Title: Coronavirus Latest Updates: Greece is Shutting Down
Post by: dimitris on March 13, 2020, 10:40:32 PM
Hello again from my home in Arillas.
I know it is a bit awkwardd to post about those things ... I believe many of you would like to know how we are all dealing with it in Arillas.
Our country is in virtual shut down as our government today announced the closure of all shopping malls, cafes, restaurants, and bars, apart from takeaway shops to help control the spread of the coronavirus. Also the country’s museums and archaeological sites will be closed at least until March 30.
Yesterday, it had announced a two-week closure of all the courthouses, theaters, cinemas, gyms, children playgrounds and nightclubs in the country.  These emergency measures come on top of the already-announced closure of all Greek schools, as 190 cases and one death were recorded in the country till Friday evening.
Until this moment there are no cases of coronavirus in Corfu mentioned.
We are all following the steps that the government announces. The pandemic mode of this virus is getting very serious, it seems that we need to be isolated as much as possible within our closest family.  we will try to stay safe at home, take walks to the beach with our kids , eat healthy, drink water frequently and  wash our hands.... no social touching, no kisses, ( what a pity)

I hope this is the way to stop the virus from spreading too quickly ... time will show... we are all waiting....

I'll keep you in touch as I have loads of time now !!!!yamas

Thanks for the update Dimitri, strangely no such measures here in the UK yet, despite our infection rates being much higher. We can only hope for a miracle but it is not looking promising for the 2020 season.

Thank you for the update Dimitris.  It's worrying times for everyone  - the not knowing what the short term impact will be, how much we will all be affected. However we remain optimistic that we will be able to enjoy the Arillas magic in July. In the meantime, keep well and enjoy the bonus time with family.

Day 1 of General shut down in Corfu,
It was a quiet day in Arillas as it is at this time of the year, the local cafes are only doing takeaways, the pizzaria is doing takeaway and delivery, Monamour taverna in Kavadades is doing takeaways too. The louvros cafe in Kavadades has a delivery service too.

Local supermarkets were open as well as petrol stations . nothing seems to be a problem .
The business owners are continuing doing the summer season's preperations including my self ( you can spot me on the attached picture with my best helper.)
The local hardware shop was busy selling paint and building material  I did notice the owners wearing gloves.
A police car was checking carefully all the places that used to be open. The officers walked in to the establisments giving a friednly warning that only takeaway or delivery is allowed.
I would never think that I will be witnessing this kind of situation in my life.... but it is true!!!!!
I spent two hours preparing our homegrown bamboos  with the help of my son Alkaios who is now 5 years old.
every 10 minutes some people walked or drove by and stopped to have a chat (about the virus situation ofcourse) keeping a distance of a couple of meters away some did not even bother to come out tof the car.The beach was frequent by local families with kids. However near Athens some public beach areas and ski resorts were overcrowded with people so the goverment is going to prohibit acces to those poppular places too by tomorrow.
The main thing is to remain away from other people as much as possible. This is a pandemic outbeak  not a holiday. We stay at home.!
We do not know the results of those tactics yet...I'll be able to tell you more when I finich those bamboos.

that's for today, have a nice evening....

Thanks for the update Dimitris.  We are all hoping that not only will Corfu not be affected much but that we will all get to our beautiful Arillas. It is looking that the government will shortly be announcing here that over 70s need to self isolate for 4 months! That is a long time to not see family. My Dad has COPD and he is 79 so extremely worried about him. My son also has asthma so he is self isolating and working at home. Worrying times.

Today I remained mostly in and arround my house...
I went to the Arillas bakery to get some bread for our breakfast. Maria has closed the door and is serving her customers though the window.... very nice trick to keep distance...
The local small supermarket nextdoor is in normal business no empty selfs, loads of toiletpaper and corfu beer etc.
The weather is sooo nice so my kids spent time outside in our garden Litsa was busy tiding the house as she is off work . the municipality office where she works has closed the doors to the public . Only after an apointment someone can meet with the staf, otherwise everything is done by telephone or email.
Our very good friend Noufris has came back from a Vacation in MEXIKO !!! he now has to stay in his apartmetn with his two friends that were with him in self isolation quarantine for two weeks as the the Greek authorities have announced, ‘ all travellers arriving in Greece from abroad are required to go into 14 days self isolation’ as from 16th March.than means if you enter the border will be having a week's holiday in April you will have to extend your holiday for one more week but you will have to stay arround your villa...  (english humor...  sorry)  Oh! I forgot to tell you that all accommodation is banned untill end of april so that joke is only for expat villa owners....
We were supposed to travel  for a long weekend on the 29th March to 1st April so I received an email from ryanair containing the following:

Ryanair expects the result of these restrictions will be the grounding of most of its aircraft fleet across Europe over the next 7 to 10 days. Because of this we want to offer our customers as much flexibility as possible in relation to their scheduled travel plans. We are now offering you the following options in relation to your booked flight.

· You can now move your flight free of charge to a date in the future.
· The flight change fee will be waived in full.
· You will only have to pay the difference in fare.
· This flight date change will only apply to the route you have already booked.
· Please do not try to change to another date in April.

