I ditched Facebook last year, I found it tedious. I had decent conversations with very few, such as Arillas Phil and a local friend who I could speak to in the flesh anyway. Facebook is also used by people as an excuse to be rude as debate seems to be a dieing art.
I alway dip in out of the Arillas forum, usually 2-3 weeks before I go, however I have over 400 days before my next visit and have enjoyed reading peoples experiences on here. I am now hooked again a year early! The forum reflects the people that makes Arillas what it is and long may it continue.
It is also nice that when you do have differences of opinion on here people respect you too.
I have already read some amazing posts and blogs linked to the site and look forward to many more.
I quite agree with you Nick, I have never been a fan of FB. One comment can so easily go viral and cause lots of trouble.

As a Facebook user and one who likes it, I fully respect your right to dislike it. For me, FB is only as bad as the stuff that is posted there. So, I choose to look at it in a positive way. As a medium for debate/discussion, it may not be the best thing. As for keeping in touch with people relatively quickly, it is great. My list of `friends` are a good bunch, who rarely cause discord and I only post to them and not the general population.
Belonging to various Corfiot groups (and others) gives me great joy and the groups that I have chosen to be part of, give me a great variety of topics to keep me interested.
I`ve been on this forum for eight years now and have come to know some great people (who also use FB). So, to reply to your comment that it is `tedious`, I cannot agree. If FB is only used for the purpose of having fun and not being taken seriously, then I feel you can enjoy it immensely.
So, for me, forums and Facebook can operate side by side, albeit each one having differing qualities.
Thanks for starting this debate.

I use FB & Twitter, both for my own purposes & to run accounts for my rugby club. Yes, you see some idiots on there, but that's the same with any public forum, even dare I say it, here!
The cardinal rule that I try to abide to is not to post if I've had more than a bottle of red as it'll take ages to edit out the typo's.
FB specifically is a great way to keep in touch with folk around the world, I've mates in SA, Australia & Italy, all of who I speak to via FB.
It's also a great way to embarass your kids, errant son is 17 tomorrow, & I'll be posting a pic of him when he was 5 :) All good clean fun.
I am Admin on the Arillas Addicts site on FB and can honestly say we have never had any discord on there. I always expect people to be respectful of others points of view. I would soon jump on anyone who breaks this simple rule and maybe even delete them from the group. I find FB to be great to be used as an information platform, with occasional humour and not for washing dirty linen. Anne
Tis all a choice but I never use Facebook as , probably only to me, it seems like a chore. Anyone wanna be nasty about me? Say it on facebook.
However I must be in the minority as many enjoy this way of communication.
I will just stick to the Forum. I am amazed how guys like Anne n Phil , Rachel , Phil n Jen, etc etc find all the time to keep us amused and hold all our interests with their informative postings, blogs, and pictures etc. Plus of course Terry W and others who take the time to put all those links to what we all find useful.
Guys/Gals like this keep all interest alive. Including us non speaking Greek locals. If I wanna know the word on the street , look on the forum.
Tis a nice "little" group we have here and such a mine of information to "newbies" who soon become "olebies"
(Mind you ... Phil was an Old B from the start!! - I can never refuse the chance for a quip or two at someone)

I'm with you on the FB debate Eggy but as others have said, each to their own and the world would be a boring place if we all liked or disliked the same things. If people enjoy something and it's not hurting anyone then that's fine but I too find FB a chore and once had an unpleasant experience using it.
I'm quite happy just using the forum and I shall continue to enjoy reading everyone's great posts and especially 'up dates' on their holidays. All the blogs, wonderful photos and videos are also greatly appreciated!
Keep on posting Forum Friends!

Why is Facebook a `chore`? I don`t understand that comment. As people have said, each to their own - the one`s who like it won`t consider it that way.
Paul
Like I said Paul D...'I'... find FB a chore for my own personal reasons...sorry if you don't understand the comment but as I also said, if you enjoy FB then that's great!
Suzy X
Hi, Suzy. If you like FB, then it`s no `chore` - if you don`t go on there, it`s still not a `chore`. :-)
Paul
You've got me there Paul...!
I'll just continue not to use FB and then it will never become a chore...to me.
Suzy X
I was on facebook , for a short while, many years ago. It became , for me a daily routine and then became unpleasant reading a few things that were posted.
It was an unpleaaant chore , for me ,which I chose to chop out.
It suits many but didn't suit me and then became an unpleasant and hard task to close my account.
So , yes a chore at the time, for me, but not any more.
But , as Paul D says , if you enjoy then - I am sure it's not a chore as you go back for more. - Small rhyme there to lighten the topic.
Cheers

...and I'm liking the rhyme Negg!

It has it uses which you have pointed out perfectly, I think it took over my life a bit so I decided to leave it alone! I do twitter though for promotional tools it's best for that.

