Title: General Arillas Info and a Lady with 2 Dogs!
Post by: Joe on July 07, 2006, 04:54:56 PM
Yiassou Everybody.

I was having a quiet day at work and stumbled across this wonderful site devoted to the lovely town of Arillas.

After threatening for many years and being frequent visitors to San Stefanos & Arillas my mum and her boyfriend finally packed all their possessions (and dogs) into the back of a van at the start of the year and started a new life in Corfu which they have never regretted for a second. They actually live in Villa Gabre which is marked on the Arillas map on this site (left at Arourada Taverna and a little up the hill on the road to San Stefanos), it would be wonderful to know if anybody has bumped into my mum Brenda. You can't really miss her she tends to have two very friendly dogs with her everywhere she goes, Sally a Golden Retriever and Ceri, a ridiculously cute Jack Russell. She also is very good friends with Mick & Helen who own the Sundowner Bar in San Stefanos and works in there most nights, if you are ever in Arillas and see a tall dark haired women being harassed by two dogs please say hi, send my regards to and watch the expression of surprise on her face!

My main reason for posting on here is that I work for Thomas Cook Flight Operations and if anyone has any questions regarding flights, accommodation, general info, I would be happy to try and help as Corfu is a lovely island and the welcome afforded by all the locals is truly special, I totally understand why people return time and time again, especially to Arillas and San Stefanos.

I noticed a lot of posts on this forum have been in regard to the transfer times from the airport, some stories seem horrendous. The current projected transfer time from the airport to Arillas is 1h30m, with the coach stopping at Sidari and San Stefanos first. Most coaches on this route are supplied by Arillas travel and a little smaller that the standard counterparts, this helps navigates the streets (especially Avliotes) but more so carries fewer people so the drop offs are quicker. Unfortunately due to its position Arillas will always be the last drop off. I stayed in San Stefanos in June and the transfer there was a little over an hour but the coach was only half full, the best advice I can give is when you book your holidays try and ask for a day/early flight, there is sometimes a small premium for these but the transfer times tend to be shorter as there is less people to move around at that time of day. The congestion at the airport is also a little easier than later in the day, but not by much.

Hoping to get out next weekend for a couple of days if anybody is there and I am staying at the Mirage in September for which I am really looking forward to, I have heard nothing but praise for the Mirage and the people who run it, the food is supposed to be incredible.

Anyway sorry about the long post, pleased to meet you all,

Yammas
Joe

Hello Joe,

I was in Arillas for 4 weeks in May/June, but I never bumped into your mum. I cannot recall seeing the dogs either when passing villa Gabre.  We have a retriever so I know I would definitely have noticed Sally if I had seen her.

I'm back over at the beginning of August so I'll definitely keep my eyes open and say hello.  If not I will definitely see your mum in the Sundowner as I intend to go along there anyway.

Oh and by the way...can you do us Arillas regulars extra-special flight discounts.  (can someone please tell me how to get my smileys back, I wanted to give Joe a cheeky wink there!)

Hello Joe,

We are also staying at the Mirage in September. Hope we are on the same flight as you if the transfer is only approx 1 and 1/2 hours!
However, the chances of this are slim. We travel from Birmingham on Mon 28th Aug, and are very seriously considering a Taxi after our last transfer to Arillas, where the travel firm managed to lose and forget about us at some still unknown place (to us)outside of Sidari! We were asked to disembark from the original Transfer coach at this point and told that a mini-bus would be arriving to take us on to Arillas. When we asked, several times, how long the minibus would take to arrive,(having already had an hour's wait at the airport waiting for another flight to land) the only answer that the transfer rep would give was " they are aware that you are here" After some 50 mins, we suddenly had the idea of looking on the notice board of the reception of the place where we were dumped for a contact tel. number for the tour operator's office. Upon getting through on our mobile, we were asked where we were! Of course, this only added insult to injury! There was only the two of us on this transfer, so your thinking that the quieter the time of day and the less people on the transfer, the quicker, does not always stand up.  I believe that although this was one of the worst instances of bad transfers for this company, there were many other complaints according to the rep .We notice that the accommodation, the Mathraki Studios, which were very nice, are no longer with this tour operator which I hasten to add was not Thomas Cook.
Here's hoping for better start to our holiday this year. Fortunately, we loved Arillas so much that it could not put us off returning.
Perhaps we may overlap in September.
Cheers,
jenny and Chris.

