Title: Vassilos fish restaurant
Post by: georgia on September 02, 2008, 10:32:25 PM
Hi all,
We are visiting lovely lovely Arillas again the third week in September. This will be our first visit in 3 years. We have such happy memories of fantastic holidays there and wonderful evening meals with a jug of red wine .
Can anyone tell me if Vasillos fish restaurant is still there, that was one of our favourites, yet have not seen it mentioned by anyone on Arillas forum.
We are staying at Mathraki this time, always stayed at Bardis Sun Hotel on past visits, but seems no tour operator deals with it anymore only the Bardis Studios?
We found it to be a lovely hotel, however will be lovely to be back in Arillas..counting down the days.

The fish restaurant is still open we ate there three times this year.  It was quite busy and we had fantastic meals at a very reasonable price.  Such a lovely family.

Hi Georgia, We shall be there the third week, we leave on the 25th and staying at the Bardis Sun Hotel.  We booked independently with Dorita by phone, but I did hear she is taking Chzeck visitors so I dont know if she is also using a tour operator.  This will be our first visit at the Hotel and we are looking forward to it.

The fish restaurant is lovely and we had fond memories of the wine too!

Not being a fish lover I was a bit reluctant to go to Vassilos but when we went I loved  the swordfish. I love the taste, just the bones that put me off. Must try more fish next time we are there.
Potatoes, whats all that about Sharon ?

Diane, you must have the boiled potatoes, when you go tell them you want Georgias potatoes with your meal, they are delicious, blondegirl will tell you.   Its Vavilas fish restaurant round the corner from Bardis isnt it.

Vavilas Fish Taverna opened in 1992, Thomas and his family opened the restaurant with a lady called Alexandra who owned the next apartment up from the restaurant, and a young man called Yianni (Sea Breeze Yianni) was one of the waiters.
We were there for the opening night, what a night that was, I asked for a starter of squid for myself as my wife and daughter didn't want one, Thomas said there wasn't any left so I just asked for the main meals.
A gentleman on the next table who was from Newcastle asked me to help him with his plate full of squid (which he had as a starter) and was filling up much to the merriment of his family, so I did my duty.
When Thomas came out with our meals he also brought out 3 red snapper on a plate as a gift because he had run out of squid. Well, neither my wife or daughter liked the look of the snapper looking back at them, so with nobody offering to help me out with the snapper and my fish meal, I duly started. I eventually managed to finish the lot, it must have been about 2am, we had arrived at 2030hrs.
Vavilas Fish Taverna earned a happy tongue in cheek nickname of 'Faulty Towers', this was due to them having just started up in business and sometimes running out of items, but all the time it was with a smile and a apology.
Since then these 2 young boys (Thomas and Yianni) have been like sons to my wife and me, it has been a honour and a privilege to see them and a lot more of the people in Arillas grow up into what they are now, some of the best people in the world.
This is my favourite fish eating place and I will be there soon. If you are adventurous try the 'Scorpion fish', a Corfoit speciality.
We have had many wonderful meals with sometimes several jugs of wine there, and can recommend it to everyone. And yes the potatoes are something else, as Sharon says, mmmmmmmmmmmm.
SharonF, when Thomas sees me he also shouts something, but as it is not an adult only site I will keep that until later.
See you all soon, Mick

PS. Nowadays I have trouble just to manage the 3 snappers and wine.  ;-)

Thats a really lovely story Mick.  I heard he cooks Scorpion fish though I have never had it myself.  I had Sea Bream last time as that was all he had, perhaps it depends on what he manages to catch that day.  Whatever I have had has always been good.

Yes lovely story Mick and I can verify that Mick is indeed Thomas' "second dad" as Thomas proudly told us when we were there with Mick and Mary last september.

I havent had the scorpion fish either, will try that when we go next time.

Thanks Mick

Love Sharon xx

Just picked up on this thread and it is so lovely to hear all of your memories of this place.

I shall be going in 1 week and 6 days (who's counting) and it sounds definitely like the sort of place we like to eat in as we all love fish.  Where is this restaurant situated in the resort.  Definitely don't want to miss a night there.

Thanks

Debs

If you go on the maps you can see it is just around the corner from the Sea Breeze and the Bardis Sun Hotel, keep walking up the road and its on the left.

Deb, look out for these boards,

The Scorpion fish is cooked with hot, or very hot chillies, do not have it very hot unless you like your mouth burnt to a crisp. Thomas will tell you this before he will let you have one. It is great but you must like hot spicy food.
Sharon I can confirm that it goes down well with his wine, so you will be ok :-)

See some of you soon, Mick

Deb, just seen your other post saying that you are stopping at Tria Adelphia (our Arillas home), to get to Vavills Fish Taverna as you come out of Tria turn left and take the left hand fork, you will find Vavilas about 7/800 yards on your right.
Enjoy, Mick.

Thanks to everyone who sent me the glad tidings that Vassillos is still there! I so enjoyed our meals there and smile when remembering two of the owners cats sitting on the unoccupied chairs at our table. My husband has a strong dislike of cats, positively a dog person...but Arillas had worked its destressing magic, as had the red wine and a Metaxa, and he fed the little buggers his fish skin..could not believe my eyes!! Have never seen him tolerate a cat before in over 20yrs of marriage!
Roll on Sept 19th cannot wait.
I just hope the great weather holds, we have witnessed some lovely sunshine there but also some amazing storms, strong winds, road outside Inas flooded and my husband ever the gent carrying 2 old ladies in their 70's over the flood..and he did his back in they were big girls!!

Mick / BG

Thanks for the info.  Really looking forward to it now I know that it is within staggering distance of 'home'

Thanks for the tip about the spices.  We like spicy food, but not so it kills all the taste buds!!