I NEVER type when drinking red, if I do you'll be able to tell! I don't even notice the typos.
I must seem like I have been drinking red all the time then! Always making typos but this is more to do with not putting my glasses on - honest!
This Old B uses both because I can stay in touch with many people who don't use both. I made the mistake of using forum as a social media site, so I now try hard not to post everything I might say in a conversation at say, the Bow or the Nut. OK, I don't always succeed.....
I still read everything on here, and am so glad to see others posting more and more. Couldn't care less about typos.....
Anyone who sees my Facebook timeline will see that it is almost entirely devoted to matters Arilliac, which is how I want it. I have almost never been the subject of personal attacks on either FB or forum, but understand how painful that can be.
In the end, I could live without both, but I could not live without Arillas itself.

I think 3 posts were deleted but they were slightly off topic! :)
Lots of posts off topic but rarely deleted ?

I think I miswrote the post...I think it came across like a dig at Facebook, what I was trying to say was how you get a community spirit on the forum which I haven't found on Facebook.
It was misread and the post, including my reply, were deleted. All the posts were polite though. Just a difference of opinion. Perhaps better to end the topic there. :)
Fair play sometimes best to let things lie
I understand that you may want this debate put to bed - I have no problem with that. I respect our differing opinions. What I do find strange, however, that some of the discussion has gone missing.
So, John, you are right - you did miss something. Cannot understand why the thread`s been altered. Anyway, not to worry. :-)

Possibly because a comment was made regarding one of the hotels in Arillas Paul?
I must say Nick, hats off to you for being so gracious.

Thank you. I just thing the other gent is extremely passionate about the place, and I can't blame anyone for that...after all that's why we all go back so often.
I agree with you Glenny, so gracious.
Phil
I agree too - you are a true Gentleman Nick x
well handled Nick. everyone is entitled to their opinion without being negated for it.
Off subject a tad and being someone who is not really keen on spending to much time in front of a laptop can someone tell me if Trip Advisor is classed as a "Facebook" or "Forum"?
I am told that there are, quite often , bad reviews about a Taverna/Bar etc and recently a very popular snack bar had a terrible review which when checked found it had come from a nearby competitor. I just wonder what measures they have in place to monitor/check any "fake" reviews.
Same goes for Amazon where any product, I think, can be reviewed.
Negg
The review of the hotel in question was not a fake review, and from the writers admission it was an unfair review, but that single review could stop potential new customers. When I see people work hard, and cook great food (possibly the best in Arillas) and I also know that no body who works there can be rude to customers, I will do whatever it takes to defend them.
I also don't think that posts should be deleted without any post or message to say why.
Now back to Facebook
Eggy - I don't think Trip advisor is classed as either forum or facebook. I have often thought it is not fair however how fake reviews can be put on trip advisor. I also have heard of disgruntled sacked staff putting on bad reviews. You can usually tell the fake reviews as they have just 1 review, a bit like some of posts sometimes put on this forum. I think the best way for businesses to deal with this is to sign up to have the right to reply but unfortunately I think they have to pay a fee for this. The other way around it I think would be that you have to be given a code by the owner on the day when you visit that is an exclusive code that can only be used or known if you have actually visited the place you are reviewing. The code should also be changed on a regular basis - say weekly but the problem is I think that would take too much work to administer. Trip advisor is like most things in that it is a great tool if it is used properly but it always has to be borne in mind that everyone's experience and opinions can vary. I have visited restaurants and had a great experience and yet it may have some bad reviews. Similarly I have visited restaurants that have had a good reviews but have had a bad experience. It's great if everyone plays fair but unfortunately not everyone does.
I use Trip Advisor in both a professional & personal capacity. It's dead easy to spot reviews put in by either the owners of disgruntled ex employees. As a rule of thumb, if a business has more than 30 reviews, & only 1 is poor then ignore the poor review. Bad service / food can happen for many reasons. If there are less thank 1/2 dozen reviews then make your own mind up.
Thanks guys for this. Something I forget sometimes. Look at the "good"and the "bad" and the number of posts etc. etc.
I think I am too guilty of whizzing in and out of posts etc and not reading the full story.
I do this on Amazon quite a bit so maybe a step back and look at the percentages.
Anyway that's it. Sensible/serious and inquisitive head will now removed and usual head returned for the future.
Cheers again
Negg
I'm not sure whether Trip advisor is a forum or not. However as the review was mine I can assure everyone that I am not a competitor. I had two poor experiences at the venue which is a shame, and I respect Terry for wanting to defend it, I would in quite honestly do the same.
Remember Trip advisor is peoples experiences as they happen, not necessarily reflective as the place as a whole, I can't say a place is great if it isn't anymore than I'd say a place is poor if it's fantastic. Please take time to read my other reviews, I am very careful about what I write. I know the influence of Trip advisor and the fact people don't read everything could be detrimental. I have no reason to say food and service was bad if it wasn't.
I would encourage people to read the 54 positive reviews written since my review to see that my experience was just unfortunate not the norm.
I would happily go back to Horizon and I promise if I have the experience the majority have there I will gladly leave a great review.
