We had a day this year when it was really overcast.  Sat out in it all day with not much suntan lotion on and that was the day we got sun burnt - so be careful just because the sun isn't out does not mean you wont catch the sun!! ;)

It has been extremely hot there the last couple of weeks.  Mike sat in the shade all the time either under the umbrella or a tree and still got brown.  When it was a bit cloudy one day we walked to Afionas and my forehead still got burnt. It is very deceiving so be careful.

6:45 here in the evening at showing 34.7 on the balcony. Sue's right - You're liable to start burning without even knowing it. Especially with that fine Arillas breeze you can get on the beach.

We havent been to Greece this year yet, still waiting for a completion date to move to Corfu to live.  Are there any comments from those of you who have, to the item in the Sunday papers which make out that Greece is becoming tropical rather than mediterranean?

Kes
That's the problem here at the moment. The first week we arrived I think we had 2 very small showers. Over & done in the blink of an eye. Now 10,weeks in and that's all we've had. It's very hard for the working people of Arillas and indeed all Corfu. They want everyone on holiday to have good weather. 2 weeks good weather plus a good place to be in and people want to come back. As you know Arillas puts their customers on the top of their priority list. Thing is, not every body goes away for the same 2 weeks so 4/5 months hot weather pleases all their customers.
But, surrounded by Agricultural land, as we are, owners are watering plots, digging & picking at 06:30. By 10:30 they have to stop work. You don't see them again until the temperature drops which is about 8pm. Then they're out there for another 2 hours.
Very hard work. Builders too. Try, not only working in late morning temperatures of 30 deg but also going up & down ladders, mixing cement which is drying before you get a chance to use it. Don't even think about painting! - Put the brush down & 2 mins later it's rock hard.
I never used to understand why most Greeks sleep in the afternoon. Being here on 2 week stints, it was never too hot for me. Now, all day & every day I can understand why they work to a different rota than England. We're learning to adapt but 35 deg, showing outside at the mo, doesn't give me the same sparkle as it used to.
But... Like all Arillas we don't wish rain on anyones holiday. Corfiots will suffer and still smile and still be genuinely friendly.
(Even the lady tending her veggies this morning, wearing more clothes than I wear in the winter, found the time to call in and present us with a selection of her crop.
Sweetcorn. peppers, Aubergines, Peppers, 3 cucumbers and Tomatoes)
Sorry folks - Rambled on here - 3:15 in the afternoon - I sleep or I type.
WHO SAID GO TO BED THEN???
Cheers

I say keep typing Eggy - i love reading your posts.
How nice being brought some veg by the locals. They seem to be very thoughtful. The local ladies do seem to wear alot of clothes and they are always black!  They never look hot or bothered like us!! ;)

Where i work i speak to alot of French and Italians and they work some funny hours during July and August also!!

The waiter at the Seabreeze just said "oh well, never mind" when we said it was lovely for us but difficult for them when it was so hot.  Didnt seem bothered at all about not having much rain since April, as if they will get by somehow, very laid back...  in the UK we have flooding, no water and its a total disaster, when it snows the trains stop, when it rains the drains cant cope with it, when its hot for two days on the trot (do you remember those days) we have a hosepipe ban... we do get our knickers in a twist!  I remember in the Uk when we had rationed petrol and we had to get our water from a standpipe in the 70's, anyone remember that?  also, loo roll shortage (perish the thought), milk and bread... I think the Greeks would just take it in their stride and come up with something else (sorry drifted off topic a bit).

I also wondered why the women wore so many clothes too.  We walk around wearing hardly anything, I wonder what they must think... on our walk to Afionas we passed a lady who had such thick woolly tights on and cardigan etc. carrying all her shopping on her head and under her arm. All we carried  was a bottle of water!

A bit too hot for me ;)  It would definately have to be a day on the beach rather than at the pool - far to hot i would imagine.

Post by: Sandy x on July 24, 2007, 01:05:43 PM
I'm getting just a bit worried about that heat. Even by my standards 105 degrees is HOT and after the dismal "summer" here it will be more difficult to adapt. I usually spend the whole day on the beach but don't think I'll survive if this heatwave goes on!

Yesterday the 24th July 2007 it was the hotest day that my parrents can remember.!
The thermometer hit the 45 degrees at 15:30 .
It has been 36 degrees under my vines outside the taverna which was a new reccord since I have started to observe my weather station.
We had an idea for keeping our customers cool by providing "Topless Service"
which was a good touch for the evening.

Forgot to say this servise is after midnight and is extra charged  ;)

We have a fireman as a neighbour. No one is allowed to have bonfires this time of year but some do. If they get called out the person responsible faces a fine. Any lighted cig flipped from a car, in this heat, can do a lot of damage as well. It's all kept low key but it is a concern especially the power supply. Air conditioning working non stop all over the place. One helluva drain on electricity usage.
We had 5 power cuts the other day, in one day, but only 2/3 mins each time. I am amazed that the water hasn't been cut off yet. It is not unknown to be without water for a day or two. That's why a lot of people have water tanks to tide them over.
We have a 2000 ltr back up tank here which. if water is cut off, would last about a week.
( It's even warm water coming out the cold tap!)

