Thought it might be fun to see which meals other forum members love in Arillas, the content of these meals and the favoured taverna's.
We tend to sample different restaurants every night, although we definitely have favourites.
Here goes...
1. Mousaka at Brouklis. My husband adores this dish at Brouklis and as sad as it may seem, i just adore the lamb chops!! I swear I have never tasted anything so good!
2. Lasagna and Origano bread at leo's (Arilla Inn)mmmmm....Oh, not forgetting the 'to die for 'baked feta Arilla Inn'
3. Greek salad at Costas on The Beach, dont know what makes it so special but definitely our fave greek salad in resort! Also lovely steaks.
Jo, you have started my mouth watering & my belly rumbling. Anyway here's my list.
1. Spit Roast Lamb at Tria Adelphia. I just love the whole ritual on a sunday. Phillip's dad goes & collects wood for the fire & when started you can smell the lamb cooking all day, served with Eleni's gorgeous roast potatoes & enjoyed with good company its hard to beat.
2. Stamna at the Mirage, I don't know why I prefer it there to anywhere else, I just do!
3. A fish stew I had at the Brouklis, I don't know what it was called as it wasn't on the menu. Apparently it was a traditional Corfiot dish & was very tasty. Dimitri always has this sort of thing cooking but not on the menu, so I recommend asking Dimitri whats cooking!
Without doubt over the years the Stamna at Costas on the beach has been my favourite. Made the real way with no chips in it but the tastiest meat and veg going. As for Ann I know she loves the Lamb chops at Brouklis. They take some beating.
John
Is Stamna the beef stew-like dish? My hubby had that last time at Brouklis I think and said it was lush.
Stamna comes in a round dish which is tipped onto your plate, am ashamed to say I'm not sure if its beef or lamb, think its beef. Layered with potatoes [ yes some places do use chips ], veg [some places use tinned peas & carrots ] & feta cheese , I love it & as per John J's recommendation will try it at Costa on the Beach this year. Only 31 more sleeps.
mmmmmmmm, That sounds lovely. Costas will wonder why he gets special requests for the dish this Summer!
yes the oregano bread is delious at Leo's I could meke this my whole meal and beef stifado yummy. Just worked my last day before hols so i shall be cracking open my first bottle of wine in half an hour one of many
Has to be sardines followed by prawn saganaki at the Brouklis. I will be tucking into the very same in 11 days washed down with a litle kokino kraisi
Ivan
Youre all making me hungry! I just love all the food everywhere in Arillas. Maybe THATS why i never get any thinner! Only 22 sleeps! can't wait. getting excited now. 8)
22 sleeps for us too!
Off Monday.
Definetly, SPIT ROAST LAMB, Sundays at the TRIA ADELPHI,
Roll on August 7th.
nothing will ever beat the roast potatoes and spit roast lamb at Brouklis!! :D
marie xx
Oh my I'm hungry now !!
I haven't been to arillas for many years so don't feel I can comment on the tavernas there now.
My favourtie Greek dishes have to be Stifado, spit roast lamb and kleftiko.
Unfortunately I won't be enjoying any of the gorgeous feta, mousaka or yummy cakes because over the last year-2 years I've become allergic to dairy :( It's going to be so hard !
One memorable holiday was in Crete a few years ago. Hubby loves all the starters more than the main courses so he goes totally mad! We visited this restaurant and he ordered:
Courgette Balls/flowers
Meatballs
Cheese Pies
Greek Salad
Chips
olives
Sanganaki
etc. etc.
You name it he had it. That was just for him!
The next time we went they moved another table over for him... needless to say he did order the same but I shared it with him instead., soooo embarassing. It was so funny, the expressions on the waiters faces when they saw him walk in... it was on your marks!!
My favourites are Stifado, Kleftiko and Gouvetsi oh and Prawn Sanganaki and and and the grill with everything... oh and Kalamari (not the whole squid - yuk), oh and...... I could go on and on.
We dont eat the pizzas or spaghetti as we can have that at home anytime.
We are not really 'afters' people either so the complimentary melon or whatever is enough for us, well you would think so after all the 'befores'!
20 days to go!
didnt have a bad meal anywhere but my fave meal was lamb with fennel at thalassa, which was unusual for me as i dont like fennel.compliments to the chef
My favourite has to be Courgette Keftedes at Dimitris. My children would say that the fresh fried sardines at Dimitris are the best. I just go for the mezes now as I get the best of everything. Dimitri's is definitely the best.
We had arranged to have the sit roast lamb at Bouklis but by the time we got there it had all been eaten
We moaned about this so much when we were at Portofino Spiro did us roast lamb, my God what a meal that was, sure it was a full lamb. I think he thought he was feeding an army, didn't need to have anything the next day.
Jill
Every meal we had was lovely. We have several favourites and could not just pick one. Not long now and then it will be deciding which restaurant again such a hard choice we have to take it in turns and that includes the children as they have favourites as well :D
Best meal has to be the Biftiki at the Brouklis,
Makes my mouth water just thinking about it
Spit Roast Lamb at Brouklis - by far. With Courgette Keftedes to start - yummy! I can taste it now :)
Mon Amour good too and Thalassa for Meatballs in tomato sauce and Italian Salad.