I like the Green Frog!  We saw and heard that exact same one in the river near the Galini!!! Anyway Joe, we had our first visit to Arillas and loved it. We had a coach transfer from the airport (didnt fancy the long coach journey, but apparently it wasnt that bad) but did take the coach back which was great seeing the other places en route and boy were we pleased we stayed in Arillas and at the Galini... nothing but praise for Thomas Cook, good flights, no delays... Very professional! Want to go back..

I'm in Arillas from the 18th September - 25th September, I wanted to come earlier but this was the first availability at the Mirage and I booked at the end of May.

Reading back I agree that transfers are very hit and miss, I personally hate them but to the unseasoned traveller they do add that extra sense of security when arriving in a foreign land. apart from Jenny & Chris's case which sounded truly awful. I don't know if you are aware but when booking a package holiday the transfer is actually a charged extra, for example on most Thomas Cook bookings it £20 per person, it is possible at the time of booking to elect not to pay for this and insist of making your own travel arrangements, this would knock £60 of the price of a booking of three which could be put towards a taxi to and from Arillas which in itself can't be more than this?

As for cheap flights to Corfu, I wish, especially with the fuel surcharges are present. We have a not to well known website www.flythomascook.com (http://www.flythomascook.com) which can have some very good deals. Last week there were some inbounds from £13.99 (plus £40 taxes of course), it’s always hit and miss but if you are flexible there are good deals to have. A little rumour from our pilots is that easyjet may be starting a low-cost Stansted/Corfu route, I can find no proof of this on the internet, but I have found pilots to be a very reliable source if information so fingers crossed.

Hi Joe

What interesting emails!  I am an Arillas fanatic and will be making my sixth visit at the end of July - in less than two years!  I will be eternally grateful to Thomas Cook as the first visit was a last minute booking with them to the Hotel Marvel(lous).  We flew from East Midlans around midnight and the coach transfer took nearly three hours!!  Well we didn't use the coach on arrival again although we did use it a couple of times to return to the airport as this always seemed quicker and also we were good friends with the TC transfer rep who was in Arillas in 2005.  The 40-45 euros for the taxi was mioney well spent!!  On a couple of occasions I tried to cancel the coach transfers, but was told that it was an inclusive cost.

I am retiring in three years and hope to spend May to October in Arillas every year after that so I'm really hoping that some airline manages to come up with cheaper flights before that time.  We booked our flights before Christmas 2005 for this summer, but couldn't find anything cheaper than £230 (with XL).  I really find it hard to believe that no airline has had the courage to offer a cheap flight to Corfu - perhaps the problem lies with the airport as it really could do with expanding.

I was there for just over two weeks during June, but didn't spot your Mother and I certainly would have noticed the dogs!  I will keep an eye out for her when I am there after 28th July.  I could do with talking to her to get some lowdown on the renting of property!

Enjoy your visit to the Mirage - it certainly seems to be proving popular.

HI Dont know if we have seen your mum or not, There was a lady with two dogs that we saw on the beach most days when we were there in May this may have been her , we are back again next Monday for another two weeks and if I see this lady again i will give it a try and see. Regarding low cost flights to Corfu the rumour of easyjet or ryanair going to Corfu have been around since our first visit to Arillas 4 years ago but fingers crossed maybe one day, but i agree that the airport does need a little sorting before this could happen.

Hi, that does seem like my Mum. I'm so so jealous of her and Fiona please feel free to have a chat with her, I remember my Mum having quite a stressful time trying to find somewhere to live, I think the gentleman who owns or runs the supermarket near the petrol station and Arillas travel helped them out in the end, totally forgotten his name but he is a great guy.

There is an interesting article regarding flights to Corfu, the link is:http://travel.independent.co.uk/news_and_advice/article364429.ece

Prices have come down for Corfu this year, if you shop around you can get return tickets for about £150, the world Cup has also helped keep prices low but not for much longer as everybody will be fighting to get away now. To accommodate the low-cost carriers enforce the airport does need to be upgraded, however its hard to justify this with Corfu being seasonal and barely any flights in winter. Demand will need to pick up in winter but with more and more people seeing the light and moving out there I think this will come. Aegean are a popular expanding airline, they would be the perfect choice to operate, I often use them from Athens in winter. Incidentally we have had major delays at Corfu this year on 2 separate occasions, once because of storm damage to the runway and on another occasion the tarmac actually melted, can you really see low-cast carriers and their minimal overheads risking problems like this. :-(

Hi Joe we are off to arillas in 5 days, and really looking forward to it,we had asked for any info from anyone who had been to arilas with Thomas Cook recently about their transfers to and from resort and had a very pleasant reply 55mins gong out and 75 coming back, which is great. So have decided to stick with coach transfer, although realise nothing is guaranteed  personally I like the coach transfers, but was a bit concerned about them being 3-4 hours so It was very reassuring to hear from someone who had just come back from Arillas and had such a good transfer both ways.we will be staying at the mirage and it does sound really good.we will
be looking out for your Mum to say hello and pass on your regards.Oh well best get on with my packing now yippee! I love this bit!!

