Title: Donkey Santury
Post by: vivian on July 14, 2008, 05:15:34 PM
As some of you will know I am very concerned about these poor donkeys thatJudy takes in to her donkey rescue. We need help urgently, a family have had a house built next door and asked for the donkeys to be moved, the council have agreed to this and only given Judy a few days. When she tried to talk to them she was told to tye the donkeys to a tree and leave them.
There is an on line pertition going and I would like to ask you all to have a look and then if you wish to you can sign it. You will find it ay Agni Travel on message board General holiday questions, title Can we save the donkey santury. Please Please read it and if you feel likeme sign it now, as we only have a little time left. Thanks Viv

Here is a copy of an email I received from Judy a few days ago.  Unfortunately I cannot attach the petition (I don't know how to!)but if you are concerned then please do as Judy suggests and drop and email to the people she mentions below....

"On 7th July, the Mayor of Paleokastritsa informed us that the Corfu Donkey Rescue is going to be 'sealed' within 20 days and 40 donkeys are going to be thrown out.  It is the job of the local authorities to collect abandoned donkeys but they never did their job.  CDR has been doing it for 5 years with no help or backing from government.  Now the shelter is threatened with closure.

We are within months of securing land purchase but this takes time as we need to get licenses and planning permission and then fence and build stables. All of you, who know Corfu, know this takes forever!  The authorities say they cannot give us any time.  They are receiving so much pressure from only one neighbour who refuses to be patient.

The authorities totally under estimate the popularity of the work done by the shelter volunteers.  They under estimate the popularity of it for the tourists and even the Greek people themselves.  We are known all over Greece and world wide.  So rare is it to have a donkey shelter in Greece they cannot even categorize us.  We believe that common sense will prevail and all we ask for is more time to prepare a new place for the donkeys.

To help our cause please could you download the petition and collect many signatures. Then post it back to me before 21st July.     To Judy Quinn at Box 5210, Liapades, Kerkyra.  We haven't got much time so please do it now before you forget.

It would also help if you could send very polite emails to the addresses below.  Just a sentence to show your support of the work done at the shelter and ask them to give us the necessary time.

Mr Stefanos Poulimenos (Governor of Corfu)  grafeionomarxi@kerkyra.gr

Paleokastritsa Municipality (The shelters in this region)  paleomun@otenet.gr

Thank you so much for your support.  We can only do this work because you have helped us in the past.  Please continue that support and we can go into the future

Judy

Thanks so much Viv for highlighting this & bringing it to everyone's attention.

Sorry, only just found this, (and signed the petition before I realised it was too late!)

So, where are the donkeys right now, and how long can they stay there?

How can I make contribution? I am coming to Arillas in 3 weeks, where are the collection boxes in the village?

Great piece of news to read... loved the bit about the "angry emails etc" and the fact that he was so surprised of the reaction about the care of 40 donkeys.

Those poor old things look pretty bad.  We "adopted" a donkey years ago for our children.  It had three legs and was called Lucie.  Unfortunately our youngest was not impressed when she was born and named after a 3 legged donkey!  I liked the name though!

Anyhow, I am pleased there was a positive reaction.  Well done! and POWER TO THE DONKEYS TOO!

Whilst visiting the Night Owl in June we saw one very old donkey who had spent many years working hard for her owner(not the nice people of own the night owl),she was there on a kind of respite have a bit of a break,a day or so later we decided to pop up to the Night Owl so on the way we made a point of buying some nice big juicy apples for her,but when we arrived she had gone her owner had taken her back. The nice people at the Night Owl who's 2 boys loved the first donkey decided that they would get another to care for so they had bought another donkey who again showed signs of a hard working life, he was a little more skitty but enjoyed his apples......

So the result of seeing these donkeys and the plight of the Donkey sanctuary has spurred me on to making a donation today, every little helps toward the 150,000 Euro and its easy if you have a paypal account and my good deed for the day, I will make a special trip to visit the next time we are in Arillas.

Hi Sharon. I followed the link on Viv's post near the top of this page to their website and the donation link is on there. had no problem at all. You need a Paypal account though, but that's easy to set up. The link to that is on the donations page too

Well done Sharon, I hope you got the same thank you e-mail as I did, if everyone who has read this topic and is a forum member just made a simple small donation it would help and when next in Arillas could visit with an apple or two, sometimes we are all too busy to worry or even care about such things as we all have bigger things to contend with, but I tell you what I felt good today about my donation as I know that all being well I may see the result, okay it may only be a donkey to some and whats the big deal, but today for me it has ment something

Ang, yes I got an email from Judy today.  I mean to visit the sanctuary last time, but will really try next time we are there.  Agree with all you say, a little can mean a lot.

Did you ever see the donkey in Sidari, the poor little thing had to stand all day in the heat, with a loaf of bread, and its owner sat begging.  I took it an apple and it devoured it.  It hasnt been there the last two times we drove through so hopefully it has been retired.

Like Ang says a little bit from everyone can go so far, and Viv thanks for highlighing this and Terry for the websites.

HI Viv,

Visited it last week.  Have done a report about it in back to arillas, my story thread.  Should have put it on here really.

Anyway, what a fantastic place.  She is amazing and the donkeys are gorgeous, i had my arms around them from the start.  Everybody must try and make the effort to go and visit, and donate!

Saw the foal you posted a photo on here when it was first born.

My heart was in my mouth and i could barely speak at first, the tales are so sad but then arent they happy and loved now.

Would love to spend at least a day there next year helping out, she reckons they will be in the new place well by then, so good luck Judy.
