Title: Exchange Rate
Post by: Eggy on February 02, 2007, 09:14:56 PM
Keep an eye on the Euro, Folks. It's hovering at e1.517 at Bank Rate and about e1.46 at Tourist.
Maybe I'm wrong but I think it was about e1.40 this time last year.

why not just take a few euros for what you need, then just withdraw euros from your bank a/c with your card at a cashpoint,i took about £500 worth of euros with me,and withdrew extra  with my nationwide flex account card last year and got a better exchange rate than tourist rates, and no transaction charge either

Try further down this topic and the nearest ATM is mentioned there.  I added this some time ago as I had read it on Corfu Agni.

My wife got a good deal this morning.

We went to the local Currency Exchange and she got 150 Euros for £100, that's er.... ummm.....  1.5 Euros to £1

How did she get such a good rate?

I bought 300 for for 1.43/£ and re-sold them to her, that's how.  ;-)

I do this sort of thing every time.

When in Bulgaria I did a similar thing in our hotel lobby, but another holidaymaker thought I was a private Currency Exchanger, and was interested at getting such a good rate from me.

I had to inform her what I was doing, and directed her to the 'Official' Money Changer.  She was a bit miffed.   :-)

James
Bring a pen & paper and explain this one to me. If you buy at e1.43 and sell at e1.5 are you not on a loser? Or am I looking at it the wrong way?
I seem to remember the plane, on the way home, saying you can use your euros up and offering an exchange greater than the resort. ( Pay in £'s and it was cheaper)
( It's e1.459 today by the way )

Hi Neill.
I only do this sort of thing to my wife. (I'd be broke in no time otherwise)
The first time I did it, she had to take a while to work it out.  :-)

I may lose on the deal initially, but she returns the favour in kind   ;-)

September 6th you will see that the exchange was e1.464.
Today it's only e1.417.

So £500 at Sept got you e732 and now gets you e708.
Around £17 or £3.40 lower per £100 changed before commission. ( £3.32 after )

Thats one helluva drop over the last 6 weeks and obviously reflects end of season.

Anyone know what it is in England today?

Neil

its about 1.36

Mick  :-(

Title: Re: Exchange Rate
Post by: Eggy on October 19, 2007, 06:33:30 PM
Thanks Mick
so £500  at e1.36 is 667 euros
and £500 at e1.41 is 691 euros.
( After 2% commision )
About £ 3.40 per £100 if you can bring commission free t/c's or cash with you.

Doesn't sound a lot but if you're flight only and pay for your appt when here and get a car for a week and take cigs home, plus meals , then I make that a conservative saving of about £30.
( If you had got them at e1.467, 6 weeks ago, you would have made a total of £65 )

All figures based on expenditure of £900. The mind boggles.
Anybody want to double check figures. I'm having a Terry W moment here.

At the moment the Post Office is doing a slightly higher rate if you buy over £500.

Hi Neil.Hope you are keeping well. My husband Steve is the person people ask if he is Eggy. Obviously that is people that dont already know you. We met a few timea at the Brouklis this year.

Lisa & Steve
I remember. Didn't I ask if he was Eggy as well? ( Dimitris Idea )
Never seemed to bump into you anywhere else which was a shame really.
I could picture both of us, sat next to each other,at the bar in the Coconut.
( That would really confuse Forum visitors )
Cheers Both

I thought Dimitris put you up to that. We dont tend to go into the coconut , usually have an evening drink at Helens with George. But when we are next over will make an exception and meet in the coconut. We will also eating a bit at the brouklis.
Title: Re: Exchange Rate
Post by: Eggy on October 20, 2007, 06:01:37 PM
I'll look forward to that you two.
But I confess I do tend to stay away from the Coconut at "Sport" weekends. The sport is OK but obviously it's shown to generate extra business. It can get too busy and loud for a lot of people.
I love to talk but hate to shout.

The exchange is still at e1.416. It's a reminder for us people who live here.
Taking a budget of £600 per mnth,for example,from Nationwide 6 weeks ago gave e880
The same budget now only gives us e852. ( Cost of  livings gone up £20 mnth? )

We jumped the gun a bit though and took out cash when it was around e1.51 about June then paid it into our Greek Bank. No financial wizardy here - just lucky.
( Anyone thinking about a permanent move should take this into account )

This is in today's Guardian. It makes you think about the cost of a holiday in the summer and I think we will all have to watch the exchange rate very carefully.

"Get your holiday euros now because the pound is about to be grounded"

You can read it here  -

What is going on today the rate is 1.2749 tourist rate. What is the rate out there? pound and chq? Could be we will be counting our pennies for the first time in an age! Saving here boss!

I have a feeling that we will have less to spend this year and this will be bad for the Arillas businesses as well. We cant do much about it except be happy that we are spending in a place we love.
Title: Re: Exchange Rate
Post by: Eggy on January 08, 2008, 10:11:32 AM
Very worrying stuff this and as soon as we can we'll get to the Bank and check the exchange. We all know it tends to go up around April/May time but if it's this low now we could only be looking at 1.4 tourist about that time.

I'm not sure that's right Eggy. I'm sure I've always found the exchange rate is better at this time of year...in fact I used to change money in January for the summer....because it gets worse as the season goes on.
Title: Re: Exchange Rate
Post by: Eggy on January 08, 2008, 05:22:39 PM
Hi Sandy
I'll keep an eye on it but we never used to transfer money over around Jan / Feb because of the poor Bank rate.  End March / April used to be good, I think and in June last year we got a better exchange on the cashpoint in Arillas than money we transferred over around April. ( Maybe Bank rate is more variable than Tourist Rate ? )

Let me know when it's on the way up please.
Cheers

We too thought rates dropped as the season opened but never worried as we always got a better rate at the marina, last year we also tested the a.t.m. and were pleased with the rate. Just ot to swallow hard, save and hope the banks grow some extremities!

This exchange rate is a small crippler at the mo.

Just doing the sums, e1000 per month in June cost us £669 and now it costs £740.
Not a major problem here as we take money from our Greek account which we transferred over at a very good rate but at some point we need to move some more.
( Born worrier - That's me !! )
Keep yer eye on it for us Sandy and all.

Hi Eggy.
The Euro rate seems to be getting worse everyday.
Riggers..

I agree Eggy....very worrying for us all and also the good people of Arillas as we will effectively have "less" to spend there with the exchange rate being so poor.

Just over 125 today! Apparentlely could go lower! If they keep putting up our bills will not be able to save alot this year so hurting all round.