Hi Corfu 2002

The Mirage is very nice indeed and as it only consists of 10 studios at present it is very relaxing. I am staying there myself in September but when I was in Arillas a couple of weeks ago, I stopped by for a drink, met the TCX rep and was very impressed, the rooms are very big indeed.

What time does you flight get into Corfu and where are you flying from, I can then check which aircraft and the passenger loads for you and give you some idea of how long the transfer may be.

Hi,

Flying with the competition eh? I'll let you off though as we don't fly from Bristol (well very rarely) so we'll say you had no choice. Unfortunately as its a First Choice flight I can't check the details for you but I can say that all our flights are going full at the moment so you will be hitting at a very busy time, however, if your flight goes on time you should be one of the first in (fingers crossed).

The good (or bad depending on how you look at it) news on late flights is they usually carry a lot of the younger crowd who will be heading for the delights of Kavos, this should hopefully reduce the amount of people going your way. Interestingly enough the brand new July edition of Thomas Cook's Greece brochure arrived on my desk today and they have upped the projected transfer time to Arillas from 2h to 2h 30m. I think they have just done this to cover themselves and come out looking very good when the transfer turns out to be a 1h and a half.

Have a great holiday
Joe

Hi Joe. I'm a vey new member to the forum 31st July hope it's not too late to say that our family know  Helen and Mick well. we are back in San Stef on the 14th Aug heading of course to the Sundowner, I'll say hello to your mum.It was interesting to note that the coaches are still coming through Avliotes, last year there wern't as many thank goodness, when you're in the car it's a nightmare trying not to go into the drains. We now get a taxi from the airport they come straight through the other route via Daphne which is often less frought and quieter.

Hi JCC

It really is such a small world, I hope you do get chance to meet my mum when you get there. Arillas is a very interesting journey by coach, this year though they do seem to be using smaller ones which helps.

I know what you mean about the drains, I hit one in a scooter and ended up head first in bush :-(

Just managed to get off the phone to the mother who is baking in the sun at Arillas. She was very excited as somebody from this forum spotted her when she was out with the animals, came over and they had a good chat (I assume about the weather :-) ), it made her day. Just wanted to say thanks to whoever it was, I didn't get a name beacuse my mobile went dead but I will find out.

Thanks again!

Hi Joe

It was me that met your Mum in Arillas!  We booked a last minute holiday in Irene Villa Appartments which we spotted on this website.  While browsing through to see what the reports about it were like I happened to read this post.

I was in the cake shop and noticed 2 dogs outside, with an English woman inside - so I said 'Are you an English Woman with 2 dogs' (lol) and explained about the thread.  Your Mum was so chuffed you had put this thread up, she seemed quite touched you had done so.

No we didnt talk about the weather (much) mostly about Arillas and you!  I hear you will be going out soon so I am sure you will enjoy your stay.

Have fun!

Hi Judy,

Thank you so much for letting me now, my Mum was really chuffed I remember her telling me, it really did make her day. She loves it in Arillas and I can't imagine her ever coming back to the UK now but she still finds it nice to talk to people from home, probably trying to convince you to move out there to, ha ha! I had a text from her recently saying she has met some other lovely people from this forum (thanks to everyone) You were the first to see her though so thanks again it was really sweet of you.

Really looking forward to going on next month was going to jump a flight this weekend but with the chaos here at the moment it’s not really possible, oh well.

All the best

Hi Joe

Just back from Arillas - landed at 03.30 today.  Thanks for posting all the useful information - see my post under the security alert information.

Think I saw your mother walking the dogs along the seafront one evening, but didn't quite have the courage to stope her and enquire as I couldn't remember what dogs she has!!  I did spot where she lives however - very convenient position!  Had my birthday yesterday so it's now exactly three years until I retire so I'll definitely have a chat with her next year as I've had my two holidays this year (very sad!!)

Enjoy your holiday in September - Roy may be going back then for a week - lucky man!

Hi Joe

Got back from our wonderful holiday staying at  Mirage yesterday. The accommodation is everything you are expecting - just great.
What was fantastic was the transfer from the airport!
Don't know if somebody has either been watching over us or what, but the coach driver decided to head straight for Arillas instead of the normal Sidari - San Stef route, making us the first drop off. Took less than 1 hour.
Did, one morning, catch a glimpse of your Mum with her dogs, heading up the hill away from the whispers junction, but she was too far away to say hello.
Hope your fast approaching holiday is as good as ours was in everyway. (Hope your airport transfer rep is the one who lives in Sidari,
as a back to front transfer route means the coach ends up where she lives which is great for her and shows those poor Sidari people just what they are missing in Arillas)
Happy Holiday.