The weather has this summer been terrible, lots of rain and vind, About 17-22 C. So I look forward to better conditions in arillas. But I have to say that +40C is more than prefers. So to cold in DK, and to hot in Arillas. They’re fore my question about the heat wave.

Just a warning to anyone who's visiting Arillas (or indeed anywhere in Greece at the moment it would seem..)

Please please do NOT underestimate the power of the sun, especially on a fair northern-European complexion as many Brits have.  We were stupid enough to spend a short time on the beach last Monday (23rd July) - as Dimitris mentioned above, it's been extremely hot recently.  There was a slight breeze, which masked the heat, and it was only when I went for an ice-cream that I realised quite how stifling it was.  We got off the beach, but too late..

By then the damage was done.  I spent most of the rest of the week looking like a piece of nougat - pink/white/pink  and my forehead looked like a Jersey Royal potato, it peeled within 3 days.

Joking aside, please be careful.

Matt

I have just read MattB's post and I can only reiterate what he has said.

I had to go to the doctors,to have my ears checked, three days before we went to Arillas on July 2nd. While checking me he had a second look at my face and told me that I had skin cancer. Luckily it was one of the least dangerous of cancers, Basal cell carcinoma, but it still came as a shock. It still means I will have to have it removed and it could leave scaring on my face depending on how deep it is.

Needless to say, that I did not sun bathe at all, and I never will again. In fact it made me realise that we all gamble when sun bathing because  we think it will never happen to us ( get cancer), but I am proof that it does.

BE VERY CAREFUL AND MAKE EXTRA SURE THAT YOUR CHILDREN ARE COVERED.

Matt & Terry,

Sensible advice from both of you. Sorry to hear about your 'Jersey Royal'  Matt, I think most of us have made the same mistake at one time or another.  I remember years ago my son calling me a Tomato Face...well that was the one and only time because from then onwards I have dolloped on the high factor and wear a sun hat!

Terry what a shock that must have been for you, thank you for sharing your upsetting news and warning us...we do take our good health for granted.

Good advise. As a red head with fair skin I use factor 50 and sit most of the time in the shade. I also wear my silly hat even when swimming. People may think I look silly but I know how easy I burn. If I was clever and knew how to do it I would give you all a laugh and post a picture of me in the "silly hat"
After a week I still came home with a slight colour without burning or feeling uncomfortable.

Benita,

We all need cheering up, and I think your photo could do the trick. Have a look at Eileen's post about displaying photographs.

Eileen,

After reading MattB's post I thought that I needed to pass on my "news", because "it" does happen. My neighbour had three Basal cell carcinoma's removed yesterday.

I am as guilty as anyone to think that it is nice to return from holiday with a nice tan, but it is not worth the risk.

Terry

Having a completely blonde family, I have always been extra paranoid about keeping them well protected.  I always use waterproof 30+ protection and they always have t shirts on, in the pool and out of it.  That said, they always catch it but thankfully have never burned.  I for one think that someone who is chocolate brown through tanning just doesnt look nice any more.  You just think of all the risks they are taking.  This doesn't. however, mean that I wont be hoping for a tan but it will be done as safely as possible. (contradiction in terms there!)

We saw a guy on the beach last month, he was so brown I had to check out whether it was natural or not.  He was def. european by his blonde/grey hair.  It didnt really look good as he was sooooo tanned.  More like a pepporoni stick colour and it looked very unhealthy.  There is being tanned and being overdone I thought.  Fake stuff is much safer after all.

Weather Today.
A very windy beach, waves a bit choppy. Had coffee at Amnos this morning about 9am and not a lot of activity on the beach. Probably a "sandblasting" day ahead.
Quite breezy inland too. Currently 26 deg .
All in all - It's a very good day. Find a nice spot away from the wind and relax in a civilised temperature.

Haha BG that really made me laugh!  We saw a man last year on the beach who didn't have a thong so he had made his own from speedos and sunbathed standing up!!  His bum looked like a leather handbag - my son and I still giggle about this and I have the picture on my phone to show people!!

Stop it!!!! I cant stop laughing....

We were in Elounda Crete some years ago, at the harbour having a nice ice cream when a brown streak ran past.  It was a lady of about 80+, well she could have been younger but with all the sun tan aging you dont know.  She was exceptionally thin, soooo brown in a bikini jogging very slowly with a bum bag on...  Needless to say it wasnt a good sight especially when eating and that image will always be with us.

We laughed the other day watching Mr Bean changing his swimming trunks on UTube, one of my favourites!

Just catching up with all I've missed on the forum (as anoraks do Dimitris......) This post is a year old but is just as interesting as yesterday.

The weather in Arillas is like a woman. Searing hot one day but just as you relax and get used to it she changes into a storm, a tornado and has you running for shelter. Then the joy of making up and getting back to normal. The season wears on and she gets a bit cooler. She must be bored - what will be next? Well, you won't have to wait long. The boss has many things up her sleeve. Suddenly the sun comes out and she suggests a long swim in the sea. Then it rains and you suggest a warm bar and a few drinks....

Arillas weather is far better and more alluring than Rhodes where it is just hot and sunny 360 out of 365 days.

Don't get me wrong - I have spent my whole life so far with her, and will spend all the rest. You can work out what I mean.

Phil who is missing the place and going slowly mad....
