Well first of all, happy new year to everyone on here!
We have been visiting Arillas since 2001 and apart from our first time when we stumbled upon this gorgeous spot as a last minute deal, have gone independently, booking usually through Ina.
We are seriously considering taking the car and going across land and staying a longer time than usual.
Has anybody any experience of doing it this way?
Also, where might we book, should we travel this way , which would allow for maybe three or four weeks?
We would welcome any thoughts!
By the way, missed the virtual parties....DAMN!
markanddee did it last year, so it might be worth pm them to ask more details :)
Thanks EEG x
We have reserched the overland journey and the start point is dependant where you live in the UK, If you intend going from Dover we have been told to go to Basle in Switzerland across to the Italian boarder and catch a ferry from Venice or Ancona. The Ancona ferry trip I beleive is at least 4 hours shorter.
the shipping line we intend to use in May is Anek Lines, email address www.anek.gr
We are also told it is cheaper to buy the ticket across at the dock side not on the net. We hope this is of some help.
Happy new year to everone.

When we did it (-about 18 years ago), we decided to just play it by ear and didn't pre-book anything. The only problem with doing it this way was that we arrived at Ancona on the Monday evening (I think) to find there weren't any ferries to Corfu until Wednesday. So we drove down to Brindisi and got an overnight ferry, which was lovely, calling in at Paxos and others, around dawn, and arriving in Corfu at about 6.30 a.m.
We did have the car stolen in Brindisi whilst waiting for the ferry and didn't see it ever again but we did discover Arillas as a consequence - another story.
They are two lovely stories juliej and angiem.
Jen and me have met julie and graham (luvvers we enjoyed it - in the Rainbow with old boy David, and Spiros and Dimitris and others from the forum. And then in Thalassa but without Giannis and Litsa in 2008. But Spiros looked after us, didn't he!)
Angiem we will meet you one day soon.
Keep the Arillas stuff going
happy new year

I asked Eileen about this, and she gave me loads of info(thanks again Eileen.) We intend to drive, but as we are taking things for our house over, we are avoiding Switzerland. We think we will go from Dover to Dunkirk, then overland via Austria to Venice, then ferry from there to Corfu. The difficult bit is estimating times for booking everything...
If you do a route map, it's a great help, and tells you how long it will take to reach each place. The ferry costs when we looked were very reasonable, tho not working out cheaper than flights, but a great way to go if you can do a long holiday. (Also a great adventure)... Good luck.
thanks for that Maggie and good luck to you! x

I think we nearly did
this year, Phil. We arrived July 21st and just missed you I think.
(mines a Metaxa and coke - just for future reference!! lol.)

You're right angiem - that was the day we went abroad... will remember the order!
As for overland, I can't imagine the driving any more. I rarely get past Glastonbury (4 miles away!) these days. And with EJ from Bristol, we're sorted!
