Hi all,
new to this so bear with me. my family and i are visiting for 3 weeks at the end of july/Aug 2006. my kids are mainly still young (6-12) and are not always the quitest about (they are good at times, honest) so can anyone suggest the best places to go for meals etc.
Also has anyone stayed in the Makris apts that sleep 6 and if so can they let me know what the accom is like.
thanks
Mike
To the Travers clan,I am sure you will love Arillas and your family will be welcome at any of the restaurants there. Arillas is quite a family oriented place no one will look strangely at you for having boisterous children. We have stayed at Makris a couple of times, once in 1 of the large apartments. I think there are only 2 that sleep 6 though I could be wrong. 1 has many balconies but is up a steep flight of stairs and the other is ground floor and just has the balcony by the front door. They are both spacious, and, the family there are very welcoming, enjoy, Carol

hi Mossey,
Are you staying at the Makris?
My sister and her family stayed there last year(we were at Nikos) and their apartment was very spacious- 2 bedrooms. The pool was rarely busy and there was generally a very relaxed atmosphere around the place.

yes, hope it's going to be ok, bit of a mine field , this booking of holidays! went to Arillas must have been about 10 years ago, wonder if changed much, think it's a bit of a trek from the airport though, have you done anything about car hire? got good price over internet, from Arillas, but they wanted deposit, and to send credit card details, not very keen to do this!
No we haven`t looked at taxis as there are 6 of us and we would need 2.I beleive the transfer is about 1 hour so a taxi would not save us a massive amount of time. We have not stayed at Arillas before but booked after reading this forum,i am sure we won`t be dissappointed.look forward to meeting you there.

I should be easy to spot, be the one sat with the G&T, who keeps saying this is the life!
We aim to pick up a taxi as it is such a long transfer. You can book online. There is another link under taxi on this site and you can find the email address. Very useful!

We have stayed in the Makris 3 years running I believe the first time was in a 2 bed appt and it was very spacious. The 2 following years we rented 2 appts and put my 2 eldest ones next door which worked well didnt have such a fight for the mirror. Bit of a walk to the sea front where most of the restaurants are so make sure you take a torch for the dark walk back. We are going in June and staying at Anna's which is worth a look if you are out walking. Enjoy ya holiday.

hi, how long is the walk to the sea front front from the Makris then, answer in real time please, not brochure talk, thanks
Steve
hi as far as i can remember prob around 15 mins walk thats leisurely seeing as you on holiday its not a bad walk to the beach as its mainly downhill bit more tyresome on the way back especially night time after a few beers take a cardigan as it can be a chilly walk :?

Thanks, also hiring jeep for 4 days, can you recommend any days out, pretty drives nice beaches etc around the Arillas area.
Hi, Mossey, if you go to this sites homepage and scroll to the bottom you will see that a map is being made. If you click on that you will see a handwritten map of all the places in Arillas and Makris is there, we are staying in the Galini which is just around the bend. I found this helpful to see where everything is..

My fiance and I are staying at the Makris from 26th June for 2 weeks and really looking forward to it :)
Will make my report when we return but from what people have said so far it seems lovely!
We are currenlty undecided about whether to get a taxi to transfer because I remember it being a very long journey (2-3 hours). I'm unsure about booking one in advance, so I think we'll try our luck when we get there and have spoken to the rep on arrival.
We're also keen to hire a car - but again don't want to book one in advance incase our plans change. Is there a good rental place based in Arillas ?
Hi, just back from Makris yesterday was there for a week. The apartments were spotless and bigger than I expected, definatly value for money. There was a seperate kitchen which was adequate for what we needed. The Grandson loved the pool although he was the only one brave enough to get in there although it did warm up by mid afternoon. Although we have been going to Arillas a number of years this was our first stay there, we normaly stay down at Portofino so it was a completly different kind of holiday. Only down side for me was we couldn't stay at Coconut Bar as late as we normaly do as Calum was a bit nervous of the dark walk back. By the way must thank Kostas and Maria from Coconut for our lifts back the late nights we did stay out. Hope you enjoy your holiday there as much as we did.
That's good to know :) Thanks.
What things do you get in the kitchens there ?