Closure of shops in Corfu being considered
what will be open... from wendestday
The goverment also anounced entry ban for travellers from Italy, Albania and North Macedonia. Only freight vehicles allowed.
To date all coronavirous samples sent from Corfu have tested negative for coronavirus. However, tents are set up outside the main hospital building to examine patients for coronavirus...

Among all these , I feel very lucky that my family and closed friends can go through all this in CORFU and not anywhere alse in world.
Talk to you soon,
Dimitris

Hi Dimitris
Will Churches still go ahead every Sunday?? - I only ask as this is one of the largest weekly gatherings, all around Corfu, with many parishioners being in the 60's plus age group.
The UK say - avoid Bars/Pubs Social gatherings etc but do not mention Churches. (Sunday Services/Weddings/Christenings are surely a social gathering??)
Cheers

Ill have to check this out ....
According to the press conference
All church services for all religions suspended, the Prime Minister made it clear that there will be no services and that this decision applies to all dogmas and religions.

However, the churches will be open for private prays
  .;
what would this mean?  I'll find out.
it seems to me that the Greek church is taking the UK plan more in to credit while greek goverment has it;s own plans....
stay tuned,

Dimitris

Hi
Ironic really, we are expecting our Skiathos trip in June and possibly September in Corfu will be cancelled, we have booked Arillas for September 2021 with Jet2. Our first independent holiday.
Thankfully this June and September we are with TUI as package holidays. No hassle in getting refunds.
Waiting for TUI to release Skiathos for June 2021 so we can book

good afternoon from Arillas....everyone seems to be very serious about the Coronavirus . Yesterday new strict measures were taken in order to eliminate the spread of the virus.
All citizens are ordered to stay at home. Exceptions are allowed for those needing to go to work and short trips to supermarkets, doctors, relatives in need, exercise (single or in pairs) or to walk their pet.

Specifically, Greek citizens must fill out and sign certain forms that will explain the reason they are outdoors. The Ministry of the Interior is providing online all forms needed at forma.gov.gr and by text at 13033.
I've just came back from shopping in Acharavi.
I did text the facility free number 13033 with the reason I'm moving out of my house, my full name and address . a message came back to me at once to confirm my move. this is the only way now to move around in Greece...
The supermarkets were all full of products I did not notice empty shelves... there is a specific number of persons allowed to be inside the shops. NO PANIC SHOPPING! everything was smooth and friendly.

Apparently, during the weekend some foreign citizens owning homes together with repatriating locals  in Corfu did manage to fly to Corfu and other Greek destinations through Germany , Holland and England. once they arrived they were all checked at the Athens Airport by medical teams where  they  were given strict directions that they will have to stay in Self Quarantine for 14 DAYS in the address they are applying. Anyone braking this rule will be fined 5.000 euros.... some people in mainland  have been already fined.... according to the radio news.
at the moment I'm writing this there are NO CONFIRMED CASES IN CORFU while  total number of fatalities in Greece are up to 16. Confirmed cases have jumped to 624 .
Listening to the radio I heard that Greece will stop more flights from other countries...Our flight at the end of March with Ryanair was cancelled and I did apply for a full refund. However, everyone seems to be very healthy in Arillas  and we are still talking to each other!!!! LOL
I have been enjoying the time with my family in and around my house , life is like a holiday at home....  The government is offering many benefits to business and individuals financially effected...  the local electricity company is doing the same, the telephone companies are offering free data to everyone.
every one is trying their best. There must be some optimistic way to see all these...
I hope that soon Ill be able to tell.
Keep safe everyone,
xxxxx

To our friends in and around the village we send our best wishes

Wegg did our normal weekly shop, in Sidari , this morning without any queues or problems. - I think we should all learn from the Greek way of life.
They have got it right in Corfu. Knock the lump on the head before the lump appears.
I hate all this with a passion but will follow the rules as specified.

Good afternoon from Arillas ,
Greece is now over a month with corona virus cases with  1,061 cases in Greece, death toll at 32.
On the entire island Police are continuing to conduct checks to see if people are adhering to the lockdown measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Our government  suspends more flights and  no general repatriation ir alowed.. only for those that have nowhere to live where they were until now.

This morning we have the first confirmed Covid-19 case for Corfu of a Greek patient with severe pneumonia at Corfu Hospital who had come from Belgium some days ago.  his home is at Evropouli village near Corfu town.Schools are still closed until further notice and most shops remain closed too.
I have been talking to a friend who belongs to the Hellenic tourism Organisation in Corfu and is a member of the Corfu tourism Crisis Committee. There is a master-plan for the tourism in Greece the day after all these is going to finish... having heard of their plan made me feel optimistic for the first time this week. Ill be able to tell you more when it will be published.we have had a fab week with loads of playing and gardening together with our kids. It is nice when you have your garden outside your home while you are not able to have any other social life.
Walking arround Arillas we spot almost everyone preparing for the new season although we do have cancelations for May and June we do have bookings made last week for July which is very pleasant to hear.
Once again  STAY HEALTHY to all of our friends.

When this is over I WILL BUY YOU AN OUZO!!!YAMMAS
Dimitris

PS: weather-wise today it's slightly windy with much sunshine.

