Title: Staying over the summer
Post by: Melissa_x on July 07, 2008, 05:01:53 PM
Im 18 years old, have 4,500 pounds in the bank to spend on whatever I wish. I have no children, live at home with my family, Im in a dead end job and hate it. :) I really want to be somewhere else and just get away from it all. I have nothing to hold me back here so I think now would be the best time in my life to go away for a while. I'd love to stay In Corfu for the summer, maybe not this year, but next year, or even longer than the summer and see how it would work out. It sounds stupid but its my dream and Arillas especially, seems perfect. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas of where to start. I go over to Arillas on Friday for two weeks, do you think I should look for jobs and possibly somewhere to stay then? Or is it not worth bothering because maybe theres nothing going? I really want to stay In Arillas but obviously need a job to support myself, and whilst Ive got a bit of money behind me maybe I should just go for it? Please could I have some opinions and some help if possible? Thanks :)

Lucky you! Go for it I say while you can. If you are going over soon for a holiday it is an ideal opportunity to ask around for jobs for next year. If anyone takes you on, they would probably help you with accommodation too. The only problem you may find is that the bar/taverna owners are used to loads of young people having a good holiday there and saying they want to work there the following season....so you may have to convince them you really mean it. Good luck!

I know thats what Im worried about, or they promise me a job so I go over next year and they've forgotten about me! I dont care what job I have to do - even if Im the new donut man, or have to work all day and all night! Its gotta be better than here. Its a scary idea for me because itll be the 1st big thing Ive ever done on my own!

Hi ya Melissa,

Yes indeed! Go for it girl and even though it wont be a holiday but hard work at times I am sure you will enjoy it. The busier resorts are likely to have more jobs going so I would check them out.

I have done it myself: http://www.arillas.com/page/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,165/topic,1498.0/lang,en

Sooooo much fun :D

That sounds great, I wish there was someone to come with me it'd probably be a lot easier! Is the accomodation reasonably priced compared to the average wage over there?

I was lucky in that sense because the carhire company that I worked for put us girls up in a flat. There was just a little update for the story and you can read it in my blog:

Ive asked him but he says hes happy here, plus we argue quite allot so I dont think we're comitted to eachother enough to move away together. Im going to venture further than Arillas this time and have a look whats going in the busier place like you say, fingers crossed!

I wouldn't wait until next year if I were you, strike while the iron's hot, you never know what's around the corner. I was in a similar position in Ipsos in 1990, I even had a bar job offerred to me and one of my mates was living there and working as a DJ anyway, I came home because of the girl I was seeing at the time, the next year my situation was different and I've regretted it ever since!

The advice about going to the busier resorts to look for work is right, it is easier to find work there but you have to weigh that up with the job you'll be doing and how and where you want to spend your time there, bar jobs are great fun but hard work and the hours can be long.

Live each day as if it's your last, one day you'll be right!

What kind of work do you do at home?  If you do hairdressing that might go down well, be a mobile service especially for special occasions there like weddings etc.,  also in San Stef there is a new hairdressers (recommended by Brenda from here) and might take you on (english apparently).  Or manicures and pedicures - Just a thought!

I do want to do hairdressing, but right now Im a shift manager at McDonalds :( Id love to be an air hostess or holiday rep but for the air hostess you need an A-C in maths and I got a D. It was never my strong point. I wouldnt mind working in a bar or even being a hotel cleaner abroad though just for the summer, Id do almost anything! They do have a McDonalds in Corfu Town I think butttt Im not keen on the job as it is lol

Melissa go for it while you can.  My daughter stayed in Arillas a couple of seasons ago and made loads of new friends so don't worry about going on your own.  Best thing she ever did and the memories will stay with her forever, think if she had had as much money as you to fall back on I would never have got her home.
Let us know how you get on and if you are staying with Spiro at Portofino it may be worth while asking him if he knows of anything.

The more I think about this I realise it's just down to how you sell yourself Melissa, if you work for McDonalds I would imagine you have food hygeine qualifications, first aid qualifications etc. Whilst these will be british based, I'm pretty sure they will be recognised by employers in lots of other countries, you could probably use this to find yourself a job in a bar, a restaurant or anywhere else that food and or drink is served or customer service is involved. It's just about having the confidence in your skills and abilities and saying "I can do that! Gissa Job!" (one for the older forum members)

Thanks for all of your advice I really appreciate it! Its kinda given me the confidence to do it reading what everyone's written, theres plenty of restaurants over there and I have done food safety and customer care courses so hopefully that'll count towards something! Thanks everyone :)

Don't worry about being alone in Arillas. You won't be. Read some of our holiday report to see the youngsters who arrive and people who stay. You will never be alone there. And unlike in Turkey, you won't be hassled by every dirty old man who sees you.

You won't need any Greek - yammas is actually equivalent to "Cheers" in UK. But they think I'm being quaint when I try out any more than that. justjen just said "she needs to keep a safety net of money so she can bail out" but it is unlikely you will ever call on it.

You are set fair for a really great experience there. You love the place like we do. What better than to make it real? And you have all of us and our contacts to fall back on. (Not that we can work miracles.)

I am full of admiration for you as a teacher of young people like you (until two weeks ago.)

Use all of the skills you have learned, and go with the instincts. Use the more practical information you get from people. Use it all. But like Graham said, don't live to regret never doing it.

best wishes
Phil