Got back from Arillas yesterday morning after a wonderful relaxing week.
We have never been anywhere that has had us chilled from the minute we arrived.( Hubby is hooked now )

Got to have a good chat with your Mum on Sunday morning. She has settled so well into the easy pace of life there ( No I am not jealous !!!!!)
I think she is enjoying her new found celebrity status in Arillas.

Well off to do washing etc but may have to check out prices for next year later today.

Have a good day  Pauline

Thanks for that I'm even more excited now, I've been looking at the CSQ results for the Mirage and its getting very high scores, especially its location which is ideal, not seen inside the rooms, can't wait. Staying at the Mirage I assume you travelled with Thomas Cook, one of the biggest complaints about Arillas was the transfer, great minds have been employed to try and improve this, glad to see in your case its working. I believe one of the ideas has been to sell the resorts in blocks so there should be enough holidaymakers for one coach per resort, this only works in peak time though as there are more flights, on some occasions there is literally nothing that can be done. To be honest the feedback from this site has been very useful, I have passed down the channels the problems people have had with the transfers and it doesn't go unnoticed.

Shame you didn't get chance to see my Mum, there's always next time!!

Hi Pauline,

My mum joked the other day she felt like a celebrity, she loves talking to people from home and always sends me an excited text when someone has come up to her. After the week I've had I have no concerns over her moving to Arillas, its fantastic for her and I wish I could be there more, I'm really looking forward to spending Christmas out there.

Hi,

Not long to go now and looking at the weather outside today It can't come soon enough, I can already taste the Mythos (http://www.websmileys.com/sm/drink/trink38.gif)

I don't know when the Wine Fetsival starts but I have it on good authority that it ends the weekend before we arrive, typical, just hope there is some left overs, I'm sure my mum will have collected some souveniers.

I'm flying out of Manchester at 2pm, it was orginally 9am but as the program is being reduced for Winter (it will be Christmas soon) my flight has been rescehduled, not to much of an issue as I get a lie in now and miss all the morning fun on the motorway.

Hope to see you there

Joe you saying about Chrimbo, in Tescos they already have all the selection boxes and tins of chocs and loads of xmas food already, i couldnt believe it!

Confirm them dates they were advertised when we were there in August. For those lucky people who are there it is fantastic fun and you only pay to fill your jug up once (they give you the jug as a souvenir) and the rest is free. ps don't forget your camera dancing and music is good too.

Hi
Ref the wine festival, the weather box note was what had got me worried as I had seen other references to 16/17/18 on the Arillas.com site, and guess what, we get there on the 18th so it could be a bit hit or miss !

Hi Jericlin,

This seems to be a common problem, I can see your picture fine here at work but if I log on to the laptop I get the dreaded red cross, this also happens with my picture and many others. When you upload the picture its converted to a different format (usually PNG) which may be the problem or it may be a cache issue which is providing a broken link. If you type the problem into Google it seems to be quite a common problem on forums such as this, I have not had time to have a fiddle with the settings to see if its a problem on our computers or an administrator issue (Dimitris is aware of this). The fact that it works fine on my computer at work but not at home makes me think it’s a problem on our machines.

There is another thread about it here http://wishingwell.gr/arillas_corfu/index.php?topic=1270.0 with some possible solutions, none of which worked for me but its worth a try. I'll post back if find a fix.

Cheers
Joe

Hi again,

I have changed some settings on my picture, can anybody let me know if they are having any problems seeing it as I won't be able to check on my laptop until I get home to see if I am still having the same problems.

Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe
Just looked at this thread and lo and behold we have a mug shot !? for Joe ( but nobody else ! ).
Monday is looming fast and a lot to do, just getting hire car sorted hopefully and raiding the piggy bank for the euros.
It looks a bit damp on Monday, lets hope it soon clears.
Cheers
Eric

By the way if anybody has the profile photos showing and is in Arillas next week, I would welcome being accosted, life is to short to waste time wondering whether to do things !!!!!!

Post by: Joe on September 15, 2006, 03:45:52 PM
Thanks for that,

I think its to do with the size of the picture you upload, using Kes's advice I changed my picture size to 60 pixels high by 90 pixels wide and it seems to be showing now where it wasn't before. If this turns out to the be the problem then to enable all users to see your photo everybody will need to upload a new picture but resized to a thumbnail 60 x 90 pixels, this should prevent the cache issue that is occurring. I would guess the pictures that aren’t showing were uploading in their original size.