It very much looks like our return to the Tria in May won't go ahead, it may just be too soon for travel restrictions to be eased.

Well,!
it was a rainy day in Arillas.
Every one is fine in Arillas and the area, life is restricted with only the necessary things but I must say I do enjoy this .... I;m with my family in and out and around our house, we can communicate with anyone, litsa my wife does not have to go to work, I do not have to work until God knows!! what can I say? additionally the kids are out of school and we have so much time for them.
I don't think there will be any tourism at all in during the next few weeks or even months so, we just have to stay well and wait.
there doesn't seem to be any shortage of anything right now as far as the supermarkets etc is concerned,..
I hope it will all finish and we will remember it as bad dream,

Nothing seems to have changed apart of that Greece has banned swimming, fishing and all recreation water sports like canoeing, kayak and windsurfing in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The ban is valid until April 21, 2020 or for as long as lockdown measures apply. It is still too cold to swim for most of us but there is a good number of winter swimmers, surfers, and hobby fishermen in Arillas that are not amused by the new rules.
I know this sounds crazy for a place like Arillas but the measures are unfortunately taken from one Government and are valid for the whole country.  However, professional fishermen can still go fishing.
It is the first time of my life that I see so many police cars in Arillas passing by even three times a day. according to a small talk  4 foreign nationals were arrested and given a fine on the north beach for sunbathing....

It is also the first time of my life that I see people IN ARILLAS wearing a surgery mask and gloves while walking or driving... this is the only strange thing I feel to report. There does not seem to be any shortage of goods in any shop we visited.
Another incredible issue will be the GREEK EASTER in the Corona Virus Crisis in Greece. Αccording to Stelios Petsas the Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesma said on the Greek Radio News:  The Easter spit roasted lamb is an occasion for a company, a gathering. We all know what's going on in the neighborhoods and the flats of apartment buildings. What we must prevent is the gathering ",, repeating that this Easter we will not go to our villages, we will not skewer the lambs in our yards and we will not go to our churches ."We have faith in ourselves. We will celebrate next year and next year it is enough to have our loved ones with us. So let's skewer the coronavirus this year by staying at home and taking protection measures, "he said.Additionally the government made Calls on Greek MPs, ministers to donate 50% of salary to fight COVID-19.Up to the moment I'm Typing this we have already the second covid-19 case officially  in Corfu an elderly person form Corfu Town, more people have been tested today and yesterday and we are awaiting for their results. In Greece The average age of the 92 patients who are Intensive Care Units  is 66 and 70% of them have other underlying conditions. Up to now,11 patients have been discharged from ICUs.
bellow I made a video of our Arillas Webcam today , Enjoy.

Thank you Dimitris.
Knowing what is happening and how you are dealing with things gives us an insight to how you are coping.
Keeping things in perspective and continuing as you are can only be for the good.

As you know I have had a transplant, this puts me at high risk
My neighbour had 2 transplants and was in the same group.
Last week we stood on our doorsteps to show our appreciation of of our health workers.
This week I was there but unfortunately my neighbour was not, he was taken by the virus.
So sad that he had fought through the years only to be taken by this awful thing that is battering us all.
Everyone keep well and safe
Do what you have to do and one day we will all be together again.

Good Afternoon form your favorite place in the world.!
Despite the fact that health care resources have been reduced by 75% since the Great Recession in the last 10 years, Greece has been able to achieve significant things to reduce corona virus spread in the country.
Once again, in times of enormous difficulty and challenge, small Greece has become a model for the rest of the world. This has to do with the legacy that Greece has inherited for centuries - a legacy of courage, creativity and perseverance.
Someone commented that it is surprising that the Greeks are so disciplined, but they really are not. When you say hello in Greek you say "health", when you say goodbye you say "health", our general gratitude in the discussion is health .

With the above words I would like to start today's report.Until today Corfu has  not even a handful of covid 19  cases reported,  the new suspicious cases being tested until yesterday are all negative.
Our Government extends closure of shops and beaches until April 27. Schools are set to be closed until 10th of May. Our

Children are now finally being taught online from home. The Greek Civil Protection announced on Wednesday a series of stringent controls at the main exits of Athens and other cities and suspended inter-island travel with a few exceptions. In an effort to contain the spread of coronavirus, authorities will intensify lockdown checks at highways and toll stations, ports and airports, …
In Arillas everyone is awaiting for news about restarting tourism.
Most sources tell us that it is still too early to say. However, a lot of yoga retreats and festivals in Arillas are cancelled until the end of July, some new places were due to open for 2020 they are now considering about it. It all depends whether the flights will start again and when this occurs it means that there will be some global regulations about travelling and tourism.

