Title: ATM Machine
Post by: Deb on July 05, 2007, 08:04:30 PM
Have got one of those American Express Travellers Cheque Card and was wondering if it can be used in the ATM in the village.  Apparently it has to be either Alpha Bank or Dios (not sure of the spelling of this one).

Can anyone help?

Not sure about the Arillas ATM. If it's Alpha Bank then the nearest place is Acharavi.
(About 30 minutes drive)
If I'm in Arillas tomorrow I'll try and find out.

I think Arillas could use an ATM, evertime I wanted cash from an ATM I had to either visit Sidari or Agros.

there is an ATM in Arillas (right at the Marina Hotel and past Olgas Travel.) We had quite a few problems with it (sometimes it is empty or just temperamental) but other people we knew seemed to have more luck with it. If you get stuck Olgas Travel can give you some cash (with commission of course) not ideal but good in an emergency.

In the 3 weeks we were there, we had no problems at the ATM. I got cash out every other day.

Does anyone know how much you can take out of the ATM on a Nationwide card in any one transaction, or per day? I know the limit is £300 a day here so assume it is the equivalent in Arillas?

Sandy
I think the screen display goes up to, either 360 euros, or 480 euros with a default setting for any other amount. We set our maximum rate on the "Flex Card" to £200 so it won't let us take more than 280 euros. Tried higher once and it spat the card back at me. So I think it's fairly close to the £300 max as at home.

Thanks Eggy. We have a few bills to pay over there this time and thought this might be the best way of transferring relatively small (!) amounts of money.

Good Idea Sandy.
This Nationwide account is working very well for us. Over the last 10 weeks we haven't had lower than 1.475.
When you're over perhaps we can have a chat about EKA/Tax?

I don't know how they set limits for withdrawals, but the machine would only give me 160 euros in a single transaction. Hence my frequent visits!!!

Maggie
Maybe check with your bank, who issued the card, and see if they have a maximum daily amount on it. It could be the reason.
Alpha Bank has just issed us with 2 cards and we had to specify a max amount per day for each card.

I was able to take 280 euros out with Halifax card, this isn't far off the £200 daily allowance at home. Just looked at my bank statement and the bank charge was £1.50, not too bad.

I used this several times during my stay in Arillas recently. I took out 300 euros each time and I think the rate was 1.48. I'm with Nationwide with no charges so that has to be the best way of doing things. However, a word of caution....don't rely solely on the ATM...it was out of order most of the day on 16 August, but they did manage to fix it by the next day. Maybe it ran out of money?

I reckon you emptied it Sandy.  ;-)

Because we're on Self-Catering, 300 Euros is what we're taking between us for the week.  :-)

Just to justify the installation of the ATM in Arillas, I used it whilst there.

I'll find out what the rate and charges were later  ;-)

I've got that much for the first few days.
By the time you have been to the "supermarket and bought water, milk, bread, honey, Mythos, Metaxa and ouzo there is a big slice gone. And that is on the day I arrive!!

ps forgot the red wine.

Being from a Scottish background,  (Och Aye The Noo)

I learned to be thrifty. ( Not mean)  ;-)

I went to the Mini-Market near the Bakery. The family there had a good selection of goods, at reasonable prices.

The local Arillas Wine sold there was attractively priced, and quite palatable.
I showed a bottle I just bought to Heidi and EEG, as I was walking back to the apartment.

I bought 4 times 5 litres of water for 1.75 Euros each whilst we were there.

Was it just a liquid diet James or did you eat as well?

I have just joined Nationwide for that exact reason!

So come on....How many times has it run out of money?

Not everytime I've used it but that's maybe only a once a month average.

Hi everyone,
We've been to Arillas a couple of times but not since the ATM was installed. Going back end of next week and was wondering how reliable the ATM is, does it break down regularly, how often is it filled, etc. Appreciate any recent information.
Thanks, Dai

The ATM machine is very well but shouts at me every time I walk past it!

It says:- "Unless you have a Nationwide account change your money locally!"

( So far, touch wood , It has never let us down - Including last Winter )

Hi again everyone!, got back two days ago after a great week in arillas... great weather, good accom (Mathraki) and mostly good food....

My wife's atm card worked once, then was rejected for the rest of the week as was mine.... Tried to contact my banker via phone and text.., no luck.....

result -  virtually no cash for the week and having to ask each establishment if they would take Visa before we could even think of eating there....

MY STRONGEST ADVICE.... take Euros and travellers cheques...

I shall be having VERY strong words with my bank tomorrow!

Cant believe you are back already!  Just goes to show I AM FAR TOO BUSY HERE!  Really though, glad you had a good time..

I cant believe you had all that trouble with the ATM machine.  There must have been a lot of people using it when you were there I reckon.  That would put me in a right panic not having any cash... it would put a right damper on the whole holiday... there has got to be something done about that as it seems to have happened a few times with others having trouble with their banks.  Either too good a security system or the whole thing needs revamping... computers you either love them or hate them!

So, you would recommend the Mathraki then?  and what about the food (mostly good), what happened then or will that be controversial?
