Well I am 40 something and my hubby a bit more!  We enjoy strolling out for a meal at night, watching the sunset and enjoying the Greek pace of life.  We can highly recommend Brouklis, the Spit Roast is wonderful as are all the home-cooked dishes.  Also Thalassa is lovely and the food at the Marina is very nice too.  Their son is good to watch at Greek Night on a Saturday, amazing dancer.  When we stayed at the Kaloudis we used to have a swim first thing then not feel too guilty when odering their lovely breakfast.  Really nice.  Then we used to stroll down to the supermarket for reading material (there is a nice place for breakfast there too - Helens) and then chill on the beach.  If feeling very energetic some nice walks to neighbouring resorts but if not just a stroll for lunch at one of the many nice tavernas and then more sunbathing!  Good fun to hire a quad bike and if you do then Afionas Village is a must.  Call at Dionysos Taverna for lunch with the best view in the world.  Great people and great places at night, lots happening at Kaloudis but quieter spots for a romantic evening depending upon what you want!  You will just love Arillas.  Poppy and Spiros have a good bar at the Bardis Sun (opposite end to you but not far) and they arrange trips to Mon Amour Restaurant in Kavadades which is authentic greek and fantastic - or you can make your own way there of course.  Hope that helps :)

I found that interesting reading too... we are staying at the Bardis next June and wondered where Kavadades was.  Sounds good.  Everywhere to eat is good in Arillas, but we didnt lilke the Chinese much though, we felt like a bit of a change towards the end of the fortnight and wished we hadnt bothered, as it took too long to come to the table and was overpriced for what it was.  Otherwise everything else was great especially the full english breakfast at the Captains after an early morning walk.

hello Neil,
my advise would be try everywhere you can, food in Arillas is very good so it depends on what you fancy that day.As for drink my favorite is Amstel, but others like Mythos beer.again just try and see what takes your fancy, prices are not bad so you will not lose a fortune if you dont like something,go for it and enjoy

For those of you asking how far it is to Kavadades,  I would think it must be about 3 kilometres.  It took me about 40 minutes to walk so is Ok in the day time but I would not reccomend it at night.  The thing to do is ring them ( I listed the phone number on a previous message) and they will come and fetch you and bring you back when you are ready all free of charge!!!  Brilliant Greek hospitality and fantastic value for money.  Go on a Saturday night when they have their spit roast lamb, pork and chicken. Fantastic!!!
Regards John

My husband and I stayed in Arilas for two weeks from July 24 and we fell in love with the place and the people.

The standard of food was very high, but our favourite places were the Brouklis, Horizon, Thassalas.

The service at the Brouklis is very friendly and personal and the food is wonderful.

Dimitris, who runs the restaurant is lovely and looks like Tom Cruise (well, thought I should let all you Tom Cruise fans in on the secret). However, I do hear he is spoken for - what a shame...

Hope to see you next year Dimitris, but that all depends on whether we can get accommodation!

All the best,

Adele

I have to disagree with the Tom Cruise look alike - when we first met Dimitris 9 years ago my first reaction when we met him was a young Richard Gere - and I still stick with that one.

We only went to Brouklis once on our recent trip to Arillas and wasn't sure who was Dimitris but now you mention the young Richard Gere I realise ! We had agreat time and I loved the sardines at Brouklis but we just had to eat sample every restaurant .

Although like everyone one day we will return because the place was so idyllic ,so unspoilt. Although next year we have already booked Skiathos so may be 2008.

Sorry to waffle but we also had agreat meal in San Stefanos at the Olive Tree I think that's what it's called. Apparently Dimitris' cousins place.

Thanks to all the lovely people of Arillas lets hope it never ever ends up like Sidari !

Cheers Kat66

Funnily enough we frequented the Captains Table most nights with occasional visits to the Thassalo and Sea Breeze.  We did visit Brouklis a couple of times but as you said it was busy and is very popular.  The Captains table was the nearest restaurant from where we were staying at the Galini so it was convenient.  Mike and Angela the maitre D and Angela were always there with a smile and Angela would mercilessly be teased by my other half.  Their full english breakfasts still make our mouth water (a nice treat after a long walk), the very "sinful" fried bread melted in your mouth.  I am glad you recommended it too.

Best places we found to eat were Brouklis (but v busy and couldn't get seat most nights), Arillas Inn and Costas on the Beach.
For a quick tasty snack The Grill Room next to the Coconut/ Malibu Bars does a delicious Gyros Kebab for 2.5 or 3.5 Euros. It was stuffed full with pork/ salad/ tsakziki and chips.

Hi my name is Margaret, and Ive been to Kaloudis studios many times. The owners are great people and are now friends of mine. The best place to eat is a small snack bar in the village, nedt door to the Malibu Bar. although it says Snack Bar, they serve really excellent meals, and the breakfasts are to die for, very cheap, too. The best place to drink is a small taverna. If you walk up the road just past the Coconut bar, then the Malibu bar, you will see a road on your left, go up there and not very far up is a small taverna run by a greek family.  Not many people go (me and Kevin were the only ones there every night!!). You cant miss it as they have written Pizza Hut on the pillars!! Drinks very very cheap - dont be fooled by the Malibu offering 3 drinks for the price of two, this place is much much cheaper (1 euro for a coffee or ouzo for example!!).
You are very lucky to be going to Arillas, we came back 1 week ago and I'm still depressed now!!! I do hope you have a lovely time.  Margaret and Kevin

We went into the snack bar next to the Malibu.  We fancied egg and chips of all things (I know, I know its not very Greek ~ but I never had mashed potato in Greece before until I came to Arillas!)  after coming off the beach and it was lovely!  I dont know what they feed the chickens but the eggs taste great in Arillas.  We also passed the little taverna I think you are talking about... is it next door to the little boutique as you go up the hill before the bakers on the bend.  We did wonder about going in as the drinks seemed very cheap but it looked a bit dead and wasnt sure if they were opened or not.  Do they do food, if so did you try any?  Might give that a go next year!