Never the less, In Arillas the local council has been working and remade the donkey-track to Agios Stefanos from Arillas beach, there is a picture I took a couple of days ago.
(http://www.arillas.com/images/2020/donkeytrack.jpg)Even some parts of the road from Magoulades to Sidari have been newly tarmacked.
The people of Arillas are silently preparing their hotels, Tavernas, and villas, Arillas beach and it;s people will all be there when the time comes.
This is the week that I would have been opening my Taverna , I must say … I miss you already.
For all you until the time comes that we meet again I have managed to install a new Webcam in AFIONAS (https://arillas.com/afionas-webcam) at my good old friend Spiros's  Restaurant ANEMOS.
(http://www.arillas.com/images/2020/afionas_webcam.jpg) (https://arillas.com/afionas-webcam)
It will keep you busy watching FROM HOME  the clouds and the magnificent sunsets on a daily basis.
Miss you all,

Thanks for the info and the new webcam. It came up on my memories from a couple of years ago that I attended your opening night, and what a great night it was. I could almost taste the gorgeous food. We will be there to taste it for real as soon as we can. Love and hugs for you all, and keep keeping safe :-)

Dimitris, thank you for the update, it really is good to hear things are shaping up  around Arillas.  Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our visit to the Tria for 14th May but have rebooked for May 2021.  It will be such a shame not to be there this year, l must admit to checking in regularly and seeing what the seafront is looking  like on the webcam.

Kay and myself hope that Arillas can enjoy some weeks, hopefully months of the 2020 season.

Kalispera Dimitris

Thank you very much indeed for the latest update, the sooner this dreaded virus situation is over the better but alas only time will tell us that,  really looking forward to coming to Arillas this year but if it's not possible so be it, we can only live in hope and take each day as it comes at the moment, in the meantime keep safe everyone, we will be back at some point in the future :-)

Thank you for the update Dimitris and the new camera - I'm watching my video of the Arillas sea each evening, it brings me calm after a busy day working in the NHS, and it's lovely to see the Arillas sun and the sunsets.
It's useful to know what is happening in Greece (and, more specifically Corfu), and heartening to hear of the tentative, background preparations for the summer season.

We hope that incidences of this awful disease lessen thanks to people being sensible and staying home, so restrictions can be lifted. We  and we continue to have the hope that we will get to Arillas this summer but are realistic that is may not happen - however you have to have hope, something to look forward to!
Stay safe and well.

My money is on a opening of the travel on the first week in July but we will need a test for Covid19 that says you have antibodies!!! Ban on flights to and from Greece extended to 15 May

ATHENS. The extension of the temporary ban on flights to and from Italy, Spain, Turkey, UK, Netherkands and Germany was announced today.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) announced that the temporary ban on flights to and from specific countries will be extended to 15 May.

The CAA issued NOTAMS (Notice to Airmen) that, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the temporary ban on flights to and from Italy, Spain, Turkey, UK, Netherlands and Germany will be extended. Specifically, from Wednesday 15 April until 15 May at 23:59 all passenger flights to and from airports in the aforementioned countries will be temporarily suspended.

Specifically in the case of Germany flights to and from Athens Airport only will be allowed.

As in the previous NOTAMS issued by the CAA, exceptions to the suspension will be cargo, sanitary and humanitarian flights, ferry flights (returning with crew), state, emergency and military (except to and from Turkey) flights. Also excepted are Frontex flights, refuelling, flights supporting the Greek National Health Service and repatriation flights with Greek citizens.

The temporary ban on non-European citizens entering the country has also been extended, with the following exceptions: members of European families, citizens from the Schengen zone, health workers, citizens of third countries who have long-term visas for a European and Schengen country, government, diplomatic, military and humanitarian personnel, air crews and non-European citizens who been given permission to travel by the Greek Consulate.

I have just read this on Facebook and had to post it here. Well done Greece

"I'm currently in Alexandropoulos Northern Greece, been working here for almost a year. The moment Covid 19 was detected here, the government acted with strict rules, no ambiguous statements. All bars, restaurants and non essential shops are closed. If I want to leave my hotel I must fill in a form stating where I am going, for what reason and the length of time I will be out. I must carry this form with me along with my passport and a certificate from my employer. Failure to do so results in a €150 fine. Further transgressions will double the fine. The streets are empty and almost everyone, as far as I can see, are abiding by the conditions set out by the government. This has resulted in Greece having a lower death rate than Teesside where I live. That's an astounding statistic !"

Today, Holy Saturday, at 9 pm and until Easter Monday at 12 midnight , the lockdown  measures are getting stronger by  doubling the fine to 300 per person euros and removing the license plates of cars up to tho months for unnecessary travel. That's  being extended throughout the country. Also, the fine for gatherings of more than ten people is 1,000 euros for each person.
The authorities are trying to stop people from the Easter gathering that is the most popular and important celebration in Greece ( more than Christmas)

It is important to follow the rules, to celebrate only with the people with whom we live in the same house. We have achieved a lot so far - let's protect them, and let's protect each other.
We stay in our  home, we come out winners!Tonight Vasilis from Armourada restaurant will be  playing VERY loud (as he does on his Pavaroti nights) the church service until  midnight . we are all waiting for the moment that the clocks hit 12.00 and we will all put our fireworks on.

Happy Easter to you and your families!

Hi
Must have lockdown syndrome. Did not realise how much I had written as I proof read this post. The keyboard just kept going.

There is no doubt that Greece has done well in the containment of this virus but I don’t think you can compare Greece with the UK.
We are geographically totally different.