hi, looking forward to your report staying there in Aug, have already hired a jeep for 4 days through Arillas rent a car,( not paid money in advance, not keen on giving credit card details!, they were happy with this) they are going to deliver to the Makris , and pick up, prices they gave wre fiat punto 4 days 166euros, 7=284, jeep 4=237, 7= 407, thought it best to book as going out in Aug, but worth you sending them an e mail, (info@arillas_rentacar.com) att Theo. Have a good time!
Cheers Mossey, that's great info ! :) Prices seem good too :)
I will definitely drop them a line, but I think we'll wait until we get there to book. You never know how you're going to feel once you get there do you - might just wanna sit on the beach for the full 14 days
I'll try to get some decent pics of the accomodation - something I wish tour operaters would do a better job of.

have got some pics, that have been sent to me by some that has stayed there, if you want sent me your e mail address and i can them to you, also have a look on the main forum, under general info , there is a topic about halfway down about accommodation photos and people putting them on a website.
Hi Lozicle
I also have some photos which I took last week, if you send me your email address I will forward them to you.
The kitchen has an oven, kettle, cutlery, crockery, glasses, table and chairs and fridge. I have to admit we ate out alot as it was cheaper than buying odds and ends from the local supermarket. In the apartment we had there was a balcony looking out over the pool area and you could see the sea in the distance, scenery is great. There is a pool side bar which is open until the last person leaves. It was still quiet last week and Calum was the only child staying there, it was very quiet and peaceful. There are a couple of swings near the entrance for the kids. I did notice the pool man there every morning cleaning the pool of all the dead bugs etc. As I previously said the only down side was the walk back on a night, I would definatly recommend these apartments from our experience. If I wasn't going to stay at Portofino in September I would go back to the makris.
Let me know if you want the photos sent
Jill
we are staying there for 2 weeks from the 19th June - can't wait glad to hear that children like it as we have got 2!
Hi Georgina
the only thing I would ask you to watch out for is that the pool doesn't have a special childrens area so supervision is needed at all times. Calum is 8 and managed no bother near the steps and aroud the edges which was raised but the middle and the end away from the steps could be an issue.
Jill
Thanks Mick and Jill and Mossey. I'd love the photo's if you wouldn't mind sending them over. I'll pm you both with my email address :)
Thanks for the descriptions too - I really can't wait now.
Georgina - sounds like we'll be arriving in your second week :)
Thanks for the phot's Mossey - they were really helpful :) We'll definitely get some more at the end of June for you :)
Mossys photos were great, much better than the Manos brocure!!
We have decided to get a taxi as even in Oct last year when the island was mostly closed we had to do the round trip thing which took 3 hours....in the heat with 2 young children and havingt got the the airport at 5am it seems like 45euros that will be well spent.

glad you liked them, can't take credit for them though, they are what people have sent to me, just passing them on. The transfer from the airport does seem to be a bit long winded, so many have complained and made comments about it, not a good way to start a holiday!
HI, we're going to makris 19 june for 2 weeks. We've been to arillas a couple of times, last time we stopped at Galini which I gather is a similar distance to the sea/restuarants/bars etc. Glad to read good reports of Makris. From people we've spoken to before I think most accomodation is of a reasonable to good standard anyway. Lots of people return year on year but stopping at different places.
Car hire & scooter hire is easily available, certainly in June but you can always walk over to San Stefanos if you're unlucky. A couple of hire places there & they will deliver & collect. Journey from airport is very trying as Arillas is usuallyu last stop so taxi is good option.
Thanks for your photo's too Jill. They were great. I can't wait to get over there.
And I think we'll be getting a taxi too, make the most of the day :)
Hi, sorry the photos were just of the pool side and pool bar but you can tell by those how clean the place is. Only took video of the inside of apartment on my phone and wouldn't know how to send them.
 Jill
Hi Jill,Thank you so much for sending us your holiday pictures. They do give you a much better idea what there like.(in the broucher there arnt even any sunbeds around the pool). We,ve been showing everyone.(is it you in the pool?)Thanks again.cx
Hi Carol, wasn't sure if you had received pictures as had report from the mail demon
There was plenty of sun loungers, not many guests when we were there so no problems with that. No it isn't me in the photo the pool was to cold for me, I'm a wimp.
Jill
Hi Steve,THANK YOU very much for the pictures of the Makris.I hope we get a sea view. With a balcony. Thanks again for taking the time sending them to us.carolx

