open top car and we could't hold our sniggers, we collapsed with laughter once they drove off !