As of April 19th Greece had recorded 2,235 cases of the virus. 113 deaths and 269 recovered. If you extrapolate these figures the vast majority of these statistics show the mainland is the worst affected.
A high percentage in Athens.

Depending what data base you use, it seems only 33% of the population live on the islands.
The islands, being the time of the year the virus was first highlighted, I would estimate had few international travellers landing at their airports. Not all have airports.
They can, and have, self-isolated very effectively.

The majority of our infections have been in London and other large densely populated cities. We are also the largest travel hub in Europe, so we have had more businessmen, tourists (Chinese being a high %) and students (again many Chinese) unknowingly bringing the virus with them before we even knew about it.
Like Italy which has the largest death toll in Europe, we have an ageing population.

The discussions now seem to be how and when to ease the lockdown regulations.  Each country seems to be compared to the rest. With differing lock down timetables it’s very likely that nations who relax lockdown measures early will have a second wave of infection and we will not. We simply do not know. Time will tell.

There are also festering cauldrons of various diseases and infections throughout the EU in refugee camps. Many refugees recently from Turkey. As of April 19th Turkey had 86,306 cases of the virus. 2017 deaths, and 11,976 recovered (up from Aril 16th), so they will be only too happy to push out more refugees if they start proving a threat to their own citizens.

In Lesbos, for example, they have confined 1000’s of refugees that fled from Turkey when they recently opened their borders. The refugees are kept in terrible conditions, certainly no social distancing, and with poor sanitation. If they break out, or are set free another outbreak could be released. As of last week though there had been no outbreaks reported. It only takes one security guard to pass the infection on.

It can be said the UK were slow off the mark. Why did we allow travellers particularly from China and Italy to continue to land at Heathrow? Should we have shut down and locked everybody out. Should we have repatriated our citizens from infected areas throughout the EU and the rest of the world?

Yes we can criticise our government, they appeared to be slow of the mark, and yes mistakes have been made. I believe they are doing their best. The advice the Government was given and still is at times, is very conflicting.

The last Government pandemic drill was in 2016, Exercise Cygnus, a simulation for a flu pandemic, it would be interesting to know the conclusions they came to regarding   the level of our preparation to handle the situation.

The situation of PPE is a shambles. Even then, there are mitigating circumstances. Apparently a consignment of gowns was mislabelled and when opened were masks. Another shipment  was faulty.
The latest consignment of scrubs from Turkey had to be delayed to ensure the contents were correctly identified.

With testing kits, again there are mitigating reasons for insufficient numbers. A batch from a Luxemburg manufacturer, Eurofins, had to be delayed as core components were contaminated with the virus the Telegraph recently reported.

The 17.5m antibody home testing kits ordered by the government could in fact be unreliable, scientists have said,  that they may fail to detect up to half of coronavirus cases. If issued could cause a false sense of security. They were due to be available through Boots and Amazon. As reported in The Guardian

I do think the UK should be proud of itself and its population for pulling together, displaying unprecedented displays of support for their fellow man, and of selflessness, sacrifice and bravery, beyond the call of duty in so many areas of our community, not seen in peace time in my memory.

We will never forget those who have succumbed to this tragic infection. Every death is a life lost, a loved one lost to family and friends. It is a tragic loss. Life will never be the same for many families knowing lives were taken because of this pandemic. They all deserve our thoughts and prayers.

One issue we should all agree on is that we must never become so reliant on China again. When this is over their economy will no doubt prosper and flourish. Whilst that of the rest of the world will be in a deep recession. That’s not justice.

Hi
See released bulletin. Perhaps Dimitrus can elaborate.

Greece's Minister of Tourism said that Greek authorities are mulling over the introduction of a ''health passport''which will serve as proof that an individual is not suffering from COVID -19.
The minister said that Greece will only have a 3 month tourist season this year between July and September, but added that if the situation develops  positively, then the ''shoulder season'' months of October and November might see an increased number of tourists in the country.

However the biggest challange for the tourism dependent country will to be determine  who will be able to enter Greece and when.

Minister Theocharis said that there is an ongoing discussion at the EU level to determine the ways in which EU citizens will be allowed to go on vacation this year.

Brussels aims to provide a creditible test for every individual who wishes to go on holiday anywhere in Europe.
The test will have to be conducted by the member state of origin of the traveller before he or she boards an airplane or any other means of transport.

It is unclear at this point whether non EU nationals will be allowed to visit the country this summer or not

Title: Re: Coronavirus Latest Updates: Greece Plan to Relax Covid19 Measures Next Week
Post by: dimitris on April 21, 2020, 10:36:45 PM
Hi again,
We must be quite patient at this time.
Greece has managed to "flatten the curve".    so now in Corfu there are no more corona cases since a few days . Until today there have been only 5 people found positive on Covid19 in the entire island that has a population of about 100.000   .I I found an interesting article about the history of the coovid19 in Greece here :https://southeusummit.com/europe/greece-beats-back-coronavirus/ (https://southeusummit.com/europe/greece-beats-back-coronavirus/)
Now that we have closed the borders and we do take precautions against the spread of the virus, We  are patiently waiting for is the relaxation of the strict traffic and moving restrictions, which is expected to be announced in the coming days and most likely within a week.
The milestone date will be Monday, May 4th.
Along with Relaxing coronavirus lockdown,  the termination of the infamous sms in 13033, which we continue to send every time it is necessary to leave our house  will gradually  begin.