We've just come back from the Makris and it was wonderful. We had a balcony on the top floor at the front looking over the pool with a view all the way to the sea. Breath taking. We've taken some pictures too so I'll try to get them uploaded somewhere.
Only thing I will say is if you're staying upstairs with a balcony room, beware if you don't like bats. :) There are ALOT and they live in the gaps between the ceiling and the roof tiles and hundreds of them descend out every night around 9pm. Wasn't a problem for us because we love them, my fiance even has 2 bat tattoos. :)

Taxi or coach from airport, how long?
We went on the coach and it was direct to arillas.
An hour tops.
Just ask your rep in the airport if you're going direct. And if not, grab a taxi :)
Hi Lozicle,We found your post on BATS very interesting,we,ve seen bats in Arillas before but we,ve never shared a balcony with them. The kids are having a fit.Personally i dont care,i want your room.(the one with a view of the sea)15 days to go.cx :) :)
Hehe well like I said they definitely kept the mozzies down !

Hello again,
Got back monday after 3 great weeks at the Makris. the accomodation and atmosphere were superb, the family made us feel really welcome. Many thanks to Carol,Rob and family and also Mossey and Bev (plus Becky) it was really nice to meet you all and we enjoyed your company tremendously.
we`ve just booked for next year and are already counting down the days (348 sleeps). look forward to seeing you again sometime and also anyone from this forum we missed this time around.
Mike & Debbie
Just booked to go to Makris next May never been to Corfu before, from this site they sound very nice anyone got any pictures, what are the tavernas like, we like greek food we went to Kefalonia this year and are going back there next year as well,
we wanted to try another greek island.
Just got Back from makris aoertments had a lovely relaxing week with the best family hosts we have come across nothing was to much trouble . the apartments were lovely and clean we had afirst floor by the pool area. Helanna , Maria and Mum were brilliant we were takin in to Sisara to look arond but dont like all the English pubs etc.
Arillas was very Greek to us and we had lovely wlks around to the other villages
would go back again but would only stay in Arillas as didnt like other places we visited to comercial for us.
Hi Nanasue,
Glad you had a wonderful time. The Makri family really do make you feel welcome and as you say nothing is too much trouble. We cannot wait until August when we are due to return.
mike & Debs
I am staying at the Makris in a few weeks time with my family. Has anyone got the Makri family's telephone number as I would like to ask them a couple of questions? Also, would anyone be kind enough to show a few holiday snaps of the apartments(inside, outside, views from front and back) as there arent many on the internet?
Hi Woody,
send me your e-mail address and i will send some photos of the large apts (sleep 6). Are you staying in these or the smaller ones? What dates are you there, where are you flying from?
Mike
Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I have sent you my email address(I think; not used to these forums). I presume the smaller room, as there are just three of us. We are arriving on 20th Aug for 2 weeks from Newcastle and hiring a car. Both my wife and I have been to Corfu before(before we met with respective friends)but only to the busy places. Maturity has set in so thought we would visit a quiter place with our son. Hope all will be great- sounds like it from all reports. I would like to try and get in touch with the owner of these apartments but I cant find their number . Is there any air con in the rooms? my wife is worried about the bats situation so I gather it would be best to try and keep off the top floor?woody

Lol n need to worry about the bat situation. They only come out at night and you aren't aware of them because they flit out at such high speed. We only managed to catch one of camera because we sat there for about an hour and took and 50 photos lol. And then we were lucky hehe.
Anyway - as promised :) .....

We didn't get any proper pictures of the bedroom but they were a very good size. (3 single beds). There was Air con but it was on a pay as you go basis.
Hope these are helpful !!!
We stayed there some years ago, when there was a goat at the front. No pool etc. It was lovely. The bats aren`t a problem to people. The just scoot off out in the evening, and zoom back later.
Lozicle,
the photos are great thanks. cant wait to get there! it looks really clean. worried about the pool table for my son as I will never get him off!! I will have to practice before we go :)
how much was the air con? did you use it much? with the temperatures at the minute I cant imagine not using it.
i appreciate the time you have taken to add these for me and to allay some fears about the bats!your a star!