Can't wait for September, 13 weeks and 2 days - not that we are counting!! x
I agree the spit roast lamb was out of this world :D
Just returned from first visit to Arillas - loved it. Ate meany times in Thalassa and Efi's. Although we've been going to many places in Greece for the last twenty years my wife said the fish stew/fish stifado she had in Efi's was the best meal she's ever had in Greece, and we've had lots :)
Thanks to Efi and her mum Katerina for the lovely meals and great hospitality
Agree about Mon Amour.......fab
Ate at most of the choises in Arillas and have never be disappointed. The Graziella is one that stands out,as to the Marvel(ous) Chef special chicken(drooling with the thought). The one place that stands out for us has to be the Arilla inn its just that cut above the rest of the pack, you feel as if you have had that special night no matter what yo,ve ordered 10/10 every time. But every one to there own thats why we all keep going back again & again & again ain,t it :D :D :D :D :D :D
Our favourites by far were the Arilla Inn, Thallassa and Brouklis but if we had to pick one meal it would be without a doubt the Brouklis's - Fried Sardines to start, Spit Roast Lamb with Greek roast potatoes and veg for main and then the red berry cheesecake....mmmmmmmmmmmmm
Not many people seem to mention the Arilla Inn which has always been one of our favourites always eat there the most We agree with aftermidnight man that they always make you feel extra special and we've never had a bad meal in the 8 years that we have been going thereKeep up the good work Leo
Well, we had the biggest meal ever at the Sea Breeze. I had the bbq plate and it was so amazing I had to take a photo! The oil and herb dressing poured over after cooking was fabulous - best taste ever. Mikes favourite was the Pistatsio (spelling?) at the Captains, I have had to cook it at home since . He would eat it everynight! (apart from the english breakfast, even better than mine!). We never had a bad meal in Arillas, all were brilliant!
Big question though! One time at the Captains we ordered Lasange and Moussaka, the police were touring all the restaurants along the road. The waitress told us they were checking that the Lasagne and Moussaka etc were frozen, not home made. How strange! She said it was forbidden to sell homemade food. Does anyone know why? I have my theory that it is to make sure that everyone has a 'bite at the apple' as they say and it keeps it fair for all the restaurants not to have an 'edge' or it could be a health and hygiene thing, but we were a bit bemused by that as most of the stuff is freshly home made anyway in the restaurants.
We were worried that we might be eating 'illegal food' and it might be snatched away from us at anytime. Just let them try!!!
That seems very odd! Im sure that the Brouklis Moussaka and the Arillas Inn'is Lasagne is home made... perhaps the waitress got her english the wrong way round??
She just said that we would have to wait until they had gone and then we could be served our meal. Just that it has to be frozen and theirs isnt... anyway, we did tease her mercilessly everytime we ordered anything to makee sure it was homemade. The police were visiting all the restaurants... Does anyone remember seeing that when they were there recently? I have read about Greek Tourist Police but didnt know they actually checked things out for real.
I can remember the Greek police from a long time ago,on main land greece. What i remember is wherever they went they got everything FREE.(that wouldnt happen in this country)!!!cx ;)
Dimitri you got to make sure you have plenty of sardines for us as we will be back in september, they are the best.
ANG
We stayed at the Marvel Hotel and, having been chatting to Perry in the Coconut about a fabulous meal he had just had in Agios Georgious, we asked Costas and Spiros at the Marvel if they would order in some king prawns and lobsters for us.
Well, what can I say - the biggest prawns I've ever seen on a bed of spaghetti and 2 gorgeous lobsters, cooked to perfection by their mum. Absolutely fantastic!
The table was beautifully laid for us although there was little room for the wine glasses due to the amount of food we had ordered.
Well worth asking them to do this for you - particularly for a special occasion. An evening we'll never forget.
We had a lot of our meals at the Rainbow Bar and the food there is brilliant, never had a bad meal and the service is excellent. Jimmy and Spiros are great hosts and they make you feel very welcome. My favorite starter was saganaki, I tried it at a few other places but nothing came close. My hubby had their fried prawns about 8 times and thought they were amazing.
Just back from Arillas on Monday and have to say one of my favourites was definitely the bifteki stuffed with cheese at Brouklis. The chicken kebab there was also very good. The stamna at Arillas Inn was superb too- in fact I could go on and on and on........... haven't really had any bad meals in Arillas.
Lynda
Of course the Spit Roast Lamb at the Brouklis is fantastic and will always be my favourite
However, I feel must mention the Sea Breeze, it was simply superb when I was there last week. My 3 courses 'meal deal' consisted of a Prawn Cocktail, Pork Slouvaki (the size of this was unbelievable, chips, potatoes, rice, salad, so nice) and delicious chocolate gateaux for dessert. The service was impeccable (perhaps a little slow for some, but who is ever in a rush in Greece) with very friendly staff and the view while you eat is beautiful, make sure you go at Sundown. The best part of all this was the price, 8 Euro's for the above three courses, I actually felt guilty when the bill came, the final total for the two of us was 27 Euro's, that's for 3 courses each, coffee and quite and more than one carafe of wine. Would recommend to anyone.
Joe
Whereabouts is the Sundown, Joe? We're out there this Monday so catching up on all the tips!
Cheers
Pete
We went to the sea breeze and had the set menu, prawn cocktail, bbq with all the extras, I was so full I couldnt eat desert. The plateful was huge and would have fed 4 people. The Chef said come back the next day and he would cook his special Lobster in red wine.... sounded delicious but I knew I wouldnt be able to eat it all.
Hi Pete,
I meant to write sunset, not sundown, it's by far the best time to try the Sea Breeze as the view is awesome. It's also a strange sensation having a road through the middle of the restaurant, it certainly gives the waiters an added challenge :-) try it if you get chance.
Cheers
Joe
Not many people have mentioned Vavillas Fish Restaurant run by Thomas one of the nicest men in Arillas. Not on the main strteet but really well worth a visit great fresh fish and lovely people!
Our favourite place to eat must be at Brouklis. I cannot think of many things better to eat than 'Meze Brouklis' for starter - the courgette keftedes are fantastic. Then of course 'Spit roasted Lamb' with all those potatoes - absolutely gorgeous. we are going this Monday night and I am already wondering how many times Dimitris will put Lamb on special whilst we are there
can't wait