In the first phase, we will be able to leave our homes without having to register where we will go, since from that day the operation of the small commercial stores will begin.
This is the suggestion that exists in the Prime Minister's Office after the last discussions with the competent ones, that is, scientists and ministers.
From May the 4th, almost the entire retail sector shops will operate again, ie the stores with the small and medium size  surface with specific restrictions about Covid19 safety.
In parallel with the gradual opening, the control for overcrowding will be maintained and tightened, as from then on, each shopkeeper will be responsible.
There will be fines if there are many more in a small store instead of the people who are expected to be inside. Keeping your distance and avoiding contact will be the first of the measures.
Hotels - Accommodation
The decision is to open the whole-year-round hotels from June 15 to July 15 and the remaining accommodation from July the 1st.But this decision is not easy.
An agreement must be reached within the EU on how flights will be operated from now on, as this is how most tourists arrive to the country.

Cafes - bars
It will be the last stores to open. There are two scenarios.
The first to open those that have outdoor spaces, in the period 11 - 18 May by reducing their tables and keeping the distance of 1 meter, and the second to open  some time in June.Authorities have said that even if the lockdown is lifted it will be imposed again if the coronavirus resurgences .

Stay safe everyone!

Hello again from a semi-cloudy but warm Arillas.
Yesterday there was a new announcement about the gradual unlocking and relaxation of the covid-19 measures in Greece. From Next Monday the 4th May there will be no more controls and moving registrations , small shops, hairdressers, barbershops, beauty-salons  would be able to open under specific restrictions concerning covid-19 safety.  Face masks will be compulsory while being in public...

From the 11 May

there will be more  other retail stores, except for shopping malls, however,  travelling ban  to other prefectures or other islands will still be in force. Schools will start a partial opening from that date to mid June  while only permanent residents can travel to the islands from the mainland.
On the 1st of June
cafes, and restaurants will be able to open, probably those with outdoor areas. Many restrictions are coming in that sector that I have not understood yet. There will be advice about tables density and  distance, covid-19 safety, masks for every person working within this sector etc.

The first SMALL tourist accommodation facilities will be able to open some time after the 15th of JUNE so far we have flights coming in to Corfu.
The ministry of tourism is talking about restarting tourism from the beginning of JULY  but that is also depended on whether there will be flights to and from Corfu .So it means that we now have May and most of June with no tourists but we can be a bit more flexible in going around villages , shopping ( I'can now have my haircut)  etc. we can now go to the beach and do some sports.
I have not understood yet when we will be able to go in to the sea without "braking the law".Apparently two days ago a local expat lady was fined 150 euros for swimming in Arillas beach ALONE.

The Arillas international BEER FESTIVAL (https://arillas.com/corfu-meets-belgium) was cancelled yesterday that is normally taking place in end September every year. I think all local smaller  festivals and larger events will be cancelled too because the restriction for gathering (max 10 people) will still be in force for some time.On Friday 1st May we would have started with the Arillas trail event (https://arillas.com/events/312-trail-2020)  but this is not possible any more.  BUT I will be doing the walk  with my family on that day and I have invited others to follow keeping the distances. I' ll take some pictures for you!
At the moment I'm preparing my Taverna (https://arillas.com/things-to-do/restaurants-tavernas/brouklis) for the summer ... I 'm hoping to open some time next week but ONLY TAKEAWAY as this this the only option until the 1st of June.

We have some time to wait and see what the results of "unlocking"  will be.

I'll keep you in touch.
Stay safe
I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Eggy, over here we have a number (3) and that is where the eccythump can you buy a face mask as all shops and builders merchants have sold out so that means you have to starve until some come from China. Don't hold your breath Neil cos it will take a while.
Have a good day at least you are sitting where a lot of us would love to be even if we had to have a face mask on. Hope to see you soon but our next holiday is not likely as the flights will not be flying in time for the start of our start up so sods law is in the way. See you soonish ??????

Hi again Dimitris - just to let you know that I have now seen article confirming what you said - that face masks are compulsory or "strongly recommended" (which is a completely different thing!!) in public places and that we will be fined 150 euros for not wearing one.  As it also says in the article "this Prime Minister seems to have a 150 euro solution for every Greek problem"!!!  Wendy

Hi wendy,
I agree with you, I'm not sure that I will be able to serve in my taverna wearing a mask.
and ... if you are eating at my Taverna how would you be able to  smoke if you wear a mask?
in a couple of days it will all be clear I hope.
I have been reading in various Greek newspapers that Masks are going to be compulsory  for workers and customers of small shops, barbers, hairdressers etc as well as in public transport. also all workers in Supermarkets must wear a mask by the law from 4th of May.