I'll double check at home to see if mine is working, if so I'll post a link to an image-resizing programme that should fix the error that some people are receiving, unfortunately it will require most people to submit their pictures again, some pictures such as Viv’s and Kes’s (which I’m guessing were uploaded in the smaller size) are working fine but most are not. I really hate computers.

If the meantime if anybody wants to resize the their picture the following link takes you to a free program that will easily do it for you. http://www.geocities.com/peter_bone_uk/resize.html All you need to do is open up your original photo and change it 90 pixels wide by 60 pixels high, it well then save a copy for you to upload to the forum.

Good luck

Smiffo,

Your awesome picture along with almost everbody else's is one of the problem ones, I can see it at work and you can see it fine but many others can't see it (which is a shame, ha ha) including myself at home. The problem is with the original file you uploaded (it's to big which can cause various errors), you need to resize your original picture using the instructions above and upload the new photo then everybody can see you.

All pictures uploaded to the forum should be very small; no one has done anything wrong it's just a limitation of bulletin boards. Obviously you don't have to do this as it works for you already but if you want the rest of the gang on here to see your cheeky mug then you need to resize it, rest assured it won't look any different on the forum.

Yeah ive downloaded it, then i opened it and a box appeared with all the size coloumns to adjust but i dont know how i get it to do my picture, i had my picture open in another window but i dont know how to get it to acknowledge that fact, its all too much haha!!

Aha! In the resize window that opens go to File at the top of the screen, then click Add to List your picture won't physically appear in the window but the path to its location on your hard drive will be dipslayed. All you need to do then is change the Height to 60 and the Width to 90. Ignore everything else and click Start.

This will create a small thumbnail of your original picture and will save it along side with a similar filename, all you need to do then is upload the new photo to the forum and Robert's your fathers brother.

Phew!!!!

I try.

Resizing your picture sorts out the problem, I'm at home now and can see my photo on the profile. To fix this problem on the forum everyone needs to resize their picture, if anyone needs help with this please ask or email me your picture and i'll resize it for you. I'll send Dimitris a PM to see if he can put an announcement somewhere.

Right I'm officially on holiday now so time for some serious (http://www.websmileys.com/sm/drink/trink21.gif)

Have a good weekend eveyone

Title: Re: General Arillas Info and a Lady with 2 Dogs!

Hi,

It’s actually a problem with most forums, they can't cope with the picture because it is too big, you can see it fine though because it cache's on you own machine. It’s all computer gobbledygook but basically you have to make the picture smaller before you upload it and then everyone can see it otherwise people will just see a red cross instead. This will probably affect about 80% of the people on here, the only sure-fire fix is for everybody to resize their profile pictures, it will also speed the forums loading time up to for anybody not on broadband.

When you type a posting if you look at the tool bar above your typing there is an insert image icon just below the Italics icon, this is how you add a picture to your posting, however it requires a web address for the picture so you need to upload it to the web somewhere. Free websites like image shack will do this for you or if you have your own website you can use that.

Hi Blondegirl I have had no problem at all with any of the images members have added, must just be certain networks which are having problems.  I think we should all take a picture while we are there and put it on here for other to guess where it is.

She has a labrador and highland terrier (or similar small dog!) if my memory serves me correctly.  I saw her coming down from the cliff one morning as I was sat on one of the seafront benches.  Thought I would chance it and turned out it was Joe's mum and we had a lovely chat.

If you go to the Webcam page, in the top left hand corner is webcam menu. If you then go onto Archive 2006, all the pictures are there up to 31 October. I think Dimitris updates them at the end of each month so you won't get November's yet. The only problem is remembering the exact date if you are looking for a particular picture!

Finally remembered to go back and look at the webcam shots from the 3rd November now the full archive of all 2006 is up. Very good spot Suzanne it is their dogs but it looks like Paul is actually out taking them and not my Mum (late night perhaps). Thanks for pointing it out I shall keep hold of the picture and show it to them when I'm next out there which hopefully won't be to long.

May have to rename this thread, I've just heard a vicious rumour that they may have inherited yet another dog, as if 2 weren't enough, so any early visitors in May please stop and say hi if you see a lady getting dragged down the street by two or three dogs, my Mum always loves a gossip and really enjoyed meeting the forum members last year. She did promise she would be online now speakin to us all but she is on Greek time "we'll get it when we get it" was the very untroubled response the last time I asked.

Please say hi if you bump into her.
