Don't forget that the new traffic laws regarding seat belts, traffic offences and drink driving come into force on Friday June 1st. The Greek Police will be out in force to apply the new penalties. Myself I think this might be a good thing for all of us seeing that they already apply here. Viv

Are they implementing wearing crash helmets too ?

I have always worn a seatbelt in Corfu. I dont feel safe not wearing one now!
Last year they gave us crash helmets but didn't insist that you wore them. I guess that will be different now!

When we hired a bike, we were given helmets, but they said we didn't have to wear them if we were travelling on the little roads. However they said, if we were going further than Sidari, on the big ? road, then we should wear them, or risk being stopped if we were seen by the police.

I was amazed to see a RADAR gun when we visited recently, you see the signs telling you to watch your speed, but I'm not used to seeing them actively working on Corfu. It's quite a relief really, they are there for our safety in the end.

That is a surprise. Up until a few years ago you were lucky if you saw a policeman the whole time we were there!
It is a relief as some of the roads are quite scary.

I cant say I haven't really taken any notice of anyone wearing crash helmets on Corfu, on Crete you have to though. They stop anyone who isnt wearing one. Most of the locals there didnt, the tourists dont like to take any chances. As for seat belts, it becomes such a habit now I do it automatically and feel "naked" if I dont buckle up so I would def. do it in Greece. The roads are so scary, I had being so close to the edge high up.

Every person i saw who had hired a moped or motorbike were wearing their helmets, if i had hired one i would most definitely wear the helmet, just a stone in your path as youre pulling away could topple you off the bike and you could bang your head, not worth taking the risk.

there was an accident between a moped and a van right outside the rainbow last week, sound of crash was sickening, rider was not wearing crash helmet and recieved nasty cut too head amongst other injuries- although could have been a lot worse
he limped in next day (still feeling dizzy) to check that the wall outside rainbow was ok - spiros replied " don't worry about our blaaady wall worry about your blaaady 'ead!"

I don't know if they are required by law, but they are usually readily available when hiring a car. Arillas car hire definitely has them as Theo gave us one for Liam a couple of weeks ago.

Having worked two summers in the Car Hire game in Corfu (although a decade ago) we were always advised to wear seatbelts law or not and the boosters seats for the little ones. You can get them from carhire companies, but they might not be quite the same standard as they are here.

I don't know and therfore cannot comment on other car hire companies in Corfu, but the booster seat that was given to us by Arillas Car hire was the same as available here in the U.K. EEG you are right to remind us that car safety seats etc should be checked to make sure that they comply with EEC standards, that they are in good condition and appropriate for the age of child.

A few days ago, Arillas was cordoned off by the police - 8 in all!! Perry was lucky to miss them as his bike breaks most laws. The police do seem to be taking it seriousy, although I'm no sure that the locals do yet.

Does this mean it is safe to use pedestrian crossings etc now, will they stop if your crossing over???? Sorry shouldnt poke fun but it kind of added to going on holiday, still think Spain is worse!!!

Actually thinking about it I think my dads the worse, he constatly shouts about other drivers while cutting people up and running over cyclists!!!

Does anybody know if the seat belt law applies to rear seat passengers as well?

As far as I'm aware, everyone should have a seatbelt on. Our taxi driver told us to put them on.