I found some English information here :
https://greece.greekreporter.com/2020/04/29/greeks-must-learn-how-to-live-with-face-masks-or-face-stiff-fine/ (https://greece.greekreporter.com/2020/04/29/greeks-must-learn-how-to-live-with-face-masks-or-face-stiff-fine/)

As of that date, the use of masks is mandatory or strongly recommended in enclosed spaces such as hospitals, supermarkets and grocery stores, retail and other shops, public transport and taxis. This is especially true in areas where there is close physical contact, like in hairdressers, barbershops and beauty parlors and driving license schools.

Good evening dear Arillas Friends

WE are now on the phase of unlocking! 'Arillas style'!
Since the fourth of May we are back out at the streets as many small shops are now able to open again. Finally swimming is allowed as well as summer sports like windsurfing ,, surfing, SUP, etc.

we had two good windy days where I could go out on my windsurf I ENJOYED EVERY MOMENT.

The beach has been busy with locals on a daily basis . It's so nice to see the local kids going out on their bikes and play again all together, soon the reopening of schools will start...
We have not had any significant news about coronavirus in Corfu island for many days! We are all waiting for the next stage of unlocking which is going to be from the 1st of June. Then all cafes and tavernas will be able to open with tables and chairs under certain distance- regulations and virus safety .
Tourism is set to start from the 1st July according to the latest news.
On the 15th of May we are going to have the first announcements of how things are going to function , health protocols for bars, tavernas, restaurants cafes as well as hotels and other accommodation. I'm not going to go through different scenarios. I will wait and let you know as soon as we have our official information.

Greece is trying to promote tourism and fix protocols that are going to help the economy without risking the health of locals or the visitors.

My taverna is open (https://brouklis.com/)since last Wednesday only for takeaway with limited menu and staff.

The pizzeria next door opened as well !
So far we are all  in good business only with the local population . People where so happy that they do not have to cook after about 40 days of lockdown.

It does not seem to be such a big problem wearing a mask in public places which is only compulsory for workers in food business and shops. As well as in public buses , trains, etc, it is only strongly advised to wear a mask as a customer
The only bad news I have is that it is getting hotter and hotter and  THE MOSQUITOES arrived.... they do not have any tourists and we are their only customers. AOUCH!!!!!

Stay safe and keep calm,

Hi Kevin

I admire your optimism. There might be light at the end of Greece's tunnel but the tunnel is still dark at the  UK end.

Our phase 3 of lifting the lockdown is July earliest and even then that does not mean complete freedom. Our preditions, for whatever reason,  have not been accurate of late.

I don’t think Greece will open its borders to all  visitors this year. I should imagine various countries will be excluded who are not deemed to be free of the virus.
A good indicator I suppose would be no new cases within the incubation period of virus.
Their  own security will be paramount.

As of yesterday the UK has the fourth highest death rate in Europe per million citizens. Belgium being the highest.

Don’t know how long our new quarantine period for people entering the UK will last. This will have a major influence on peoples travel plans.

Although according the press today, Johnson and Macron have agreed the quarantine will not apply between France and the UK!!!
Dont fancy a French holiday.lol

Keep safe and well all

Hi

Matt Hancock said today international holidays are unlikely this Summer. He was asked  if  Summer was cancelled and he said that is likely to be the case.
We have not made a final decision on that yet, but we will seek to re open some hospitalty from early July in the UK. Social distancing of some kind will continue.
It is  unlikely that intenational holidays are going to be possble this Summer, I think that is just a reality of life

They said by 1st of July if all goes well. No details but I assume that R should be as it is now and there will be a form of agreement between Greece and the countries that will allow their citizens to travel, from EU mostly.

I agree with Kev. Very unlikely we will be let into Corfu this year☹
Certainly that is the impression I am getting from our hosts in Arillas.

Hi
See following article from the Times. If this does actually materialize, as I said previously, the world cannot afford the shutdown any longer ,economics will decide your holidays this year not the virus.
Just travel from a high death rate/ high infection area  to a ''clean airport''. Does that make sense?
You still have to get travel insurance, which could be another problem.

Avoid coronavirus travel quarantine by flying from ‘clean’ airport

Holidaymakers flying from a limited number of British airports will be able to enter Europe without being tested and quarantined under new measures to open up tourism.

A “blacklist” of 13 UK airports has been drawn up by the European Aviation Safety Agency (Easa), an EU organisation, to mark out those in areas with the highest coronavirus infection rates.

Greece confirmed yesterday that the system would be used to determine which passengers would be subject to the strictest measures on arrival from June 15 when it opens its borders to tourists for the first time since March. All people from high-risk areas will be given a Covid-19 test, with isolation periods of seven or 14 days depending on whether the result is positive. Harry Theoharis, Greece’s tourism minister, confirmed that the “more difficult travelling arrangement” would only routinely apply to those arriving from airports on the list.

It raises the possibility that tourists will be able to avoid tests and quarantine when flying out of some UK airports. Those not on the Easa list included Edinburgh — the sixth busiest airport in Britain — as well as Belfast, Bristol, Aberdeen, Southend, Southampton and Cardiff.

The 13 airports blacklisted included Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. The list will be updated regularly. Easa’s global list featured all airports in 23 American states and those in the Île de France region around Paris, Lombardy in northern Italy and those in Catalonia and Madrid in Spain.