Just try wherever takes your fancy, I don't think you can go wrong anywhere although our favourites had to be The Brouklis,Thalassa,Kostas

We had excellent gyros at the Steki snack bar, cheap and very tasty. Followed by cheescake & can also recommend the ice cream.

Brouklis, their specials are to die for, so says my teenage daughter. She thought Dimitri was a James bond lookalike/soundalike !

Portofina do an excellent pasdisada among other things we went there on our first night.

Rainbow do a mean giant beans, AND BILLY DOES A LOVELY HOT CHOCOLATE ! Spiro has now heard of Tia Maria & Guiness !!!

Kostas on the beach, the food was very nice but my feeling was that it was very buisness like and small portions.

Captains was only visited by us on one occasion and my dish was full of green beans and swimming in red olive oil. One of the others where we were stayin loved it. All I can say is you can't really judge on one visit but I don't think it was my cup of T.

We will certainly be back in Arillas to try a few more tavernas next year.

Diane

I love giant beans, even the green beans if they are cooked nicely.  Hubby loves meatballs, as they are so light and fluffy (his words) and courgette balls..  I love stuffed courgette flowers but cant seem to find them in Corfu, we had them in Samos one time.  Not too keen on just plain grilled squid, prefer kalimari which I had in the Thassalo, very nice!  The fish restaurant on the opposite side of the 'circle' to Brouklis does lovely fish meals, large portions of mixed fish (mind the bones though) and dessert was thrown in too,(not literally of course) and the Pastitsio at the Captains, well it could feed three and is gorgeous as is their Moussaka (which I wasnt a big fan of but am now).  OOh!  cant wait to try it all again ~ might get out the recipe books!

Have a great time and if there are any new recipes on the menu come back and tell us please!  My all time favourite thing is to  spend some time in one of their kitchens to see how they make all this yummy food the traditional way.  I love cooking Greek style and try out lots of recipes and one of our favourites is Courgette pie made with Mizithra cheese but I dont think you can get it in Corfu, its a Cretan speciality unless Corfiots have a similar cheese.  Does anyone have any ideas?  I dont think we can bring it back now on the planes now can we?

I think you will need to check with your airline. So much going on, but all for the best, we are told. I too like to try all local dishes etc. Have to say, I really want to try courgette flowers etc. Back to Brouklis, just feed me. You can`t go wrong there. It`s always so ambient, and sooooooooo lovely. I could go on-----------. Mouth`s watering now.Lindypops

Hi  Lindipops & Blondgirl
It is Sunday 5am and I am awake, have made notes and will check everything out.  A bit more ironing and sort out the suitcases, a bit of a kip and probably back for a last look on line tonight before we go. AAAAAAAAAAgh,  The wait is painful

Wacko ~  The Mizithra cheese in Crete is a soft cheese, slightly salty. It might even be goats but it doesnt smell or taste like it.  But it is soft, not like our cottage cheese/cream cheese here tho.  They even eat it with honey.  For the pie you slice courgettes and thinly sliced potatoes and layer it all with the mizithra cheese (herbs added as well) in a filo pastry base and lid.    I shall have to ask my friend in Crete as her son in law actually makes it.  But, if you ever see it in the shops or ask around for me then I can be prepared when I go out there to look too.

Have a great time!

Sue

Can anyone recommend a good place in Arillas to settle down for a few drinks, a good chat, perhaps with some greek music and a friendly atmosphere?  We've tried the Horizon, Coconut Bar and also the Ammos bar (although we felt the service was very slow and the staff we not particularly friendly there).

Hope to hear from you.

It has to be the Brouklas for me too, I also enjoy The Captain opposite the Rainbow Bar, but No 1 in Arillas for a true authentic greek experience, the Brouklas, although getting back to a Bouzouki wouldn't go amiss, then it would be the ultimate experience, and that's coming from a greek!!!!!! ;-)

Arilla Inn is very nice - they play Greek music.  The food and service are excellent and you get a fab view of the sunset too!  Well worth a visit.

just come back from a month in Arillas and out of all the places to eat the place which in our opinion is THE BEST is Captains. For value for money, staff attentiveness and cosy surroundings it is miles ahead of everywhere else. One night after eating Angela had her children there and her father had us all up dancing the wine flowed like a torrential downpure in October and we had the best night of our trip. The set menu was amazing and we all still got a free pud and a liqueur. Highly recommended.See you next year for 12 weeks!!!!!

Hear, Hear!  We loved the food and the hospitality at the Captains!  Always welcoming no matter whether we were too early for breakfast or late in the evening.  Angela was lovely, used to see her on the beach with her girls during the day and in the evening waitressing and also Michaels son was being trained, so cute. Cant wait to go back and see them again next year!

Some of our best times was at Captains. We`ve always had a lovely time @ Captains. They have a good chef, and hygiene is one of the best in Arillas. We`ll go back again, as we have before. Try it.
