Title: Half marathon training
Post by: Bigvee on July 03, 2012, 11:38:09 AM
Hi there,

Holidaying in Afionas for a week at end of August which is 4 weeks before my first ever half marathon.

This is not good planning!

Anyway - aside from getting up really early or running at night, is there a hotel with a gymn and treadmill in Arillas that non residents can use?

Thanks

BV

Good luck with your first half marathon.  I did my first half at the end of May this year - fantastic feeling.

If it was me, I would get up early a couple days in the holiday and take plenty of water with me.  You don't need to be doing it everyday after all and you don't have to be doing a long run each time either.

Hope all goes well.

Hi BV

Don't know of any place,in Arillas, or locally that will have these facilities.
But I do know a guy in Agios Stephanos who does weight training. I will pick his brain when I see him.

You could try google on Hotels in Roda/Acharavi but these places are a 20 minute drive from Afionas. Only other fitness centres, I think, would be in Corfu Town.

I did a 10k a few years back (great manchester run) in about 60 mins,  but haven't done the half marathon (yet). I came away on hols the week afterwards and walked up the hill to afionas from arillas which was a hell of a work out!  If it were me I'd just walk down the hill a bit and try to jog back up, perhaps using intervals.

Ok thanks all - i suppose there is always beach running at 7pm / 8pm but assume still very warm at that time of day? Only need to do 3 runs.

Hi Bigvee,
If you did nothing for the week you'd be fine. I have done nine 1/2 marathons now (will be 10 come Saturday) and I was really paranoid about missing any training for the first few but honestly you will be fine . A week off will do you no harm at all , in actual fact it could do you the world of good!
Enjoy your holiday and the race !

The Gym , in Sidari, is still open.

It's above the first Chinese Restaraunt, on the right hand side.