The plan emerged as Spain said that it wanted to welcome British tourists back as soon as possible. It will receive foreign visitors from July 1. A pilot scheme will operate in the last two weeks of June involving thousands of visitors, mostly from Germany, arriving in the Balearic and Canary islands and tracked through an app.

Aviation sources told The Times yesterday that the Greek arrangement was likely to be adopted in other European countries in coming weeks and months......

So new guidance from the Greek authorities has been updated today on travel from the UK.

‘ Restrictions in response to coronavirus
You must complete an online Passenger Locator Form (PLF) at least 48 hours before your arrival in Greece. The form is online, in English. Once you have completed the form, you will receive a QR code (which you can display either on your mobile phone, or on a printed piece of paper). You will need to show this code to the Greek authorities on your arrival in Greece.

You must wear a face mask at all times when on an aeroplane or ferry travelling to or from Greece; and whilst at airports.

When you arrive in Greece, the Greek authorities will scan the QR code generated when you completed the PLF form, and may direct you for health screening (including testing for coronavirus). The Greek authorities’ instructions will differ according to whether you arrive by land, sea or air. Check out the requirements that will apply to you on the PLF form page.

The Greek authorities may require you to undergo testing for coronavirus, as part of health screening after you arrive in Greece. Any passenger entering Greece is liable to be asked to undergo a test, but you are likely to be asked if you have arrived from a country outside of the EU (including the UK), either directly or via indirect flights. If you are a British national who lives permanently within the EU, or have been in another EU country for some time before travelling on to Greece, you may be asked to prove that you have not recently travelled from the UK.

After testing, you will need to self-isolate at the address given on your PLF form, filled out prior to your arrival in Greece. You will be contacted by the Greek authorities with your test results, and given further instructions (e.g. whether you are free to leave your accommodation, or must self-isolate for a longer period). If your test result is negative, you will no longer need to self-isolate. If your test result is positive, the Greek authorities are likely to ask you to self-isolate in government-provided accommodation for 14 days.

You must comply with all instructions given by the Greek authorities. Failure to do so may result in you being refused permission to enter Greece and / or legal enforcement.’

Can’t blame them in the slightest for being very cautious...
Will just stare at the view via the webcam for this year... it will have to suffice! Good luck to anyone still hoping to go... but the risk is just too great for us. Stay safe Arillas xx

Hi Harold

Dont seem to hear about safe airport scheme lately.
Couldnt really understand the effectiveness of it as said before.
If one  airport is a high risk, what stops somebody  travelling to a low risk airport for departure?

Hope you get there and have a great time

All very concerning if this is how things stand in terms of testing at the airport and if one of you tested positive and had to go into Greek accommodation and self isolate.  A group of 9 of us supposed to be going on the 30th July and it would only take 1 of us to be positive for it to spoil everyone's holiday. Not sure if it is a risk we will take.  Very off putting. ☹

Personally I think for those of us going ( or at least hope to be going) late July onwards, let’s just sit tight and see what we know by July 15th. Things changing daily and weekly. Nobody wants to be quarantining on their holidays whether it is 1 night or 14 nights! Let’s just pray to the Greek gods that in the next couple of weeks that thinks move in our (UK) favour x

Good Luck Jo

Jill & I have decided with all the uncertainty regarding quarantine etc that if Jet2 cancel our flights again then that's it & it wasn't meant to be this Year!!

Like you still clinging on to a glimmer of hope but can't see us rebooking as Jill in particular is worried about the testing/quarantine issues on arrival in Corfu.

Fingers Crossed....……

Hi

Its reported that the SNP could scupper plans for air bridges as Sturgeon has suggested they would boycott the scheme.

This risks the scheme being a non starter as as the scheme is being agreed with other countries on a UK wide basis.
Apparently our Government is in talks with the Scotts.

We will run out of fingers to cross soon

Just been looking at BBC on line news.
Still seems to be no 100% clarity.
Did say that although we would allow travel to some countries it may not be reciprocal and we would have to quarantine on arrival
Said further announcements today

Hi
Update on BBC news on line

People arriving from more than 50 low risk  countries, including France, Spain, Italy and Germany will no longer need to quarantine.
Transport Secretary said a full list of 50+ exempt countries will be published Friday afternoon. Countries will be classified as amber or green.
All amber countries including France Germany Italy and Spain will have reciprocal arrangements in place.
A full list of countries posing a reduced risk will be published later.
The FO is also changing its advice against all but essential travel to a number of countries from Saturday. ( doesn't say what countries)
Scotland still to decide on easing restrictions and is Wales

But who knows it’s changing all the time

Just say yes or no

If saying yes or no was only that easy mate !  Its far more complicated and I am still saying we won't be visiting , I would be amazed ……
The Greeks have got far too much to lose by letting us in with no quarantine after the sterling work they have done so far containing this.
Lets hope I am wrong , I usually am in fairness !

Hi
According to BBC at 15.30 Greece has been added to the safe list. Only England at present.
If Greece accept us it seems ok
The problem is if the government says we can go , but Greece says no , then it seems doubtful you can claim as the tour companies will say it’s not our fault you can’t go as the government has said you can
